  • Few figures in history have attained the legendary status of pirate captains. Their names evoke images of adventure, plundered treasure, and freedom on the high seas. But as we sail through the waters of history, it's essential to discern fact from fiction and separate the genuine stories of these maritime leaders from the myths that have surrounded them. Pirate captains have long been the subjects of fascination, their lives romanticized and embellished by literature, art, and film. Yet beneath the veneer of eye patches, peg legs, and parrots, a more complex reality awaits discovery. In this voyage through history, we'll embark on a quest to uncover the true essence of pirate captains. In this exploration of pirate captains, we'll delve beyond these mythical portrayals and seek to unveil the authentic lives, challenges, and exploits of these seafaring leaders who have left an indelible mark on history, far beyond the eye patches and peg legs of lore. How about an episode on suspected treasure burial sites

    • @ThePiratesPort
      @ThePiratesPort  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That was mostly fiction. Aside from a few instances where it made sense to hide it and then come back shortly after they were far more interested in spending rather than saving.

      Press ganging is a subject that has fascinated me since I was a kid. My dad had a metal tankard with the glass bottom - and explained the coin in the drink thing to me and the reason why the glass bottom was there in the first place. Over here in the pubs in London and by the coast men were recruited by the navy, merchant navy and by pirates!....well according to my old man anyway. I now have the tankard myself, and enjoy the occasional beer out of it myself!

    What's your personal opinion on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise? Do you enjoy the fantasy world they've created? Or as an expert on pirates is it too unrealistic for you to enjoy?

      First one got a surprising amount of details right.. aside from the supernatural stuff of course. But i love the original 3! The rest felt like they were just milking it dry to me.

    One question: Was there a big difference between pirate captains and privateer captains?

    • @ThePiratesPort
      @ThePiratesPort  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! Well, privateers had a legal backing to capture ships during war. It was more or less state sponsored piracy. But that meant they couldn’t go after anyone they wanted. Pirates in the golden age originally followed suit and didn’t attack their own countries vessels but eventually that mentality changed.

      I’ve read that theory but it seems to be coincidence. Depp has said many times he based the character off of rock stars and, from what I understand, the Jack Sparrow that was written in early drafts was much different. Its certainly possible he was an inspiration but personally I don’t see it.
