Many years ago like about twenty years ago I would go to Lake Murray and catch over 100 bass in just half a day........there were many Lunkers also found in and around the mats of Hydrilla.
I have watched the lake become overun with people.......extreme fishing pressure, boating, etc, etc.
Now even if you are good........some days even with years of experience on the lake it is tuff to catch a five fish limit........Tournament results the past few springs have been dismal in what they used to be.........once in a small local tournament when the 7 fish limit was in effect I presented 64.56 pounds to the weigh in.....and still came in fourth place. I had two fish over 10 pounds that day........slow rolling a huge thumper spinnerbait................
Now the fishing is a real challenge........most of the time.
And I see hundreds of boats on the lake on weekdays........it was once only the weekends you saw such crowds but now even if you get to a public ramp at 6 a.m. you may not even find a place to park on a weekday.........this over crowding has become reality.
And I see these boats sight fishing the Bass Beds......yanking fish off the nest.....tossing them in the livewell.......bouncing and bashing them for 7 hours around the lake.......and when released at least 50 percent of them die and all those beds are gone as the small fish simply raid the nest and eat the eggs........and over and over this happens.
Unpopular as it may be........it is time to restrict Bass fishing during the spawn. And it will eventually happen simply out of defense of the fishery as has happened to many other lakes.........
Yep time to stop bed fishing during the spawn. Just too many boats making the rounds.
Not too many years ago you could pull into a clear water cove and see a Bass bed about every ten to 20 feet.........not so anymore. You will find maybe two or three beds in a cove and those beds may be deeper......in around 7 or 8 feet of water.........and so it goes......bit by bit by bit the fishery is in decline.
The days of running a large deep diving Crankbait(Bill Norman works well) and catching several fish 8 pounds or better are gone.........unless lady luck smiles upon you and you catch one......normally you will not......not anymore.
Time to protect the fishery..........it is in decline simply due to fishing the beds and the crowds......and perhaps a camera and a fish ruler should replace the hauling and bashing of the fish to the weigh in........but this would mess with corporate profits.......eh??
    Cheers!

Kit Carson I grew up on Murray and even the pan fishing had declined in the 90's it was a good fishery for bass & pan fish but today it's hit or miss, we also need limits on bream & shellcraker they put a 5 fish limit about 10 years ago in Minnesota and huge bluegill have made a come back vv

Overfishing, technology and habitat change. Never fished Murray but its all the same everywhere.

Totally agree. It’s happening on lakes everywhere. Time to bring about changing the attitudes of bass fishermen everywhere.

I agree. Tournament fishing combined with amateur anglers fishing from the bank and boats, lead to a fish population decline. It’s not rocket science. And I know most catch and release but research shows that most bass that are released, die soon after they swim off.
