@@Carycares1817 yes the geese are very protective of their young, they’re sitting on a clutch of eggs so they’re extra testy. I will do a video on it soon, but a quick answer is they are guard geese and protect the ducks from predators.
Chad - I have seen a couple people use Geese to protect the chickens from predators. If you add a baby gosling into the flock it will grow up around the chicks and consider it part of their flock but the goose will watch out for their chicks! It works so far as I have seen ❤️🐼💜
That’s the plan, I haven’t lost a duck to predators since using guard geese and I’m sure the same can be done with the chickens. I hope I timed it just right, but you’ll see it in the next video or two. 😊
We had always had black and white cats until Jade. Jade was a grey with jade green eyes. She was the most loveable cat I've ever had. She qaa a stray given to us. She would literally lay up under your neck and sleep and purr and purr. We had her 16 years. She passed this week. Best cat ever.
A cheap alternative to pine shavings for chicks is to get a paper shredder and shred recycled newspaper. The park near our house has a huge paper recycling bin we can take from.
I actually have lots of shredded paper but its printer paper, do u think thats fine too? I was gonna just use it in the compost. Thanks for the tip though.
@@HiddenSpringFarm we have used all types of paper (regular notebook paper to scrapbook paper scraps) the only ones that seem to work well is the “shiny” type sales paper. It isn’t does not absorb properly. One test I do is drop a few drops of water on it if it soaks in instead of just sitting on top it will work.
If you have some treats in your pocket every time, chewie might come running. If you care to, he can be trained to a collar but it takes some perseverance.
If you put in a pond make sure there is a ledge to grow aquatic plants. In order to grow plants in my pond I would have to hang containers in the water which is ridiculous. Most plants want 6-18 inches of water. The plants help the pond ecosystem/fish/geese and attract wild ducks and geese. An aerator is good to run in the non frozen season, they cost 1500. No need to buy wood shavings, mulch or chips if you have trees on your property get a chipper.
Haha I do have a wood chipper but just haven’t had much time. If I do a pond I’ll be doing it right, I’m sure it’ll need a liner. Thing is I want a big pond with fish, plant etc…big enough that I can use a small boat anyway. That’s down the road though. 🎣
I love my barred rock girls. I have 1 in particular that is trained with 2 taps on the outside roost to hop up and get her special treats. I raise mill worms for all of them, but she thinks it's only for her. The others have caught on so when I go in the run, they all coo at me like she does to try to confuse me but they've not learned the roost part lol! Chickens are smart and very funny to watch

You’re so right. This video was filmed last week and this week they are already double the size and I’ve had to upgrade them to a bigger feeder and waterer. I’m filming this morning and part of it will be the new goose hatch (6 out of 7 hatched).

Feeding your dogs and cats with home raised chickens is 👌. I have approx 60 cats and kittens (most abandoned), the have a big room inside the house with is connected to an outside cat run. So, for next year I have planned to raise meat chickens as extra food for the cats. Only eating dry and wet canned cat food can't be healthy, right. The cats are gonna be like 😸😺😽😸😺😽😸😺😽

I dunno maybe in some cases, but all of those chicks survived and did very well. Frey’s hatchery is right here in Ontario and it all gets shipped and picked up by customers within the same day.
