    Curse your guys aversion to the metric system!! 😂
    57 inches, so... about 145 cm, for those who follow the *other* way of measuring distance. Cool tip. Thanks! 👍😉

      @Nick_Lewis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      haha you are right! I will start adding the metric in as well. It's funny - being Canadian we do metric for some things and follow the Americans for others. Weather we do celsius but baking we do fahrenheit. Driving we do kilometres an hour, but for all things interior design we do square feet and inches! We tried to change, but we still adapt to the Americans sometimes!

    Making a kraft paper template of the art you want to hang is very useful. Roll out the paper, put a corner of the artwork at a corner of the paper, trace the other two edges and cut out a piece of paper the exact size as the art. Fold the paper into quarters and punch out the folded corner where the center of the picture will be. The vertical fold of the paper will give you the horizontal center of the picture. Mark the paper where the picture hook(s) will sit. Use painters tape to position the template on the wall. The hole in the center of the template makes it easy to position the height of the center of the picture. Decide if you like the placement (I often give it a day.) Place the hook where the picture wire will sit on the mark you’ve made on the template. Lightly tap the hook nail to make a pilot hole. Remove template, seat home the picture hook, and hang the artwork.

    Great, so practical! I learned this in college, working in the art gallery. It is a women’s college, so we hung art pieces a tad lower, for the average woman’s eye level 👧🏽

    Very helpful. Thank you! I just moved into a new apartment in a converted hospital -- and the ceilings are very high so I was completely stumped about how to hang art on these walls. The tip about making a template for a gallery wall was also very helpful and much appreciated.

    This is a great reference vid, Nick. Have you done a 2-min. on how to work out placement for a stairway gallery? My hubby is an amateur wildlife photographer and just keeps adding but it's throwing off my design aesthetic! Help! ☺

    Can you talk about WHY you hang the art at that height? My partner hangs all our art like 2 inches from the ceiling and thinks it looks great and it DRIVES ME NUTS! 😋 (He’s not even that tall! 🤦‍♀️)

    Hello Nick - Could you do a video on how high to hang a Samsung The Frame TV over a console. The TV serves as wall art when not being used as a TV. We a looking into buying one and want to make sure we hang it at the right height over our console.

    I'm in a dormer with a low ceiling even at the maximum height in the middle (ie I can flatten a palm on the ceiling without my heels leaving the floor). Usually I've been told to use low furniture to create the illusion of more height. Where do I put wall art, or will this break the illusion? I tried doing large frames leaning against the knee wall, but it just looks like I haven't finished moving in. Should I center art to eye level when seated? Is there a scale for the maximum size my art should be? Or a minimum distance from floor?

    I just got done helping my mother move. The last day was hanging art. I started with everything at my eye height so I didn’t have to look up to view it. My mom and husband wanted everything about 6 inches higher. I guess I’m too short. 😂

    Great video! Thank you very much. What about measuring something metal like aluminum with holes in the corners you’re going to mount with long heavy screws, rather than a hanging wire in back liked you’d find in a framed photo or painting? (This is for a screened patio.)

    What about the height of pictures in a sitting room versus the height in an entry hall. Does the old rule of hanging pictures in a dining room at eye level when seated still hold? This is my big question! Thanks for your great videos.

    • @mitchjohnson4714
      @mitchjohnson4714 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, and it brings up an important issue: if you put all decorations to be enjoyed from sitting height the room would look really weird, so I think the philosophy that it's all about eye level viewing is an imperfect philosophy. I think one really has to account for the geometry of the room as well

    Hi Nick! I only disvcovered your channel a couple of days ago and have been binge watching the last two days. :-) I do have a question that may be an idea for a video. I plan to do a gallery wall over my bed. But I don't have collected enough art work yet or respectively want to let it grow over time. All the videos I saw about gallery walls are about finished ones. Perhaps you could give some tips on how to start with an empty wall and a few art pieces, so that the whole thing can develop and still looks nice during the process.

    Hi Nick, just found you. Love seeing Canadians making it on TH-cam. Question about the hanging of art - is there a guide for how far to hang pieces? I have four 17x13 frames and I am stumped by how much space I should leave between them. Is 3" too much? 1" is definitely making them look cramped!

    No. 57 inches is way too low. That can't be right. Then you say it's "eye level". 57 inches is 4ft 7inch, whose eye level is 4ft 7 inches?? Most people are taller than that!
