You nailed the reason George RR Martin risked everything to write that post. I think Ryan Condal & Sara Hess are very impressive, they fell faster than Dan & Dave, everything going off rail after season 1. When people say bring back D&D they don't seem as crazy even though they still are.
I think that Sunfyre is THE toxic butterfly. It completely changes the ending of the dance and Rhaenyra's death (which is one of the most iconic and anticipated moments of the series being adapted). However, I do think that this was the direction they wanted to take the show. It isn't about Aegon/Rhaenyra, its about Alicent/Rhaenyra, they are making Rhaenicent canon, they have bent over backwards to absolve female characters of violence and have the end goal be escaping patriarchal westeros to live in the east. I could easily see them changing Rhaenyra's "death" to be another secret escape to essos and Aegon "makes up" her being eaten by sunfyre, or another dragon, or that just starts as a rumor.
Nah… it’s Nettles… And there being Morning and Sheepstealer imo… i don’t mean to say i know for sure the toxic butterfly… To your point though you may as well make Aegon the Conqueror a female if you’re gonna change stuff like major character’s deaths that much. An anticipated death at that. Lol… gonna get crowded with Laenor, Rhaenyra, Damon, Rhaena, little Viserys all hiding in Essos…
I swear, I will freak out if they undo Rhae's death in the series but I have this sickening feeling that you could be right. Part of what I liked about the book charcters was their vitriol, and it's very upsetting that they're white washing Rhae & Alicent. I love evil stepmom Alicent, but I think they could do longing lesbian Alicent just as well if they didn't white wash.
At first I thought they wanted us to think it was dead so when we see Sunfyre again it’s a nice surprise. But now I’m not so sure. Considering all the other pointless changes that have been made so some writers can feel ownership of the project instead of just telling the story how it’s meant to be told.
Giving all this screen time to Rheana sulking, or abandoning the kids she is suppose to be protecting, or wandering around in the hills, when they could have used that time to set up and show Nettles. I really hope s3 starts with SheepStealer eating Rheana and Nettles walking out of a cave and hoping in its back to go to the riverlands and eventually meet Daemon.
All the major changes they have made so far have been unforced errors, like you said. Laenor not dying never mattered or paid off, so ultimately saving him was contrived and pointless. Not including Aegon's youngest kid changed blood and cheese and future events for little reason. Removing Nettles is removing a fan favorite for literally no reason, just pissing off your core audience. I like when they add details and motivations beyond what was in the text, the writers often do a good job at this. However whenever they change major plot points or remove characters it never ends well.
I mean they literally made Joffrey spoil rhaenyra's fate in game of thrones (while it was still good) so if they want any continuity at all they kinda have to at least make that fit right.. that would be beyond stupid to change something so significant that your other show already confirmed/backed up.
Technically all Joffrey said “Rhaenyra Targaryen was murdered by her brother-or rather, his dragon. It ate her while her son watched.” This leaves open multiple possibilities, since neither the brother nor dragon in question get named. Aegon could claim a new dragon and kill Rhaenyra with that one. Or they could have Aemond or Daeron be the one who kills Rhaenyra

There is one way I can see Sunfyre being dead working, though granted at this point it may be giving the show too much credit because clearly they dont actually care about a change working in the long-run. But if Aegon bonds with Grey Ghost on Dragonstone, instead of Sunfyre killing Grey Ghost, it would overall be a pretty low-impact change while setting up the possibility of a dragon rider bonding with a second dragon after their first dragon dies. That would do two things for the show: 1st, it would definitively show that Viserys _chose_ not to take a second dragon _because he didnt want to_ , which would be thematically important; 2nd, it would set up the possibility for them to kill off Sheepstealer and have Nettles-Rhaena later have Morning. Hey boss. I had a dream after watching a bunch of your videos and I think it might actually have some interesting connections in it. Basically the idea my sleepy brain had is that the Children live underground in subterranean caves, rivers, and weirwood root systems- and part of the reason weirwoods are corrupted, upset, and in pain is that their 'worshippers' have come to them with stories (songs) of conflict, war, and death, and it makes the weirwoods sad and angry. The Children continue to do this because they live in a state of exile and oppression in their own continent and have been using the weirwood system as a weapon against mankind instead of the peaceful ceremonial role they were meant to play. And the way it'll eventually be reconciled and the weirwood system cleansed and healed, is that children and men will have to come together somehow and sing songs to the trees that make the trees happy again. It sounds extremely hippy dippy, but songs are such an important aspect of this universe that the entire series is named after them, and several characters entire stories, i.e. Littlefinger (Bael-ish) Mance, and Sansa are based on retellings of classic songs. Children of the forest in human disguise like the Ghost of High Heart like to have songs sung to them. Once the old ways are abolished, the rituals of blood sacrifice stopped, the Others returned to the trees, and the trees pacified and comforted with song, nature and society can start to heal.
The phrase "long in the dying" appears early on in the first book, A Game of Thrones. It's said in reference to Bran while he lies in a coma. Eustace appears (I had to look it up, I'm awful with names) but I feel like the writers are going for a "the history we know is actually a lie" ending with Rhaenyra and Alicent getting a bittersweet ending together after faking their deaths. I didn't want to get on the Anti-Hess bandwagon...but I've seen some pretty great evidence that she is...a lot of what people say she is. I think the thing that makes me the most annoyed is that she gives the trolls fuel. She lives up to the ridiculous caricature they claim her to be. It took both Dave and Dan and many seasons to get what she can do in two.
I feel that Aegons declaration of Sunfyre being dead is very in character for him. While Sunfyre may still be alive and maybe even recovering (as Aegon is), the dragon is now useless to him. Aegon will not be able to fly into battle with Sunfyre so what use is he. May as well be dead .. Y’know? Ofc we know Aegon will make use of Sunfyre eventually but at this moment he’s still stuck (as you mentioned) in this ‘poor me - no cock and no dragon’ mode.

n do usa not have that phrase?
that's not what happens in the books aegon feeds her to sunfire
Its flame bladder exploded so it's most likely dead
Suppose could argue he so riddled with pain and is he not all in with the poppy too? So if we give leeway maybe the dragon link broken due to that so thinks it dead
I've hung to hope with such excuses for D&D, I'm not doing it again for R&H, my pitchfork is ready.
If he is, what a disappointment
Hope they don't kill sunny
I'm a spoiler!
"90% chance Sunfyre is alive" lmao book fan brains are so incredibly cooked
Obviously alive but nobody cares season 2 sucked
The show is boring af
I feel that Aegons declaration of Sunfyre being dead is very in character for him.
While Sunfyre may still be alive and maybe even recovering (as Aegon is), the dragon is now useless to him. Aegon will not be able to fly into battle with Sunfyre so what use is he. May as well be dead ..
Y’know?
Ofc we know Aegon will make use of Sunfyre eventually but at this moment he’s still stuck (as you mentioned) in this ‘poor me - no cock and no dragon’ mode.
I mean no matter what. GoT already discussed Sunfyre through Joffrey explaining that sunfyre had eaten Rhaenyra. SHowrunner sof HoTD Can't really change her fate
He’s not dead. Pointless video
Honestly I side less and less with George as time goes by, if he had a regular day to day job I think he would be an insufferable coworker getting little to nothing done always distracted… but seriously he signed off on these shows being made, if he can’t trust show makers with his story don’t do it. The whole IP took a huge hit with the last season because he gave someone else creative control over his story. I don’t feel bad if he is making the same mistake with making two new tv shows based on the first half of Targaryen rule and three short stories. Finish something George
7:17 You are so sweet to make sure people know what kind of spoilers you are giving 🫶🏻
naw he is not Joffrey said so in the future
