Hey Brett, your son is a growing ripper! Any thoughts for dads like me who have sons a bit younger than yours and how to best introduce them to the surf and the power of the ocean in general? My son is 6 and has only done slight shorebreak bodysurfing and boarding. He watches me paddle out but I can tell he still doesn't understand his own abilities and has gotten into some sketch situations before without even knowing it. When did you feel okay with your son paddling out/seeking breaks independently or is that still part of your teaching process?
Time at the beach and in the water is most crucial…. My wife’s been a stay at home mom for our kids lives and it’s allowed them to grow up in the ocean. As much as I’ve helped teach them, their straight time in the water cause of all the beach days she’d do with them while I was working is what I think makes the biggest difference in comfortability for them. Most important thing is to make sure they are good swimmers then teach em to be comfortable in situations that feel overwhelming for them. So going in with them in waters that seem slightly beyond what they want and just talking em through everything. Talk em through waves coming, how to read em, what to do to go under, the reality that hold downs are less than 5-6sec, stuff like that…

How much he's progressed over the last like 9-12 months is insane. At this rate I think he'll end up being better than his father, which is awesome.
