      Brett, have you ever smelt iron before?
      It smells a LOT like bilberries.
      🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
      Brett, I"m Johnny level. Rodney level.
      Brett, you gotta be lobbying for me to write North Shore II.
      You know I'm the only one around that can write it.
      I'm a 70s guy. I came up through the evolution. My first board was a single fin. Second board a twin.
      tldr;
      You know why you need the charcoal, right Brett - there's 2 reasons actually.
      1) increase the temperature - it burns hotter since there's no water in it.
      2) provide carbon monoxide for the reaction to occur to free the iron (from the oxide)
      You're not gonna smelt your iron without your charcoal, so I hope you know how to make that.

    Fantastic video- as always! I hope you guys get a giant striper blitz in the surf and you can make a video on that... This is the time of year when it can happen and I am wondering how many times you have caught them in the suirf. One Christmas about 15 years ago I was catching 30 pound stripers in the surf up at Nags Head every cast- I was actually hooking them with an 8 weight fly rod, it was pure mayhem as those fish were everywhere. Between the surf potential and the fishing potential the Outer Banks really is a unique place on this planet. I think it is incredible that you are right there at the epicenter of all that and you are able to document how awesome that little strip of sand is....Thank you again Brett for the great videos!!!

    It's also the angle of that ripping offshore wind. When we see conditions like that with a ripping offshore wind, it's full RED ELERT status. Usually, we only see about 1 day (usually half a day) of epic conditions after a front blasts offshore. So every minute is so valuable to get into the surf. I've seen days where its gone from over-head barrels with huge rainbow offshore spray to completely flat in 3-6 hours. It all depends if the front keeps pushing hard offshore or it stalls or slows down just off the coast (the dream setup - that doesn't happen too often). Usually when offshore winds blow that hard, the front will keep pushing offshore and the wind eventually beats it down to nothing. We had perfect waves on Mother's Day. Even today I feel bad because I just had to go out because the surf was so good (smooth as glass and chest to just overhead surf). So I did my best to divide up the day, but I still can't get that day out of my head. When the surf is perfect, you'll pretty much miss out on anything to get at least a short session in, especially if you live somewhere that rarely gets good. Christmas Day -- I would have been in the water for sure (at least part of the day if I was in town).

  • @camerondavid8089
    @camerondavid8089 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting thoughts about less south swells now than previously. With a warming planet, the jet stream moves further away from the equator. In this year, La Nina has allowed that jet to drop further south than years prior, allowing pre-frontal south winds to fill the swell windows of the middle/north eastern US (hence reminiscent of better S swells in years past)... or at least thats my best guess haha.

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not that there’s been less south swells... we’ve been in a similar rotation of north and south swells in recent years as we were in older years. It’s that for many years the south swells wouldn’t get good... underperforming size and shape wise, where as years past they would all be of similar shape and quality.
      I believe it has a lot to do with Diamond Shoals... shallower they are, the more they break up the swell. Deeper they are... or more holy, the more swell can fill in

    • @camerondavid8089
      @camerondavid8089 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brettbarley Super interesting. Do you know how shallow those shoals get? South swells are typically shorter period. The waves may not even touch the bottoms there.

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@camerondavid8089 I'm well aware of bathymetry and swell energy depths... Those shoals stretch 10 miles due SE of Cape Hatteras, with a maximum depth of 30ft or so, while most places are less. So when a swell is due South or SSW, it has to travel over those shoals, and once upon a time, use to make it fine... then started getting blocked more (to my assumption, due to shallower shoals).
      But even an Easterly swell can be effected by those shoals as it comes in... because the swell lines hit there first and will start bending, while the main East swell to the north of the shoals continues it's straight line in. So things hit the beach at varying angles. It's pretty wild...

    • @camerondavid8089
      @camerondavid8089 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brettbarley That is pretty wild... turning an E swell into a weaker ENE-ish swell. You say the shoals go out due SE from the cape... hinting that the near shore current brought the sand from the North. I wonder if the increase in dredging projects in New England and southward could be depositing these looser sediments or if it's more of a local OBX imact.... or erosion increasing in general...

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shoals are shaped due to the Labrador current and Gulfstream colliding offshore. Thats why Hatteras is shaped the way it is, and that’s why the entire East coast is shaped the way it is. Has nothing to do with dredging or recent erosion

      No... we often get good waves. Just had been rare in recent years for a south swell to get that good. But it’s not like I rarely get barreled.
      Family tradition is spending time together celebrating Christ on Christmas... that’s way radder than leaving the family all day to go surf, Like I do the rest of the year when there’s waves. Also the idea that my wife, kids, & in laws would want to go sit in the freezing cold 25mh sand blasting wind on Christmas Day is silly haha. Asking them to would just be selfish and inconsiderate.

      Also I can’t find it now, but saw you commented about water quality... there’s no sewers here at all, and no runoff since it’s such small villages and very little concrete. Our water is as clean as it gets year round.
      The water color you see is from the sand sediment... we could be in a 2 month drought, and when a swell kicks up, or even hard winds, the water still turns brown. You can watch it go from blue to brown in a day when swell/winds ramp up. All just about the sediment... it goes right back to being clear and pretty when swell/winds die down.

    Hey Brett. I saw your reply to the comment from Fickle Media. I’m a Christian myself and I have a couple of questions for you. As you are a practicing Christian perhaps it would have been better to use that time in the afternoon another way. Perhaps you might have collected the leftovers from your lunch and found some homeless people to give them too. Just a thought.
    Also. Do you take your family to church every Sunday morning regardless of what the swell is doing?
    Finally. Ive been following your vlog for over a year now and I’ve never heard you say anything about your faith. Surely having such a massive audience would be an ideal platform for you spread the good word about your lord and saviour.

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tyler, I appreciate the questions. Sorry for the late reply... but you asked some deep questions, and I wanted to respond when I would have the time to be able to fully answer.
      First off... we dont have a homeless population here. And those in tight financial, or physical, struggles do actually get supported with food when needed by an organization on the island called "Hatteras Island Meals". We also just had a simple breakfast with my dad, then were cooking dinner... so there were no hypothetical leftovers to go hand out even if there was a place to do so. I'm not sure your need to come up with a random scenario for me to spend my time differently than going surfing for an hour in between family time and cooking? I mean... by that logic, literally every scenario in life could be combatted with a "well why didn't you do this more awesome thing instead?". Is that a beneficial, productive, or encouraging mindset? Especially when speaking to someone you dont know.... (though I didn't) how would you know I didn't do such a thing the day before, or after, or that night even? Is Christmas a more important day to give and share Jesus' love with others than any other day? No... All of our days we are called to serve others, Love God, and live a life in reflection of him.
      Is your basis simply because I didn't talk about it online? Because we are actually called to do our acts of giving in private... Matthew 6:1-4 "Be careful not to do your "acts of righteousness" before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in Heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
      I'veisn't
      Yes... pre-covid my family and I go to church most every Sunday. We live over an hour from the church we go to, so we dont get there every Sunday, and watch online if not. There isn't a non-denominational in our area that doesn't follow some sort of altered gospel, which is why we make the 1hr 20min drive up to one in town. The only time I'd skip is if it was the 1 day of good waves for the week, and needed to work... My schedule doesn't revolve around Mon-Fri like most people, which is hard, so I have to plain accordingly around the weather. To be clear though, simply going to church, for the sake of being there and saying you did, means nothing though if Jesus isn't reflected in your life. Plenty of people go to church every Sunday, not even missing 1, and don't actually have a relationship with Christ. They walk out those doors and live a life far opposite of one walked with Christ. As Jesus said in Mathew 7:21-23 "Not everyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord", will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophecy in your name, and in your name drive out demons, and perform many miracles?" Then I will tell them plainly, "I never knew you. Away from me evildoers!"
      The Lords will for our lives is to know him, be in communion with him, and thus a result of that is the desire to spend time with other believers in worship, and learning/growing together in the word. Having a sabbath is what's important... but it doesn't matter what day that falls on, and looks differently for some than others.
      If you've been following my channel for over a year and haven't heard me share about Jesus, then you have missed videos (that't totally fine... I post a lot). And I'd assume you dont follow me on instagram either, based off that statement. Last spring I went through a few episodes when lockdowns started, encouraging everyone with scripture and personal testimony as I felt lead. It was a time the Lord lead me to use my channel to do so, and it was awesome... I also released an entire video in June solely on loving your neighbor as yourself, based in scripture. I'm sorry you missed those videos... but feel free to go back and check em out. There's a couple listed below.
      S2: Ep. 25
      Q&A
      S2: Ep. 28
      Loving others as ourselves
      The thing is...
      I'm a professional surfer, and I run social media and TH-cam as part of my job now.
      I'm a Christian.
      I have the control over my channels to share the gospel, and get to whenever the Lord leads me. BUT... just as a plumber who is a Christian doesn't show up at your house preaching every time, neither do I spend every video sharing teachings of Jesus. I try to make my life a reflection of Christ in how I speak, live, and love others... Specifically because I am not a Teacher, and have not been lead into that role. There are also so many false teachers in the world, preaching one thing, and living a vastly different way, that I have seen FAR to many people shy off from Jesus because of them.... People hear the gospelt all the time, but what they need is to SEE it.
      Everyones walk with the Lord is going to look differently... As Paul spoke about in 1Corinithians 12:4-11 "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different Kisers of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines."
      We should never judge someones life, or relationship with the Lord, based off what we see on the internet... What you see online is only a fraction of someones real life, and what happens in real life matters more than what happens on the internet. We are called to "love our neighbor as ourselves", and that quite literally means those whom are in our direct lives. We cannot possibly cater to the whole world online, and nor are we suppose to.
      Can we use the internet to share the gospel? yes!
      Are some called to do that wholeheartedly as their ministry? yes!
      But, not all are called the same... and we should never look at it as if they are.
      God's will for our lives is not a checklist of things we have to get done... People make it that way in a superficial, or surface level, attempt, but Jesus simply calls us to "Love the Lord your God with with all our heart and with all your mind and with all your soul. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the laws nd prophets hang on these two commandments." - Matthew 22: 37-40
      Have a good one man. I hope that helps with understanding, and maybe with encouragement in the word for God's will in your own life as well. Thanks for reaching out and take care.

      He grew up on punk rock too. You'd think every now and then he'd throw some of that in. I can't stand the music in surf videos today

      Can’t afford good punk rock... I spend a lot of time looking for the best music to suite the mood of whatever is going on in my videos. Unfortunately there’s really NO half decent punk rock on the sites I buy music from. There’s some average rock songs now and then, but not good. For whatever reason there’s just way more decent electronic to pick and choose from.
      If I had some huge budget, then Ya I’d use some good punk rock.

      Hahaha going deep on us.
      - honestly NONE of the artists on the sites I have subscriptions too would actually classify as “punk” to me. And based off their sound alone, they are a far cry from ever being in the ballpark of “good” at even whatever genre they are suppose to be. Which is why I just end up using electronic music.
      -I mean what I consider punk rock (as in the bands I grew up on in that genre) may not even be true punk rock... but that’s beyond me. I just base it off sound for the most part, not integrity as much. So I’m wrong person to ask.

    Sorry Brett. Ive gotta tell you my respect level has dropped. Choosing that commercial nonsense over surfing will only encourage your kids to do the same. You should have surfed all day. Your fam would have respected you more for that even if they didn’t like it.

      Choosing commercial nonsense over surfing??? What are you talking about? Christmas isn’t about gifts and things... it’s about Jesus Christ. Our savior coming to earth to save us from our own wrongdoings and sins.
      Surfing all day instead of spending time with my family celebrating Christ would literally be the epitome of self-centered selfishness.
