Making a Fishing Rod from a Busted Rod: THE FRANKENROD 2!

  • He has done it before and will doubtless do it again...take 2 sections of broken fishing rod that most would have thrown into the dumpster and turn them into a perfectly usable fishing rod which he calls the "FRANKENROD 2". Don't laugh as the Franken 1 rod has already had some good fish caught on it. Also filmed is a mysterious bright orange fungus that needs identifying. Would you know what the jelly like creation is? Watch the film to check it out.

    SMITH (Hand raised) Smith here Mr Pullen, Sir. I think the yellow fungus thing you found is Mrs Pullen's bath sponge that she threw at you for testing your lures in her bath - whilst she was in it. And you probably will survive, though not if you cook up whitebait with sweet chilli crisps ever again. PS As it's Friday, Ma cooks fish for dinner tonight. Not the usual battered Pollack from Iceland (the store not the country - I can't cast that far, but poached seatrout - all thanks to your tips!

      Poached seatrout sounds good..just have to catch me one...Also had fish for tea tonight..some battered and brutelised piece of white flesh that was virtually tasteless..but Friday is fish night so have to run with it or I might get trouble....Fence mending round the old corral tomorrow..be glad when the weather gets sorted.

    Ahh the Enjoyment Of The Franken Rod Build , Nothing like it ,I actually Had A Series of Reels That I Used and Liked that I would only buy Those rarely did one have a misissue but if so I had spare Parts after a couple years of using them, I still have A Couple Of Those Now That I've Managed To Save From My Two Sons, Thankfully They're Both Thru The Teen Years and Float Trips That always Seem to result in a mishap somehow 🤦🏻‍♂️🤪🤷🏻‍♂️🤔, LoL 😂 , But I Remember Those Days As Well So ,, these were inexpensive really , had a great drag system and For the size of the Reel I put some big fish in the net but I could spool them with a 8 to 10 pound Braid use a 3 ft mono leader of a 4 lb tied into a high low rig and fish Crappie Jigs Of Course I change Rods But Those little cheap shakespeare Reels did well for a ultralight ,Ya don't find many that you can get a dual role With often , I would spool 30 pound Braid and catch red drum and Specks,Flounder Black Drum a few trips , change out the spool to the 8 pound put it on a Light Weight Rod and catch Crappie , The Rods I'm the same never throw anything Away , most I buy I usually end up adding a Guide or two , I Had A Lew's Speed Stik That Had been rebuilt more times than Dale Earnhardt's engine lol 🤣🤣🤣 , 🤷🏻‍♂️ , Anyway Enjoyed The Show , Hopefully This Blasted China Virus Will Disappear , Till Then ,Do what ya Must Gram , From Mississippi we Bid You A Great Thanks For The Entertainment , ,

    I love the use of the gas cooker knob for the butt cap Graeme. When you're out catching (I nearly said cooking then) fish with Wayne, you can say to him "We're cooking on gas now Wayne" Haha. By the way, that Gorilla glue is brilliant stuff and is widely used by rod restourers and builders now. It's especially good for using on old delaminated cane rods because when you wet the cane the glue froths up and fills the gaps then you just wipe off any excess.

  • @TruckerMurdock
    @TruckerMurdock 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome build. Can you do a pink one for Sharon? Regarding Gorilla glue I often use it to reinforce knots for wreck fishing. A very fine coating on the knot and never had a slip or break yet. Also if you hang a flapper rig horizontal whilst building and the snood swivels are facing down you can can put some Gorilla glue on in a taper shape and your snoods will naturally stand off way more giving far less tangles if you cast hard. It was just a "Pullen experiment" when I was bored but it works. Graeme I would love to see you use Gorilla glue to make things stand off more.

    A little bit of leaf litter breaking down in your pond is fine but if left unattended for too long it can snowball into a problem. It'll make nice, rich organic silt initially but it will start to acidify the water, this can be adjusted fairly easily on a small scale by adding chalk dust to swing the balance back to neutral/slightly alkali.
    One of the lakes that I manage is a small old estate lake that is surrounded by oak trees and has a rather pressing issue due to the leaf fall every year. The silt is deep (was dug 12-15ft deep 300yrs ago, now 4-5ft) and acidic to the stage that the bacteria colonies have fallen apart and are barely able to cope with the yearly leaf fall, it is basically just partially rotten leaves piled on more partially rotten leaves, the stuff underneath is being broken down by anaerobic bacteria which releases all sorts of nasty gasses into the water. The lake needed dredging 30+ years ago but was never properly managed and now the club that has stewardship over it doesn't have the finances to solve the problem. Shame really as it's a really charming little lake but unless something changes I doubt it's got much more than 20 years before it's just a lifeless bog.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does happen.Slow process which many don't notice the deterioration. Also cutting back bankside growth helps ,but nowadays management seems to take a back seat. By the time the "committee" have decided who has sugars and who does not the problem is done.

    The oak leaves deffinatly affect the acidity of the pond, but that isn't too much of a problem. If anything the added organic matter should help fertilize your Lily pads as you mentioned but will also lead to major algae blooms in the summer, so it's entirely up to you if you remove the leaves or not. If you wanted to add fish to your pond the leaves must go as the higher acidity also increases the amount of dissolved CO2 in the water which as you could imagine is very dangerous for fish. It is however perfect for submersed aquatic plants which will also help cut back on the algae. Hope this was useful 👍
    Also thats called yellow brain fungus I see them all over the place in an oak woodland near me.

    When repairing a rod tip eye of mine, after some research it seemed a Polymide Epoxy Resin was the best. Its durable, weather and water resistant. I decided to use just hot glue as it'll be easier to remove tho. Bit for your rods and that kind of DIY id fork out for the Polymide. This was only my own research tho I'm not a pro

    YES, YES, YES remove all the fallen leaves, this is critical to the health of your fish, why, when the leaves eventually sink to the bottom, that is the danger zone because, for want of a better word 'composting' begins which, in the early stage, is achieved by a strain of bacteria for which is the term for this process is the aerobic stage, or in the presence of oxygen. So under water where are these 'aerobic' bacteria going to get the fuel they need {Oxygen} to complete their part of the 'Nitrogen cycle' from. They 'steal' the dissolved oxygen from the water, to the detriment of your fish. Have you at any time, when you have not removed these leaves, ever observed any of your fish appearing as though they are surface feeding (for some reason warm\hot air temperature seems to exacerbate the problem} they are not feeding they are gasping for air because of the 'stolen' oxygen.
    Might be worth you investing in;
    1} A dissolved oxygen test kit
    2} Do indeed monitor the PH of the water, perhaps a minimum of once every 4 weeks.
    3} Invest in a pond size air stone and a suitably sized air pump. Or any means that will create strong surface agitation as this surface agitation will aid the exchange of gases, including the replacement of much needed {dissolved} oxygen.
    You may well be rewarded by searching youTube channels, not only those dedicated to pond keepers, but also the keepers of aquarium based tropical fish as we, at one time or another find ourselves faced with the same problem {and more) that you are experiencing.
    Sorry for the length of this comment but I felt that a more {semi} in depth answer to your question, out of respect for all the advice and assistance that both you and your son have offered {freely over the years} was in order.
    Keep uploading and stay safe during these crazy times.
    Mike

    Anything rotting in your pond will reduce the PH making it more acidic. I would not recommend detritous in a pond as it can be a food source for parasites. The colour comes from the leaves dying the water. Prevention is better than cure. Stick a net on it during Autumn. I love your videos and I think you're brilliant, thank you so much for all these years your're great.

      I had some from rod building years ago. You should try your search engine for a rod builder they may have some spare they could sell you.

    I need to pick up some eyes...with the cheap rods I use, it's not even worth repairing them as a few eyes cost as much as a new rod. But...I don't want to throw out the rods I have that only need minor repair because that is wasteful. So I have a stack of broken rods that just sit there, because I'd rather spend the $15 on a new rod vs some ebay-quality eyes. I managed to pick up a stack of Shimano spinning rods for $4 CAD each...I don't even think I could buy a single eye for that price.

      Tremella mesenterica is a common jelly fungus in the family Tremellaceae of the Agaricomycotina. It is most frequently found on dead but attached and on recently fallen branches, especially of angiosperms, as a parasite of wood decay fungi in the genus Peniophora
