I recently completed a tricycle resto for my mother-in-law. It was her tricycle when she was a child. She just turned 86. I now have another one to do for my best buddy's wife.(it was hers also as a child-she doesn't know about it yet) A much newer tricycle but will be just as satisfying to bring the memories back for her. Great work.

Very nice! I just started one myself for my Granddaughter. I’m having heck finding front fork hub bearings. All newer ones are 1 1/8”-1 3/8” O.D. Mine is only 3/4” O.D.

I have the exact same tricycle that was mine in the 50s and we are planning to refresh and restore it. Luckily mine is in much better shape than yours to start with especially the seat. My 4 year old granddaughter was riding it today and loved it!
As a tricycle and riding toy collector myself, I think you did a fantastic job on this tricycle restoration. Particularly I was interested to see your seat recovering job, which looks very professional IMO. That's an area of restoration I want to develop skills in - sewing vinyl and leather seat covers. You are correct - it is a Murray Ohio tricycle badged for the Sears Happi Time store brand. These older trikes are well worth fixing up because they were built to last with just a little care the same as the bicycles that were made by the same manufacturers back then. Thank you for sharing the transformation steps in your video. I'm recently retired and have several trikes to work on from the 1950s to around 1930. Videos like yours encourage me to start fixing some of mine up.
Matt Erwin...This is very impressive. You should definitely do more restorations of various things. With today's cheap stuff coming from overseas, it's worth bringing the old stuff back to life; not to mention the fun you have.
If u turn middle bar upside down it will become a chopper. I did that to radio flyer tricycle. Going to put a bannana seat made in Italy. On it and put a different stem on it .hopefully that stem idea works so can almost and kind of handle bars on it. Going to put a head light on it to want to tIl light on it to.
Angelo, Im lucky enough to have a sand blaster where I work and thats how I removed the rust. I would imagine if you went to a local Body Shop and pay them a buck or two, they would let you use their sandblaster. Thanks for your reply and good luck with your project.
I got a old school type trike for free that fits kids from tiny toddlers to 6 year olds for free, I sanded/scraped/filed off all the old rust and paint then spray painted it the primary colours for a family friends newborn, she loves it and her son will be able to ride it soon

Nice video man! Great work! I'm working on a similar trike currently, ive hit a road block though, I cant figure out how to take the handle bars off. Do you remember how that worked? Once I take the screw that looks like its holding them on out they should just slide up right? They are rusted super bad. Thanks for your help!

The front tire came from a garden cart with the 5 spoke plastic wheel.I had to adjust the inner profile of the tire to fit the trike wheel. I believe the way the tires are measured is the rim o.d. x tire width (1.75" or so). To install them I boiled them in water for about one minute. More time may be required. I had a pair of heavy leather gloves ready and then man handled them onto the rim. I only had one casualty ( the tire broke in half ) and had to order another. Good luck
I recently found an old Angeles Tricycle to restore. The large solid hard rubber wheel in front has shrunk and allowed for a gap or separation in the rubber. Do you know of any way I can essentially "sew" up the gap (.100+) and use some some type of filler to complete the process?
My father in law has recently found an AMF Vintage trike just like this one and is trying to restore it, but we can’t find wheel replacements anywhere for the front wheel! It is 9.5”. Do you have any suggestions on where we should start to find a wheel?

Hi Amber. I would recommend making friends with someone who owns a sand blaster. I couldn't imagine doing this project without one. Also, If your going to paint the trike with spray paint, stay away from rustoleum brand. I would probably go with krylon next time.The rustoleum in mid spray would shoot out a very dry, un even glob almost every can I used. Regarding tires... If the old tires still have numbers on the sides (10 x 1.50 x etc...), just throw that number into ebay and you should have many to choose from. And lastly, when installing the tires, I would boil them in water for a couple of minutes and then with thick leather gloves, man handle them onto the rims. Swearing is allowed during this process. I already checked :) Good luck and have fun.....
I want to restore my brothers and mines trycyle from when we were kids will be for our neice but how did you remove the rust? Ours has the same amount of rust just don't know what company made it, first time doing this haven't done it yet but plan to.
Angelo Garcia you have to manually sand it no chemical would remove the dust you just have to where a mask to not breath any dust its pretty easy it just takes time washing it first lossens some off
I have an old Gambles Hiawatha made by Murray. Where did you order your parts from? Also the rear wheels on mine are completely unusable since the axle hole bushings are so worn out. I have not found a source for these types of wheels and tire.I have seen a couple videos but I haven't seen any on how to remove and replace the "tires". I was just barely able to make out the Gambles logo. I was hoping to find a clear photo on line but haven't found one. I was thinking of giving a photo to a decal manufacturer or graphics company to remake the logo for me.
Bobby, The only parts that I ordered for this trike was the tires which I bought on ebay. The way I installed the tires was to boil them for about two minutes and then with thick welding gloves I manhandled them onto the rims. Good luck with your build. Sounds fun..
Good question. I really didn't think about making a video of the restoration until I was nearly finished. All I had up to that point were still photos so in the video at 2:35, there is a still of one of the wheels in the sand blaster. A few seconds later, theres is another still of all the parts in a cardboard box after being sand blasted. After that, I used auto body pin hole filler and sand paper to smooth out the pits left behind by the rust. And once again, a very long answer to a simple question... I hope that helps

Boil the tire for about a minute or until pliable and then manhandle them onto the rim. You'll need thick gloves to handle them by the way. Good luck!
