    Rob had a couple comments about this at the debut. First, we should never expect to hear this in a live performance. The preparation for it is very different from what is needed to perform their usual repertoire. Second, he played this for his father at Father's Day. His father cried, because opera has always been his preferred music genre to listen to, and he hadn't heard his son sing it for 15 years.

    Rob studied Opera in college, which is why he knows how to do the changes in his tonality and sound like an opera singer. Austin didn’t have the amount of opera training Rob did which is why his beautiful tenor voice sounds like Austin. It has been 15 years since Rob last sang opera and I think he did an amazing job, as did Austin.

    2 Opera singers both stated Rob would probly need 2 - 3 years to sing Pro Opera since he mainly needs to just lern Italian. Austin would need 3 - 5 years since he is trained as a Theater Singer and would need to Retrain his voice for Opera and also to learn Italian. BUT for WHAT they are and their attempt is just INSANE ! considering that they are mainly Country Singers. Both stated they WANT to get their Opera Conductors/Coaches to get with both Rob and Austin even if it is just to maybe so they can bring more people to Opera through them.

But from what I could tell they were very impressed with their efforts. But you could understand the English close words and the messed up google transulator version they were compairing them to Opera Singers and how far/close they were. Not all opera is in Italian. An enormous proportion is in German, and in the 20th century is in English, with a fair proportion in Russian. Are you honestly trying to tell me that your average singer needs to learn all that?? The snobbish attitude of American opera singers and their ignorance of what is actually going on outside their goldfish bowl is what has held American opera back. It helps to have a working knowledge of Italian , certainly not 3 years' worth, but to sing Wagner you need German. Good opera houses have staff to help you learn the notes and the libretto. Any singer who believes that you need fluent Italian is living in the 19th century and would probably not go far on the international stage.
      I disliked the attitude of both singer/reactors, finding it immensely patronising and disrespectful (another thing that will hold them back in whatever career they have). Austin has a beautiful lyric tenor voice and could easily find employment, as could Rob. As someone who I'd be prepared to bet has seen more opera than they have, certainly a wider range, they would be doing us all a favour if they kept their outdated views to themselves.
      Home Free is not really a country band, singing loads of other stuff, and if you think that Austin is "mainly a country singer" you ought to check out the enormous variety of genres on his channel.

      @@patriciamcl54 thank you. I also thought they were over critical. Arrogance is the male's first name. I have not been impressed with anything I have watched him sing. Quite emotionless while delivering. The other is still in college learning her trade. I would love to see both of them not sing opera for 15 years and then attempt a task like this. You have nailed the attitude prevalent in their reviews.

    It is hard for soloists in any genre to harmonize, move, or bring the same emotional intensity in unison. Rob and Austin's timing from having those things perfected from working together for years, bring that strength to this performance. Are they Pavarotti, no but who else rises to that level? Over all what they gifted us with this is bellissima! Just pick a genre.

  • @michelle32855
    @michelle32855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    That "roundness" is, I believe, called chiaroscuro, roughly translated as light/dark. It's almost a requirement for good opera singing.. His vowel shapes are critical for this. Austin is awesome with the chiaro but less so on the scuro :) If you watch their vowels, Rob's are much more rounded (vertical) and Austin's are more wide. Rob did study opera in college, but said he hadn't sung it in over 15 years. Sounds like he didn't forget much! You're right, Austin sounds like Austin, like a "pop" singer singing opera. Not that he didn't do a great job, but the technique is so very different.

    • @davelister2
      @davelister2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Elizabeth (The Charismatic Voice) said in her analysis of ring of fire that Tim has chiaroscuro, hopefully we can get this in front of her as well, as she’s done Pavarotti’s performance.

    @lkayh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Gotta love it-reading the comments, I KNOW that people watched Peter’s analysis and learned things. I sure did. 😁. Chiaroscuro-how often do you see that one in comments?? LOL.
    At the end of the day, though, even if this isn’t professional level opera, it’s lovely. If they veer this far out of their lane again, I’m there for it! If Rob ever decided to put out singles singing like this as a side gig, I’d buy all of them. I just love his tone. And Austin-that smile while he sings just makes me happy. I’ve always thought he had a gorgeous voice.
    You may not have had a ton of comments/analysis, but it was a lot of fun to see your face when they sang. ❤

  • @venus5019

    Robb DID study opera 4-5 years. Austin as part of his music program also studied too not as intense as Robb. One hears it immediately with Robb's rich operatic voice. Portions of the song itself has been used in commercials, cartoons & movies.
    Years ago my roommates upon encouragement of one roommate, all bought season tickets for the opera. One roommate used to live in Germany & went to the opera house constantly. She was a trained voice teacher in Europe. It was an experience. I saw some of the most famous/popular operas. We all saw Pavarotti perform this in an opera at the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC. In that same year, we also saw Plácido Domingo.
    It's not being a comparison but rather stating actually saw the singer who made this famous. Pavarotti sang this w/o microphones & emoted so energetically we were exhausted by the end. I believe they are very good singers. I think Robb could have gone into opera. Unfortunately, just as Home free, it's a very hard rope to climb to get recognition & work in the upper spheres of opera. I don't know if a comparison should be done. I think did well from their take on it.

    Nessun dorma (ness, rhymes with mess; oon, rhymes with moon; dor, like door; ma, rhymes with paw) is from Puccini's opera Turandot. It means "no one sleeps" (sung in Italian). Rob has had classical (opera) training, but hasn't sung opera in many years. Rob is very talented!! I am so happy Austin convinced Rob to do this because it makes opera more "approachable" to people who think they don't like opera. It brings opera out of the rafters and down to where us normal folk dwell and gives people an opportunity to hear the wonderful music opera has to offer. And, no, opera isn't my one and only music genre (it isn't my favorite, either), but there is some absolutely stunning music associated with opera that I think many people would really love if they had the opportunity to hear it. If you let the language be a barrier, try Gilbert and Sullivan's operas. They're written in English and they have some wonderful music!!

    • @leslieholland7843

      Well written, and a great idea. Maybe send Mortius, under separate cover, a few fun Gilbert & Sullivan operas he could warm up to...like the Pirates of Penzance? There was that cringeworthy movie with Kristy McNichol, and Christopher Atkins, (dating myself here, child of the 80s) but I loved the Pirate King and thought the Modern Major General song was a hoot! That would win over some folks, but that was the entire depth of my G&S knowledge. Rock on!

    Great Reaction! I have never been a fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.

    This is insane. It is extremely good. Fantastic. Both are doing great. But Rob, I'm perplexed!!! His voice is just magical, so rich, so warm and powerful.Chills just ran through my body. It flows into my heart. For me he will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers. It's not often that I listen to songs by opera singers 5 times and more in a row. But here it is. Of course I hope that both will always continue to do Home Free, but I wouldn't think it wrong that such "trips" are made more often. Opera, country, ballads, soul etc. I think anything is possible.
    Even if you don't like opera, you have to like it. Maybe because it's so amazingly good, but not 100% perfect.

    Peter Barber, bass operatic singer, does a very good breakdown of this. But whilst pointing out where it falls short of a true operatic rendition is still very complimentary about it. They did a wonderful job and I love it. Apparently the depth of voice is achieved by dropping the larynx, which takes training, and which is why Austin's voice sounds "lighter" in tone.

    Italian "Nessun Dorma" in English: "Let no one sleep" is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot and one of the best known tenor arias in all of opera. That is a B4 they sing at the end as in the Original Key as written by Puccinni and made famous by Pavarotti...

    Okay, so this is from Puccini's 1924 opera "Turandot." Turandot, a Chinese princess who hates men and doesn't want to marry, makes all potential suitors answer 3 riddles -- if they get them wrong, she has them executed. The one to get them correct gets her as his bride. To her horror, Prince Calaf answers her riddles correctly, and she begs her dad the emperor not to make her marry him, but he's like, "Sorry, honey, a deal is a deal." Calaf tells her that if she can learn his name by morning, he will release her from her agreement. "Nessus Dorma" means "No one sleeps", because Calaf knows she's going around asking everyone she can if they know his name, and he knows they don't. And he's basically gloating about his morning victory. "Vincero!" -- "I will win!" Turandot ends up falling in love with Calaf and tells her father, "I have learned his name, and it is Love." It's really like a bad romcom.

Most of us Home Fries (ummm...full disclosure...I'm actually a Pentafry) have already researched all that to death. But you explained the difference in voice production, and that's the key to understanding the significance of this performance. Austin was fabulous--as always--but as you say, "he still sounds like Austin." I don't think I can ever look at Rob the same way again. He is amazing. Of course, he had opera training ....but that was a long time ago. You are right; Austin's voice is still uniquely him.....only on steroids.😄 I don't know much about opera either, but I always liked this song.

    This might sound odd, but while sitting in a shelter, waiting for Ian to come, one of my thoughts was "But Mortius is going to upload his reaction to Nessun Dorma on Wednesday!" Okay, it was a way of trying to keep from freaking out. But we just got our electricity today, and, after getting some news and reaching out to friends, this reaction was the first thing I did. Thank you!

      I hope Ian left you relatively unharmed, if a bit damp. I'm in Durham, NC, in a 55+ age building, and I learned that our evacuation stairs get puddles on them...I didn't trust the elevator (4 story building, but I'm only 57 so I was fine...but what if my 98 year old neighbor on the 3rd floor had needed to evacuate? Cheap landlords make me so mad! Be blessed, Internet Stranger. Glad Mortius lifted your spirits, as he often does mine!!

    The word "cover" isn't usually used to describe a performer's version of an opera, probably because there isn't much room for innovation or improvisation.

    Nessun Dorma is an aria from Puccini's opera Turandot. I've listened to various opera professionals sing this 'cos it's my favourite and they do a better rendition than a lot of them. It was most famously & most beautifully sung by the incomparable (late) Luciano Pavarotti.

      P.S. - I recently came across an old Home Free video that features Rob - again singing in a way you're not accustomed to "Joy to the World (Live)". It's unusual to say the least!
