    We have them in NY also. Woody comes daily several times a day. He knocks on the gutters looking for a peanut reward. Gorgeous birds!

      To anyone reading this previous post, yes, Red Bellied Woodpeckers LOVE peanuts. But, if you offer them peanuts, be sure they are roasted and unsalted.
      These woodpeckers also love peanut suet cakes.I love feeding my woodpeckers here in N.C.

    I had three of these little guys outside my house the other day. It was great to watch them and even better to listen to them. They and the pileated woodpeckers visit pretty often. The pileated ones like our bird bath for drinking, but I haven't seen the red-bellied ones use it.

    In Birmingham every morning they would sit in the gutters in my neighborhood and drum over and over! It echoed so loud!

    I have one here in NY state. It's December now. He stops by to eat peanuts. I've also had pine grosbeak, chickadees, nuthatches, downy woodpecker, dark eyed junco, pine sisken, goldfinch, hairy woodpecker, blue jay and cardinals, and a few different finches, all in Winter.

      That's it. The hammering on your roof while the little bastard makes holes in the shingles, busts your tv antenna and ruins your trees.

    • @entity49
      @entity49 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm very late to comment, but woodpeckers have no malicious intentions when they peck or drum at your house. If they peck multiple large holes then you might have an even worse problem: an insect infestation, or possibly termite or carpenter ant infestation.

  • @bambamnj

    No calling.. why do you have this in the title of this video. Sure the drumming is obvious, as far as I know every woodpecker does this and anyone who had ever lived in a rural area, probably knows what a woodpecker drumming sounds like, but you list CALLING in your title and no where in your video do I hear the two "syllable" call of this woodpecker. They actually make two distinct calls that I am aware of; the first is a Twilling sound, hard to describe but very similar (at least to me) to the sound that tree frogs make. The second sound is like a two or sometimes three syllable chirp. something like "chik-chik" or "chik-chik-chik".

    Is that bird planning to pay for it's damage?

  • @peterrabbit378
    @peterrabbit378 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    When they peck on your house like that it means you have termites. They peck to locate the termites which they eat.

    • @UpcomingJedi
      @UpcomingJedi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My tv antenna is made of aluminum. It doesn't have termites.

    • @Xponential911
      @Xponential911 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @J Fitz Not cancer but chlamydia. They went extinct in California from caving their beaks in due to excessive pecking.

      I live too far north (in Canada) for termites, yet there’s a pecker that’s been pecking at the house for weeks now.

    • @KHolzer444
      @KHolzer444 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually learned that drumming is a mating call and not just them looking for food. When hunting, they peck more forcefully and less frequently into wherever the food is, so it's quieter. It's sort of like how only unmated male mourning doves make the call mourning doves are known for, except all woodpeckers can drum. Not just males
