Great list! Love seeing people post Joe Byrd stuff. I work at a natural foods Co Op in Humboldt County. Joseph Byrd is a regular customer. I found his USA album back in the late 80's at Ear Candy in Van Nuys. Thirty years later, I'm friends with guy. Life is strange. Joseph always seems genuinely pleased and surprised when I tell him he still has fans. Hell, he probably has more now than he did back then!
Excellent list. Some great choices, especially Joe Byrd and The Field Hippies, Peanut Butter Conspiracy and The Chocolate Watchband. No Way Out has some amazing Psych songs on it. Nice copy of SF Sorrow! Tomorrow would be in my top 5. Just a fantastic album and what I think is the perfect example of UK Psych
Hi Richie, I was waiting for this one. Great stack of psych here, enjoyed em all. I am going to do a list myself. Been reading the comments to this and as always people don't read the title. "My" favorite 60''s psych albums! Nowhere on that title does it say "Your" favorite 60's psych albums! LOL, and in reality, it would be so hard to narrow them down to precision. My list will be my favorites also, the psych albums I always go back to for psych enjoyment. Thanks Richie!
My list is limited to what I have on vinyl so I couldn't make a best psych list. Like you said it's my favorites. Watched your video. Great stuff. I knew you were going to show CA Quintet.
Hey Rich, Enjoyable psych faves there along with your outside insect ambiance. I never see any Donovan, yes underrated. Jug blowing in front mix?? Nice Tomorrow and Pretty Things. I'm with you on stereo psych preference. Superb Floyd pick. Great Hendrix including cover art. Great Beatles choice. I like about 5 of their albums equally, but for sheer psych focus it's 'Magical...' and 'Sgt. Peppers' minus a few songs that I don't care for. Thanks for sharing. ~Jeff
Thanks for watching. That 13th Floor Elevators doesn't just have jug blowing but amplified jug blowing. I'm glad you liked the video. I frequently watch your older videos. The last one I watched was your Pink Floyd vinyl collection.
The mere thought of amplified jug blowing makes me cringe. I can tolerate coffee percolators or Jews harp but amplified jug? I love psych but don't own too much though my want list is huge. I enjoy your videos and commentary as well and plan revisits. Again, cool stuff for me to look into as some of it is new to me.
Great video Rich and some fine choices. Good to see Spirit's first album make the list. The summary of the jug content of each Elevators song made me chuckle. United States of America is right up there for me as well - Cloud Song is my stand out track. A bold and refreshing number one album - MMT has so many great tracks and the LP is hardly ever mentioned in the UK. Going to get the Peanut Butter Conspiracy and Tea Company albums one day... Cheers.
Hey Richie. Thank you for doing this video because it has spurred the greatest thread responses I have seen in years. I have a notebook filled with stuff I need to look into and I am sure will end up spending too much money but damn am I enjoying the ride. Awesome.
Hey Richie, I would've went with Model Shop, for Spirit and low spark Traffic, nice choices needless to say and I need to pick up, good point psych and stereo go hand and hand, always good seeing the Dead pop up and Blue Jay Way is trippy----cheers--- Lis
Whoa Richie...no Moody Blues? "To Our Children's Children's Children" gotz to be #1 all-time What the heck----'blowin jug crap" comment has me rolling on the floor!
Fantastic video, Richie! Such a great idea and you've kicked off one hell of a thread with this! I'm sure it was hard to narrow this down. Just so many great records and you've got a killer collection. Some true heavy hitters in here! I was pleasantly surprised by your number one choice. I think it's underrated too. It's probably my favorite Beatles album too. All killer no filler here!
Glad you finally produced this psych video that you have been threatening us with. Good list. Harumi was an album I got very early for $.50 in the discount bin, but I was too young for it and got rid of it. Glad to see Pretty Things and the Beatles on the list. Part 2 should be good. Thanks.
Hey Ritchie! The title made me click instantly and I am not disappointed :) What an intriguing selection - some I know and really love (Kaleidoscope, Crown Of Creation - that's easily one of my top 3 records ever, Pearls Before Swine, Chocolate Watch Band, 13th Floor Elevator! Wooohoo! Haha my husband had the same sentiments about the record, I loved it from the start but he was annoyed by the noise first as well, The Dead, Pink Floyd, Jimi) some I always wanted to check out (Spirit, Tomorrow, JK&Co, The United States Of America, The West Coast Pop Art.. and I actually haven't heard the whole Beatles album, but know the Strawberry Fields... and Walrus songs of course) and some I am not familiar with (Harumi,) and one I am hunting for for so so long - The Tea Company! So hard to get here, never see it pop up in the wild. That is a quite unstructed comment, sorry. Just have fallen out of bei after a long night :) but now the ones I want to check out are definitely added even more to the wantlist. Thanks for sharing. Much love, Diana
Well done Richie. I've always said that Magical Mystery Tour was one the of the most underrated albums in any Rock category. You had some other good LP's on your list amongst a few bad clunkers but hey, it's psych and it can be a real crapshoot.Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's real bad.
As far as I know, it's pronounce Ha-ROO-me. The love jug. Jay Kaye was the son of Mary Kaye who had a number of records out with The Mary Kaye Trio (mostly on United Artists). There were 2 Floyd albums with Syd. Q: When did Paul McCartney write silly love songs? A: From about 1962 onwards.
Pearls Before Swine was awesome on their first. Will Red Krayola, Erkin Koray and High Rise also make the list??? Now I see that Red Krayola appears in the second installment. And Erkin Koray is from the 70s and High Rise from the 80s.
I can't understand how anyone could say their first 3 were psych. They're mostly jazz rock. Sardonicus is their best, but certainly not their most psych album, there were 2 or 3 after that that were WAY more psych!
Great choices man! AXIS is my favorite Jimmy also, Love JK & Co. That album should have a massive rep, its super duper good. Cheers man, just an awesome list
Hey Vinyl Richie - I totally agree with you about the Beatles MMT being their best psych album and one of the greatest of the genre - if not the greatest LP of all time. My 3 other contenders for that are...Ten Years After: Cricklewood Green, Graffiti (self-titled on ABC Probe label), and... Jefferson Airplane: Surrealistic Pillow.
Hi Richie, That's exactly The stuff I like the most. So I will not be able to show only 20 and I'm not able to rank them, because it depends on how I feel at the moment, which record I put on which Position in My list. So I will Show some of my favorit, without a Ranking. The most, You've show'n are in my Collection to and the rest is on my wantlist. I'm completly with you with Donovan, totaly underrated. Thanx for showing this cool stuff, I will do. It in My Next Video.
Hey Rich, great choices. Really enjoyed it. Great impression of the jug on the 13th Floor elevators. Wish I had that Spirit debut on vinyl. Gotta also get SF Sorrow. Gonna use your list to guide me on my next set of psych pickups. Really solid top 3, hard to choose amongst the Hendrix. When I did my list, I had Magical Mystery Tour at #2 and Are You Exp at #1.-Lou
Just subbed your channel, great list. I have a few of those love the Traffic, Spirit, & Jefferson Airplane. Chocolate Watchband very popular just got One Step Beyond.
Hey Rich. I was waiting for a Beatles album to be #1. I did guess the wrong one though. If I did a video on this it would only prove the inadequacy of my psych collection. Great choices. Take care...
My psych collection does not run too deep. Not like dudes that have hundreds of psych albums. I do like the genre and it is one I will continue to pick up things. Psych albums have gotten too expensive though.
Sounds like I need to look out for this Peanut Butter Conspiracy album then. I had an incredible psych find last week on holiday, $75-$100 record I found in a 3 for $1 bin outside a record store. I'm a bit behind so it'll probably take me a couple of videos to get around to showing it. Great list Rich!
That seems like a super top 21, I've written down several to check out, i would never thought MMT(or sgt pep) were psych (shows how much i now i guess), thanks for doin that richie i was thinking today i need some more psych. btw listening to absolutely live by doors today what u think of celebration of lizard piece....i thought it was pretty amazing, take care bud✊🎸
a lot of obscure stuff i never heard of and to rate it so highly... steppenwolf two a fav satanic majesties zep one strange days i would have picked electric ladyland no cream? inside outside blue cheer zappa in it for the money good vid
I didn’t have a copy of Satanic Majesties when I made this video. Otherwise it would be included. Electric Ladyland has some of Jimi Hendrix’s most Psychedelic songs but I didn’t pick it because of Voodoo Chile. I need to get Insideoutside. Some of the best Psych albums are the obscure ones.
Wish you had included needle drops with these. Love the lettering on that Kaleidoscope record. Totally agree with you about the annoying electric jug on what-could-have-been-perfect 1st.Elevator record.
I think there were at least for bands with that name. I seem to recall there being one in S. America. I also agree that the "love jug" ruins most of their songs. Roky used to live about 5 miles away from me. One day, about 15 years ago, his brother, who was a local concert violinist, decided to move him to Texas with him.
Good job. Yeah, the Spirit album is strong. Mag Mystery is really good and Paul and his wanker songs always bother me too. I guess I don't know many of the psychs but I know the Nuggets Original Artyfacts albums. The Dovers were a folky psych band and the one album listened to - which might have been a collection of singles - really was great. Imagine if Hendrix and Lennon got together for "Revolver Haze"
Good to see you Rich. A great list of psych for anyone new to the genre or for anyone who wants to broaden their enjoyment. Excellent list. Where you talking about the amplified jug on the 13th Floor E's album? I was hearing it too. I thought it was the bass at first until I read the credits. Love S F Sorrow. Way to go Richie~ Rob/Boston
I totally agree with you. I think it nearly ruins some terrific songs, like "Slip Inside This House" (from Easter Everywhere). It's a stupid-sounding "instrument".
Hey Richie, love your selections. However, my top psych album would be Mr Floods Party only album which came out in 1969 on Cotillion. It is very hard to find on vinyl today although it is available on CD from a German importer.
I was so looking forward to this so I could do my version no need now. When you said no questions asked you weren't kidding. Thus us a great list. I will say I prefer Peanut Butter Conspiracies first album. I would have left the Beatles off my list but that's what us fun about this. It's all opinion. But you nailed this. Well done. I mean Chocolate Watchband? 13th Floor Elevators? Just a top list.
7:28 'Kinda garagey.' That's a song title right there. But said together like one some translated East-Asian word: 'Kindagaragi.' The track would be all sitars and tablas except for the last 8 bars of garage guitar.
Hi Mr. Vinyl Richie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Great to see someone that grew up to appreciate raw punk music actually have as his top 20 psych almums so complicated and cosmic artifacts.................... take care
I meant to say that with your background i would expect more garage-psych on your list..........instead i'm glad that you like the more cosmic complicated psychedelia as well............... Be well
Good list. A lot of artists I haven't heard of. I'd go for Anthem of the Sun or Axis: Bold as Love as my favourites from the list. Donovan is interesting: even in the 80s he still seemed popular (his 60s music I mean) but he seems to have been lost along the way. Suprised to see the Beatles there. As for Harumi, I'm keen to check him(?) out and not that it really matters too much, unless you come to Japan, but it's ha ru mi : 3 syllables, short vowel sounds, said flat with no accent and quickly and not ha ROO me : ) Btw, my Japanese sucks but you can trust me with the pronunciation.
Hi Richie, well I was drawn to the '60s Psych' title like a moth to a flame. I love Psych stuff but don't have a great deal, so about 2/3 of your selection was new to me, which is good. I've never heard of that Donovan album for a start, and thanks for clearing up the Kaleidoscope conundrum as I didn't know there were three bands going by that name - let's face it, it's an obvious choice for a psych band. The Traffic and Jefferson Airplane picks are particular favourites and what I've heard of The United States Of America album and West Coast Pop Art, they sound right up my tree. It's good the way you've titled your videos - makes it easier to pick out ones to watch - and you clearly have an eclectic taste - and a neat turn of phrase; "..elephants at the door" :) Cheers for now, Ian
Funny that - I remember him getting a lot of stick as people saw him as a Dylan copycat over here. Do you have HMS Donovan? That's one I've tried to find.
Great list ! Some I don't have . That Pearls Before Swine is good and I also recommend Balaklava their second album. You should also check out Ultimate Spinach another psychedelic group from the 60s .
Interesting video. I'm not big on psych generally...mainly because I can never find or afford the records. I like the Chocolate Watch Band. Very cool version of SF Sorrow; I have a reissue of that. It really reminded me of the Beatles' 67. Some of the most psychedelic music I know is purely electronic. The album Abduction by Eat Static comes to mind. I used to trip my nuts off to that. Nice picks though, I'll check 'em out.
Have to agree with you on Revolver. There are some psych classics on there, but Paul's vaudevillian style of writing sometimes makes me think he fought the change in sound direction of the band for a lot longer. It took him too long to embrace the tune in, turn on, and drop out sound that was happening around him. Great choices on your list (saw quite a few I need to pick up). Axis is my favorite Jimi album. Usually listen to that about 3-4 times a month. Classic record.
Vinyl Richie I agree. All three are amazing, but Axis sounds like the most complete work of the three. All of the Alan Douglas produced albums are crap as far as using session musicians and bad production goes. I do like the new releases with Kramer back in the board though. As a Hendrix fanatic though, I buy it all because I'm a sucker for anything from him.
Eleanor Rigby might not seem like a psych song, but watch the sequence that features it during the Yellow Submarine movie. It's the most mind-bending set of visuals you can imagine, but the song doesn't seem incongruous.
Excellent list, I think Spirit are one of the top three US 60's bands along with Buffalo Springfield and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental band. I have a couple of Pearls Before Swine records but am still coming to grips with them, don't have the one you showed though.
I just checked, I do have that first Pearls Before Swine record, but it has a different cover so I didn't recognise it. The other one i have is their 4th, Uses of Ashes. I will have a listen tonight.
If I were a critic, I would say..."Nice line up of some truly great psych albums. You chose wisely and gave a enjoyable presentation to boot". Yep, that is the review I would give.
Metal Theologian brought me here with his latest post. I personally like After Bathing at Baxter's over Crown of Creation, I feel it's a wilder trip. Yep, psych HAS to be heard in Stereo! What are your thoughts on the album Forever Changes by Love? Oh, and where is part 2?
I thoroughly agree with MMT being a great psych album and in that category it is ahead of Sgt. Pepper. Really enjoyed your comments here. Now I got to find The Tea Company album and the J.K & Co. album. Thanks!
J. K. was re-issued about a decade ago but the label name escapes me. I'm sure it wasn't Sundazed, but it was something close to that. I want to say, Skyline, but don't quote me.
I haven't seen all of your videos, so I might of missed it but it would be cool if you did a video of modern day Psych or even Psych from after the 60's.
That would be cool. I know that psychedelic music is making a resurgence, there is even a black metal psychedelic band, but I've always wondered if there were any in the 80s and 90s.
Nice picks. A little disappointed that my favorite Psych band didn't make your list. The first 2 Country Joe & The Fish are true classics, probably in my top 10 of psych. Give them another listen if your not familiar.
I no longer own the first Country Joe and the Fish on vinyl. I do like that album. I do own I'm Fixin To Die and listened to it before deciding what albums to show. It just didn't sound like a Psych album to me.
So I got on a 60s psych kick, came back and watched this video again, and sent away for a bunch of shit I didn't have (and pulled out some of the stuff I did). I went and looked up that American Metaphysical Circus record, and fuckin' Ghoulardi is on it, although that might not mean much if you're not from Cleveland. Blew my fucking mind though.
As i told El Rando I wish I was home to participate! Good picks although I think Harumi is probably one of the most psych albums out there..lol if not most comedic haha. Watched this 2-3 times ! Joe Byrd rules!
Naaaah, there's only one or two good psych tracks on Harumi. A good psych album on that label (Verve Forecast) is, "Playback" by The Appletree Theatre.
Great list, Rich... 13th Floor - yup, the jug distracts me so much I rarely listen as well. Suddenly One Summer - it was actually made by a 15 year old kid!
I knew Suddenly One Summer was made by a 15 year old but I forgot. If I made a video of everything that I have forgotten it would be a pretty long video.
I knew Suddenly One Summer was made by a 15 year old but I forgot. If I made a video of everything that I have forgotten it would be a pretty long video.
The sad thing about the Jug is that if they'd just had it on the first song it would have been the greatest sound ever. As it is, you just want to throttle him by the end of side 1.
Dude, you don't have the July record? Shit, that's a surprise. That is a fantastic Donovan record, and one that doesn't get a lot of attention. Didn't realize Kaleidoscope was Puerto Rican, I always thought they were Mexican too. That original PB Swine record is a great piece, even though I'm not much of a fan myself. I kinda love that jug on the first Elevators... it's mixed "better" on the second one for sure, but there's something so ineptly endearing about that sound on the first one. Man, there's so much good shit here, I could write a paragraph about every one... except JK & Co. and believe it or not, that Grateful Dead record, neither of which I've heard. And you know, I've always liked the US versions of the Beatles albums more than the UK ones, precisely because they're shorter. I have the UK version of Revolver, and the extra songs feel shoehorned in.
The only Pearls Before Swine that I like is their first. The July had a RSD release a few years back and a local store has copy that I most likely will get. With Revolver I think they removed the wrong songs. They should have axed the Paul songs instead of the John songs.
Nice list. Glad to see Mr. Fantasy getting some respect. I think Bless It's Pointed Little Head is Airplane's best mind music. Mostly agree with your comments on the electric jug on that Elevators album. I actually like its effect but it becomes a little too much of a good thing after a while imo. Agree 100% on the McCartney comments. Brilliant artist but sometimes a little sparse on substance. What's your impression of the Moody's In Search of the Lost Chord?
If I had to pick one JA album, "Bless Its Pointed Little Head" would be the one I'd go for... "In Search of the Lost Chord" is also on my list. I listened to that on my first (and only) mescaline trip. That trip was my first time for "Happy Trails" by Quicksilver Messenger Service (I know people get all orgasmic over Cipollina's playing, but, in my personal opinion, Gary Duncan was the engine that drove the band. Most people hate Chester's vocals, too, but I'm not one of them. the December 27? 1975 show at Winterland was superb.) It's a Beautiful Day's eponymous LP was also a first that night, and it is, for me, a top five tripping LP. I saw them both around '73-'74, and they were both great shows, but I have to give the edge to IABD. I saw them in Richmond VA at the Mosque, an old-style Arabesque ornate theater at the edge of the Fan District (kind of a mini Haight-Ashbury). About ten or so of us freaks got in for free because Byrd, the head of the VA Commonwealth U. Concert Committee, lived in our brownstone on Grove Ave. The band did two sets of about an hour each (time is funny when you're stoned); Patti Santos, in black fishnets, fuck-me pumps, mini miniskirt... was, uh, mesmerizing. Lights came up, and people shuffled out, except about 40 or 50 of us stayed in our seats... "Nope, we are NOT leaving, this show is NOT over!" After 15 or 20 minutes, the lights went down, the band came out, got their gear ready, and David LaFlamme said, "Now we know who our friends are," and they proceeded to tear it up for another two hours more or less. Bit of trivia: the girl on the cover of IABD's first LP is in the background of Quicksilver's "Happy Trails". BTW, somebody uploaded a Japanese pressing of "Happy Trails". Killer sound.
Tame Impala, James Gang, Genesis, The White Stripes, Earth Wind and Fire, MGMT, Mute Math, R.E.M., Lenny Kravitz, Gorillaz vs Space Monkeys, Heart, The Revolving Paint Dream, The Green Telescope, Jasmine Minks, Out of Focus, The Who, Manfred Man, Lee Perry
Not sure I get how MMT doesn't have Paul songs compared to Revolver, but yeah, I'd say it has more psych content. If they'd put "Rain" on Revolver that might've tipped the scales.
I'm guessing that you don't like jug band music. I didn't have any of those but I'll be on the lookout for the ones in your top ten. You mentioned headphones several times, what phones do you have ?
Some good stuff The Grateful Dead I think was remixed a few years later in the early 70s by the bass player Phil Lesh it had a white, cover not the one you have. a friend had it on cassette I didn't noticed the difference
Good list. I think your Mother Should Know is kinda psych or at least odd enough and is a gap to pause for the rest of the songs. But yeah, I like that album. Check out the newest DVD, The Beatles: Eight Days A Week: The Touring Years. It's a great look back and the crazy Beatlemania years, with updated sound and video. Some of those albums I haven't heard. One that I would have included would have been the Mother's Freak Out. Some say it's not psych, but everyone has their own opinions about what is, and what isn't.
Freak Out is a weird album. Some of it is psych but a lot of the songs are doo wop as far as song structure. I didn't have to consider Freak Out or Absolutely Free because I own them on CD, not vinyl. I did have to consider is other 60's albums though. Uncle Meat could have made this list. Thanks for the comment.
We're Only In It For The Money used to be my favorite album. My youngest daughter hates it. I used to play it when I picked her up at school. I would make sure the munchkin vocals were playing.
psych albums are expensive and rare even more now because of the Houston flood, alot of collections lost due to the flood, bummer, would make a good video to see what was lost. the jug is my 2 favorite instrument.was that a bowl of soup.
I have yet to find out why people think Spirit was a psych band. They didn't start delving into psych until at least Dr. Sardonicus, and even that was only 2 or 3 tracks. From Feedback onwards, they had MUCH more psych! "California psych sound" = fuzzy guitars and odd lyrics. Traffic, do you have the mono or stereo version. There were 4 different pressings, two here and two in England, each one was different. I'm okay with the Love Jug for about 3 songs, after that, it's QUITE annoying!! Yeah, S. F. Sorrow IS the first rock opera. Part of the reason it was "heavily influenced by The Beatles" was because they were in the same studio (along with Pink Floyd and Tomorrow) all recording their greatest psych stuff at the same time and, The Pretty Things borrowed George's sitar and Ringo's bass drum. Twink was also the drummer on S. F. Sorrow. Right after Tomorrow, he recorded a solo album called, "Think Pink". These days, he's changed his name and has become a muslim! I talk to him on FB every so often. J. K.'s mother, Mary Kaye, was the lead in the Mary Kaye Trio in the early `60's. That WCPAEB album is actually their 4th album. The 5th was listed as being by Markley. Shortly after the 5th album came out, Bob Markley got into a lot of trouble for being a pedophile! MMT WAS released in England, it's just that it was released as the double 7" e.p. that it was intended to be! We didn't do E.P.'s over here and Capitol, out & out whores that they were, had a backlog of Beatle stuff they hadn't released yet, so, they went for a full album and made side two a collection of singles material that hadn't been released on albums, yet!
Nice list I must say. Anyone praising John Lennon stuff, speaking high of Dark Star by Grateful Dead, and bashing pop stuff Paul McCartney brought to Beatles albums qualifies for my compliment.
How long have you been collecting psych? I lived entirely through the `60's and have been collecting records since at least `59 and I never ONCE heard the term "punk" used to describe music until the late `70's! A friend of mine, as well as other RECENT collectors of garage and psych claim garage has ALWAYS been called, "punk" and that "garage" was just a term a scant few people used!
I agree with all your choices but one instead of the Beatles I would have chosen Electric Prunes first. And Grateful dead ..no thanks hawkwind or High tides firsts.
Good choice at number 1. The Beatles' Revolver though....the Paul songs make that album what it is...yeah not a 100% psych album, but the Beatles never did a 100% album in any genre. That's one of the reasons their stuff has lasted. It's the same with Rubber Soul; could have been a 100% folk-rock album, but then they threw through R&B, country and French pop into it to annoy the folk fans.
Damn. Vinyl Richie is the man.... i love that there’s no filler no BS in his videos
Thanks for the comment.
Ok, SF Sorrow is on it so I'm good. Have you heard the Introspection LP by The End? That's a classic for me.
I have not heard that album.
Introspection is great. I bought the RSD release.
Very cool that have met Joe Byrd. He no doubt has more fans now.
Thanks for the comment and good to see you back.
Hi Richie, I was waiting for this one. Great stack of psych here, enjoyed em all. I am going to do a list myself. Been reading the comments to this and as always people don't read the title. Watched your video. Great stuff. I knew you were going to show CA Quintet.
Wow fantastic psychedelic albums congratulations 👏🎉 I have spychedelic albums too
Thanks for watching
Best criticism of overt use of the jug in the 13th Floor Elevators.
Once again, brilliant list.
The jug would have been cool is used sparingly. Certainly turned down. Thanks for watching.
Some great picks in there! Love me some psych!
If I made that video now it would be a bit different. I have bought some really great 60’s Psych albums since then.
Thanks for watching.
I’ve picked up a lot recently! Sure I’ll show some in my next video!
Thanks for watching. That 13th Floor Elevators doesn't just have jug blowing but amplified jug blowing. I'm glad you liked the video. I frequently watch your older videos. The last one I watched was your Pink Floyd vinyl collection.

I think you would like the JK and Company album. It is on youtube.
Cheers for the recommendation. Will certainly check it out. Just saw a copy go for nearly fifty quid on EBay!
Hey Richie. Thank you for doing this video because it has spurred the greatest thread responses I have seen in years. I have a notebook filled with stuff I need to look into and I am sure will end up spending too much money but damn am I enjoying the ride. Awesome.
The whole favorite Psych thing has been done before so I was a bit surprised by the response.
The whole favorite Psych thing has been done before so I was a bit surprised by the response.
Nice! I didn't see a single re-issue. Can't argue your list. Happy listening.
Hey Richie, I would've went with Model Shop, for Spirit and low spark Traffic, nice choices needless to say and I need to pick up, good point psych and stereo go hand and hand, always good seeing the Dead pop up and Blue Jay Way is trippy----cheers--- Lis
Blue Jay Way is very trippy. I'm surprised I didn't mention that.
Kaleidoscope was Pouerto Ricans but recorded the album in Mexico
Thanks for the comment. I did make that correction in a later video.
Happy New Year
Whoa Richie...no Moody Blues? "To Our Children's Children's Children" gotz to be #1 all-time What the heck----'blowin jug crap" comment has me rolling on the floor!
I need to get me some Moody Blues.
Thanks for watching. I was surprised at the response videos.
Glad you finally produced this psych video that you have been threatening us with. Good list. Harumi was an album I got very early for $.50 in the discount bin, but I was too young for it and got rid of it. Glad to see Pretty Things and the Beatles on the list. Part 2 should be good. Thanks.
Thanks for watching. Your turn.
These are really great picks. Thanks for turning me on to The Tea Company 👍
Thanks for watching and I love unstructed comments.
No clunkers here. Lol.
Don't know if it's mentioned below but Jay Kaye was from Las Vegas and did that "Summer" album when he was 15!!!
Remarkable
I love 13th floor elevators. Seen Roky 3 times here in Sweden. Listning to spirit right now. Groovy
Roky is fantastic.
13th Floor Elevator out of Austin. Nothing like seeing them at the Vulcan so long ago but at times it's like yesterday.
It must have been great.
Just got into this kind of music, thank you for these awesome albums mentioned.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I'm going to use that Paul joke in a future video.
Try my rock nusic channel..thanks.
Good list. Nice to see S.F Sorrow and Mr. Fantasy on the list.
Thanks for watching. I have said it before but I'm a big Traffic fan.
The crown of creation is one of my favorite albums from that era!❤❤❤
Pearls Before Swine was awesome on their first. Will Red Krayola, Erkin Koray and High Rise also make the list??? Now I see that Red Krayola appears in the second installment. And Erkin Koray is from the 70s and High Rise from the 80s.
I love the first Pearls Before Swine.
Spirit's first 4 albums are all great. Their 4th, The twelve dreams of Dr Sardonicus, is their most iconic and certainly their most psychedelic.
Spirit is an under rated 60’s LA band. I do have Dr Sardonicus. The Family That Plays Together and Clear are both good albums that should pick up.
Thanks for watching.
JK and Company is fantastic. By the way, thanks for turning me onto Harumi.
Jug crap lol
Top notch psych list Richie. I need to track down a copy of JK & Co. It never shows up in the wild here in Norway. Take care!
Nico
NicoMalcolm I guess I need to do the same Nico. I guess we are missing out !
JK and Company is fantastic. There are so many great psych albums that I need to find.
I’m a big fan of Cricklewood Green but I kept it at 60’s albums. Sssh is another favorite.
Thanks for watching. I watched your first response video. I will watch the rest tonight.
Check out Dead Wax66's list. That dude has a great psych collection.
Just subbed your channel, great list. I have a few of those love the Traffic, Spirit, & Jefferson Airplane. Chocolate Watchband very popular just got One Step Beyond.
One year later I would like to thank you for the comment. I plan on making another 60’s Psych video.
Thanks for watching.
One of the biggest holes in my vinyl collection is the absence of the Doors.
a lot of obscure stuff i never heard of and to rate it so highly...
steppenwolf two a fav
satanic majesties
zep one
strange days
i would have picked electric ladyland
no cream?
inside outside blue cheer
zappa in it for the money
good vid
I didn’t have a copy of Satanic Majesties when I made this video. Otherwise it would be included. Electric Ladyland has some of Jimi Hendrix’s most Psychedelic songs but I didn’t pick it because of Voodoo Chile. I need to get Insideoutside.
Some of the best Psych albums are the obscure ones.
Was in the mood for some Psych & found this video. Fantastic !
Thanks for watching. I need to make another Psych video. There were many that I didn’t share and many more that I’ve picked up since.
Wish you had included needle drops with these. Love the lettering on that Kaleidoscope record. Totally agree with you about the annoying electric jug on what-could-have-been-perfect 1st.Elevator record.
Needle drops would have been better and I may do them some time in the future. Sorry for the late response.
I would argue Axis Bold As Love by Hendrix is the number one psych album of all time mainly because of the song If 6 was 9.
I can't really argue with that since I had it at 3, if I remember right.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Way to go Richie~
Rob/Boston
That amplified jug is annoying.
I will check that out. I’ve never heard it.
I don't think the first Peanut Butter Conspiracy is all that Psychedelic.
I still expect a video.
Vinyl Richie I need to give it some good thought. Between you and Randy so much of the good stuff is covered.
7:28 'Kinda garagey.' That's a song title right there. But said together like one some translated East-Asian word: 'Kindagaragi.' The track would be all sitars and tablas except for the last 8 bars of garage guitar.
That would be a good one.
Hi Mr. Vinyl Richie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Great to see someone that grew up to appreciate raw punk music actually have as his top 20 psych almums so complicated and cosmic artifacts....................
take care
Thanks for watching. I will make another favorite psych albums video. Most likely my favorite punk albums will come first.
I meant to say that with your background i would expect more garage-psych on your list..........instead i'm glad that you like the more cosmic complicated psychedelia as well...............
Be well
I don't know why I don't own that 13th floor elevators. New shit I need to check out
Thanks for the pronunciatio though I'm not going to Japan any time soon, unless I hit the lottery. Check out some of these on youtube.
Here is a cool link that has a lot of these albums on it.

Thanks for watching. If you don't mind can I suggest a video to watch, Super 7"- #1.
It is surprising that Donovan was so much more popular in the US.
Absolutely! I noticed that and decided to watch later. Anything you want to suggest, go for it.
Funny that - I remember him getting a lot of stick as people saw him as a Dylan copycat over here. Do you have HMS Donovan? That's one I've tried to find.
I don't think so. What does HMS stand for.
Great list ! Some I don't have . That Pearls Before Swine is good and I also recommend Balaklava their second album. You should also check out Ultimate Spinach another psychedelic group from the 60s .
I’m making a part 2 Psych video and Ultimate Spinach will be featured. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I used to trip pretty hard to electric Miles.
Thank you for this, so much great music to explore.
Thanks for watching. I need to make a part two.
@@vinylrichie007 I agree ;)
Have to agree with you on Revolver. There are some psych classics on there, but Paul's vaudevillian style of writing sometimes makes me think he fought the change in sound direction of the band for a lot longer. It took him too long to embrace the tune in, turn on, and drop out sound that was happening around him. Great choices on your list (saw quite a few I need to pick up). Axis is my favorite Jimi album. Usually listen to that about 3-4 times a month. Classic record.
I like all three Experience albums but Axis is the one I listen to the most.
Thank You for the leads😊
@@jaymesjmathias9390 Thank you for watching,
Excellent list, I think Spirit are one of the top three US 60's bands along with Buffalo Springfield and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental band. I have a couple of Pearls Before Swine records but am still coming to grips with them, don't have the one you showed though.
I'm not really a fan of the other Pearls Before Swine albums.
I just checked, I do have that first Pearls Before Swine record, but it has a different cover so I didn't recognise it. The other one i have is their 4th, Uses of Ashes. I will have a listen tonight.
Thats the only Sprit Album I'm looking for
I still need their first.
If I were a critic, I would say..."Nice line up of some truly great psych albums. You chose wisely and gave a enjoyable presentation to boot". Yep, that is the review I would give.
Thank you very much. So are you saying it wasn't you that gave the video a thumbs done.
I really like Forever Changes but I don't have it on vinyl. I think it is time to do a part 2.
Thanks for watching.
I thoroughly agree with MMT being a great psych album and in that category it is ahead of Sgt. Pepper. Really enjoyed your comments here. Now I got to find The Tea Company album and the J.K & Co. album. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. Magical Mystery Tour is one of my favorites. I do love Sgt Peppers though.
J. K. was re-issued about a decade ago but the label name escapes me. I'm sure it wasn't Sundazed, but it was something close to that. I want to say, Skyline, but don't quote me.
I haven't seen all of your videos, so I might of missed it but it would be cool if you did a video of modern day Psych or even Psych from after the 60's.
I just saw this comment. I just made a part two of favorite 60's Psych albums. I will do a modern day Psych video.
That would be cool. I know that psychedelic music is making a resurgence, there is even a black metal psychedelic band, but I've always wondered if there were any in the 80s and 90s.
Hi..i have rocking site..come visit..
Vinyl Richie - That's what makes all this fun, difference of opinions.
First one is the one, I say.
Great list of essential psychedelic albums! I will make a response video. I have a feeling a few of yours will also appear in my list.
Thanks for the comment and I'm sure your list will be great.
Thanks, Richie. I have uploaded my video.
When you get home I'm expecting a video.
What a great observation James. I couldn't have said it better.
Jefferson Airplane , i usually like Takes Off pretty high on the list
I love Takes Off.
The amplified jug on that album is just too loud. I have a pair of Sony and a pair of Sennheiser headphones. Both in the $100 price range.
hope you got videos to check out some awesome lps there you got
Where is Satanic Majesty's Request by Rolling Stones? Should have been on this list. Stuff by Love is also missing.
Some good stuff The Grateful Dead I think was remixed a few years later in the early 70s by the bass player Phil Lesh it had a white, cover not the one you have. a friend had it on cassette I didn't noticed the difference
I’ve seen the Grateful Dead album with the white cover. I did not know it was a remix.
Your right, "Paul McCartney's" songs are not too "psychedelic", but he still wrote some great classics!
Paul was a great song writer.
great concept might be to take the year1968 and show great music put out that year alone,an idea.actually 1967 would also work but 1968 was epic
That is a good idea
Is there a cricket chirping?
@@vinylrichie007--it's one of Matt Groening's (Simpsons) favorite albums.
psych albums are expensive and rare even more now because of the Houston flood, alot of collections lost due to the flood, bummer, would make a good video to see what was lost. the jug is my 2 favorite instrument.was that a bowl of soup.
Is kazoo your favorite?
I just started watching this video and the chirping sound is really bothering me. I will comment on the content separately.
I still think Magical Mystery Tour is a great album. Side Two kicks ass.
Yeah, great stuff, but I prefer the original e.p. version.
Sorry for the late response. You are right 60's Garage was not always called Punk. In fact no one in the 60's used the term Punk.
Great
cool i love psych
thanks for watching.
love- forever changes?
Great video
Thanks for watching
No Blue Cheer??
New Improved Blue Cheer is fantastic.
I agree with all your choices but one instead of the Beatles I would have chosen Electric Prunes first. And Grateful dead ..no thanks hawkwind or High tides firsts.
That Grateful Dead is a Psych classic. I really like the first two Electric Prunes albums but they both have weak songs.
Mort Garson, The Zodiac - Cosmic Sounds
Sorry for the late reply. It has been years since I have heard that album. If I remember right there was narration that ruined it for me.
I have that Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies album. You're right, it's really weird.
It's weird but I love it.
@@vinylrichie007 I'm going to give it another listen.
SF Sorrow is a rock opera.
I suppose. I always thought that name was a bit much.
I like Crown of Creation better than Surrealistic Pillow
I like it just as much.
The jug is one of my favorite parts of the 13th floor elevators
The jug is fine but it doesn't need to be mixed so that it is as loud as the vocals.
Not the cowbell?
Chocolate watch band !!
Chocolate Watchband are great.
I first heard of these guys via an article about psych music in High Times magazine.
I speak Japanese and can give you some help. Ha-Roo-Me. Vowel sounds in Japanese are the same as Hawaiian.
Thank you. My daughter took Japanese in college. I guess I could have asked her.
The Fugs The Incredible String Band was Acid soaked sugar cubes Ultimate Spinach Man Paper Garden
I never got into the Fugs but the Incredible String Band are incredible.
Some of the Paul songs on Revolver are great, some not so much. But it is the John and George songs that make Revolver what it is.
