my mom read Hannibal not long after it came out, back when the only film was the silence of the lambs, and she liked the first two novels but absolutely hated Hannibal. I remember it to this day because it made her so angry, she didn't even watch the movies that came out because she felt like they had ruined Hannibal as a character lol
So I've never read the books, but that's my experience with that lol

I agree with you 100% about Hannibal. It was actually a let down for me. I didn’t enjoy it. Maybe because I saw the movie first or because I’m comparing it to the previous books in the series….or maybe a bit of both….. not sure. Anyway, great insight, great vid, keep up the great work.

About "Hannibal"? It was said that Harris became a fan of his own creation after the success of "Silence..." and that was the great failure of that book. And with "Hannibal Rising" it's said that Harris didn't want to do another Lecter book, but that they were going to making the movie and tell the story of Lecter's origin, and Harris wrote the book so that his version was the definitive version and they made that into the movie.

Great video. I would add The Ritual by Adam Nevill. The novel is good but the film is amazing

Great video, would love to see this the other way around! What books are better than the movie? I’m a big horror movie fan and am trying to get back into reading and have been discovering more and more that a lot of horror movies were originally books and I want to know which books are worth a read

I would argue that the book version of The Exorcist is even better than the amazing film. it really scared me as a horror veteran even though I don't find ghosts or demons particularly scary. if you like audio books I would recommend to listen to the narration by William Peter Blatty himself. it is chilling to the bone, you just have to be a bit more patient because it is a book and it takes more time setting up the story.
there is a movie called "the girl next door" and it is a fair adaptation of Jack ketchum's novel but in my opinion the story works better as a book. it is absolutely upsetting and you will undoubtedly feel like shit after reading it. the movie was a bit more campy and I managed to not take it so seriously but with the book that was impossible.

I liked the film version of Christine better than Stephen King's novel which surprised me because I love his books. It's probably because I saw the movie first and loved it when I was younger.

Also would love to add Annihilation!! It’s technically more sci-fi horror but the movie is just such great cosmic horror and the book is kind of just… there.

Oh really? I was planning to read the book before I saw the movie.

@@AndaKent yeah, honestly the movie is just so stunning that the book pales in comparison.

I would add JAWS. The film is far better than the book, in so many ways.

you are so on point on these reviews. You did a video about the October Country and I found a copy in my Good Will and now it sits on top of my shelf Awesome ! the mix of Halloween type scares and little sci fi is such a great combo

I personally enjoy the The Shining movie more than I do King's novel. However I do think that the character work in the novel is leagues better than the film.

Perfect Blue was a book before it became a movie. Satoshi Kon didn't even read the book and went with his own vision, and thank goodness for that!
The movie's surrealist approach delves deep into psychological horror as we watch Mima's breakdown as she rises to stardom. It makes you question what is real and what is in her head. It keeps you on edge and questioning what's really going on, especially on your first time viewing. And even on your second and third you can successfully pick out the hidden clues, that were not so obvious, staring at you in the face.
The book was very straightforward and plays off more as an over the top 80s slasher horror. Mima is also very... optimistic main character throughout the book. It's probably me but I found it a bit annoying. She has no to very few problems to overcome as she rises in fame. She just felt very...flat compared to the movie version

I used to think about these kind of stuff, but now I can't remember many instances. All I know is for me the film "Let the right one in" (2008) was better than the novel. I probably think so because I watched the film first and then nothing could top it for me.

I loved the movie Stir of Echoes but I haven't read the book. I did watch I Am Legend and loved it and I read the book after. I don't understand why the book is held up as a literary masterpiece. It's awful and the story is dumb and pointless. It's the only Matheson book I've read, so I might give his other stories a go, but I'm so disappointed in Matheson, it pains me.

for me a big one is The Ritual by Adam Nevill - the film blew me away so much that i had to read the original, and wow there were some creative divergences there... i think i like Audition the book more than the film, i like that we don't know much more beyond the main guy being a dirtbag who may or may not be about to get his grisly comeuppance =]

"Jaws" the book is TOTALLY different then the movie. Totally. If you've seen the movie and then read the book you'll be disappointed.

I enjoyed the book. To film it as the book wouldn't have worked because the sub plots involving extra marital affairs and the mafia wouldn't fly. I however like the books ending but I know that makes me a rarity. Love the movie too btw.

The book to IKWYDLS mustn't be that good if the movies better than it. Although I regard the movie as a classic its not the best slasher

It's not at all a horror book. It's more of a sad story than anything. Not what I expected.

The Haunting book is also not nearly as good good as the movie or it's remake movie... Though I did thoroughly enjoy the book and both movies.... All three of us checking out.

I would add Doctor Sleep to this list. *Spoiler Alert* Making Dan and Abra related was forced and unnecessary. I also feel like it really lessened the character of Jack Torrance. I always felt he was such a tragic figure - he really did try to stay sober and take care of his family. But to have him cheat on his wife really made me sympathize with him a lot less. The movie fixes this.

Agreed 💯. In the book they expanded on the True Knot and that was definitely lacking in the movie.
