    Thanks so much for this video! After 3 iterations of a pond filter using course and fine and rocks….in a separate container…it worked…kind of…but cleaning was horrible, I am now doing an intake bay and a bog. Well….we are planning now. You have given me as much info as I need on the intake portion! I can’t wait to see more of your vids. We’re gonna get it right this time for our 5 large Koi and 13 tiny call ducks - each with their own pond. 😅 thanks again!

    I see how you designed this as a skimmer. I was looking at building a wetland filter with the centipede and snorkel. I actually want to build the wetland at the top of the waterfall (like a soft volcano), trickling into a 3 tier waterfall. Have you done something like that? Have you any videos on it?
    I learned a lot from this video towards my idea. I just want to fine-tune it before I actually start it.

    Really appreciate this video, Carl. You're a wealth of knowledge. I'm about to build my first intake bay, and I have a couple questions if you have a moment:
    How do you calculate sizing/number of aquablox? I'd heard that the target was 1 gal of aquablox storage for every GPM of flow you're pulling through it. That would mean your 22k GPH of pumps would need about 370 gal worth of aquablox. But you only have 100 gal in this build. How did you get to that design?
    How did you determine width of weir? I think you said this one has (2) 24" weirs. That's pretty close to 1" per 1,000 gallons of flow. Is it as simple as that?
    Bonus question: Why is the pump vault necessary if you have external pumps and nothing inside the vault to service? Seems like you could save space and cost by omitting them. I've always wondered that, but everyone uses them, so assume there must be a good reason.

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens
      @ColumbiaWaterGardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those are all really solid questions.
      First, thanks for the kind words.
      ****** 1500-2000 GPH is normal or 750 GPH per square foot of intake. You can increase flow if the pond isn't surrounded by too many trees and if the velocity exceeds the gravel that could be blocking the intake. I have done as much as 20k GPH on 2 large aquablox - successfully!
      How did you determine width of weir? I think you said this one has (2) 24" weirs. That's pretty close to 1" per 1,000 gallons of flow. Is it as simple as that?
      ******* Water flows at 100 GPH/quarter inch wide / horizontal inch. That means that a 10 inch weir that allows 2 1/2 inches of fall will flow 10,000 GPH.
      Bonus question: Why is the pump vault necessary if you have external pumps and nothing inside the vault to service? Seems like you could save space and cost by omitting them. I've always wondered that, but everyone uses them, so assume there must be a good reason.
      ******** To clean the intake bay periodically and to baffle the flow of water into the external pump intake. Also, to allow room for an autofill and other future devices that may hit the market.
      Thanks for your great questions, and if you have more, please call me at 888-713-7771 x4. If I don't answer, please leave a message :)

    I did stumble upon your video thank you. I am in the process of creating a pond and water fall. It will be anywhere from 800-1600 gallons. The water fall filter will be 8'+ above the pump. I was wondering the difference/what's better with skimmer or intake bay? Pond abuts the woods so lots of leaves/pine needles will be falling. Which one would you recommend, what size pump? I'm also looking for more of your vids

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens
      @ColumbiaWaterGardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the size pond you have, I'd stick with an Aquascape 1000 skimmer and a small wetland to process the tannins that will come from the trees.

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens

      The depth of the rocks on top of the bay shouldn't be very deep. Remember that the deeper you make it, the greater the biomass that will collect and cause clogs.

    You lost me at, "not over-complicate it." If it's worth doing, it's worth over-complicating! Mr. double-barreled, dual overhead intake, perfectly flush aquaboxing, fancy pipe and scree using, check out my line level and string workin, rock variety for days flexing, rock pad fabricing, flow rate mathing, waterfall foaming, why didn't you mention uplighting, and why not toss a fountain in all that open space...oh wait, you said it was someone else's build and you were just visiting. Nevermind. Though it did bring up a painful reminder that my string level isn't where I thought I put it and I'm worried I've lost it. That's two losses in one video, not sure I can go on after this.

    How do you decide how deep the intake bay needs to be

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens

    • @rachelrose8571

      So how do you determine the size based on the pump

    • @ColumbiaWaterGardens
      @ColumbiaWaterGardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a lot of factors and no industry standard as environmental impact can affect the size of the intake greatly.
      For example, in the desert, we can get away with far fewer aquablox than in the Midwest or the mountains where there is a great deal of falling leaves.
      I'm going to come back to this question later today as I have a wetland to dig this morning.
