- It’s time for RIO seat version of the inaugural no checklist startup tutorial for the DCS World F-14 by Heatblur. The RIO startup is mostly a lot of waiting. If you are doing a real deal mission you might be spending a lot of your time input waypoints or surf target points. But for the most part, the process is turn on the various panels and waiting for INS alignment. This video will show 4 different ways to do an alignment, a land alignment, a carrier alignment, and then both land and carrier with an Automatic Stored Heading.

I’m a pilot but I’m looking for a good rio🦧👍🏼😶🌫️
This is very helpful, but there's one thing I want to point out that took me HOURS to discover the first time out. Following this startup procedure, the master caution and advisory panel will be warning you about "AWG 9 CONF", which indicates that the liquid cooling has not been turned on. I'm not sure if failing to address that will result in issues with the radar or AIM-54, but the manual says it does and I cannot tolerate a master caution. The liquid cooling switch is hidden under the left canopy support rail at 9 o'clock and the labels are incredibly hard to read. I cannot see it at all without moving my head down a bit. Hopefully this helps anybody who, like me, came back to this video trying to figure out how to clear the caution and couldn't find the "LIQ COOLING" switch casually mentioned in the manual!
At the moment this switch isn't labeled at all.
Fwd means only AWG-9 cooling and aft means AWG-9 & Aim-54 cooling enabled. Aim-54 cooling is only necessary for the A model, so if you equipped the C model, you can move that switch forward.
Also turn the WCS into standby is only allowed after both engines are running and the ECS is set to both. (This guarantees the proper cooling of the system)

You're right. RIO cold-start training mission tells you to turn on WCS to aft position for cooling both. This video skips and doesn't mention it.

Neither of my squad mates can be bothered to deal with the big scary switches, so they get to snuggle with the big chunky front canopy rails and do all the night traps for me.

Dcs is in partner ship with some of the most amazing developers for aircraft modules, as a pilot in training for my private licence and eventually going to fly old world war aircraft trainers and World War Two era propellors with Vintage wings over Canada, I can easily say learning even the simplest modules for the P-51D mustang and the Russian Yak 52 helped excel the start up and all of the flight procedures a lot. Eventually I wanna fly trainers like the t1 and the t4

So oddly enough using the CAINS does not seem to set the coordinates (LAT / LONG) in your video, is that correct? Do you need to enter those yourself? Does CAINS also provide ALT and MAG VAR (I think you forgot to set that BTW, can be done in CAP NAV mode)
Ya, cains as far as i can tell does it all, from the ships computer. I will have to dbl check about the ALT, but i would assume the mag var is fine since its a stored heading... but again will have to check.
Question: what about the magnetic variance? Is that entered also?
So basically we got an alignment INS simulator! - cant wait to spend most of my time in standby just for the INS to align...
@Jeff Clark So basically just because I posted the INS on the F14 is really slow, and everyone was saying so because people where anxious and comparing it to other INS aligments which took way less... means that I dont like to learn how the plane works and need explaining of what a sim is, LOL. Thanks man I feel educated by you after flying the F14 for a year.
@Jeff Clark snarky?! lol.. well if you put it like that then I guess you tried to be a smart ass by saying "Some people do like to learn how the plane works" - assuming of course that because I had said INS sim cause of the time it took to wait for it instead of being in the air that I just AUTO Start the plane and fly F15s or something. You like to patronize also dont you "J.s a year later turns out you were wrong" not really sure what I was wrong about, but truly I dont care/// Yes you can accelerate and all that, but I dont play single player, mostly MP. If you are in an F18 you can get in the air and align in less than 4min. At the time people where ansy to fly the F14 as I said, so not really sure really where you are going with this... and yeah Heatblur with the F14 probably made the best SIM module of DCS and probably any flying sim platform out there, period. You took one comment a year a go, and made it a big deal! Being in quarantine is affecting you brah ;)

Is the stored heading alignment something you'll have to setup in the mission editor, or is it by standard available?

Has the carrier alignment procedure changed? I'm trying it now and can never get it to work. Got my Datalink on, in CAINS mode, I think tuned to the carriers frequency (it's 302.40 mhz), so my dial reads 024 (with the 3 being painted on and I guess the trailing 0 missing?). Switch to CVA ALIGN and I don't see any confirmation. CAP doesn't swap to Stored Heading Align, and I don't see the text on the TID either. Any clues?
edit: Ah nevermind! Problem was I hadn't checked "Alignment Stored" in the mission editor. All good now.

AFAIK during an alert 5 they would stand 2 jets up on cats hot and ready to go, but someone who actually served might know more or be able to correct me...

i'm struggling with the logic of a saved heading alignment on a moving object. when and where and HOW does this work?
Well, an INS has many things to derive : the easiest are movement vectors (acceleration and speed) because they are only platform dependant and since you should be still (or in the case of the CV they're given by the CAINS DL), the hardest are heading and altitude wich must be derived from the earth rotation given your position and altitude. A you see, the full 8 minutes alignment is mostly for the INS to : 1 stabilize itself (1st carret), and then further out refine it's measurements to find a heading. So if you parked your aircaft in a heading relative to the carrier, I guess they did find a way to decrease alignment time by using the CAINS to integrate the base platform movement and then use the relative bearing to calculate true heading. Just guessing though.

Step 1/Tick 1: Bring gyroscopes up to speed, level the navigation platform, and zero out accelerometer readings (GND)/match them to the carrier's movement (CVA). Minimum necessary alignment to provide coarse attitude info (mostly pitch and roll) and positioning (expect lots of drift, though).
Step 2/Tick 2: Use the gyro drift to determine Earth's rotation angle relative to the platform, using that to determine precise true heading. Provides accurate 3-axis pointing necessary for RADAR missile guidance/precision RADAR pointing, less accumulated drift rate in flight. By using a pre-stored heading, the direction sensing has a good starting point to rapidly converge on alignment, rather than determining heading from scratch.
Step 3/Tick 3: Further refinement of gyro leveling, maximum possible pointing accuracy, minimum position drift rate.

I guess it's possible to control the walkman back there, just convert the Danger Zone to ogg and put it in the appropriate folder, just like it's done in the Viggen already.

Do I do this by swapping seats if i'm the driver some how or does jester ai do this for me? Is there a tutorial? maybe with the zone 5 dlc? Man I wanna get the tomcat so bad.
So we can start the alignment process before entering the LAT/LONG/ALT coordinates ? That's surprising.
I just RTFM and found that RIO has approx 90 sec to enter the coordinates during ALN. Cool, it saves time :)
Yup that was the point of the video as always :) I did fail to mention this point but basically you have to do it before the first tick mark

I don’t like the fact that when I installed the f-14 that my f-18 hornet cold and dark start on the carrier is missing only on ground is available, did anyone else have this problem that the f-18 on the carrier went missing? Thanks
Never seen it, files are completely separate and should have no changes module to module
When I first launched the F-14 and the Fear the Bones campaign, I started on the supercarrier with a full animated crew.
Since then i reformatted my PC a few times and when i tried it again, my F-14 was hot and in the air plus I couldn't do any supercarrier training missions (understandable).
So yeah I've had the same glitch, but only once.
You can't use the supercarrier if you don't have the module installed... Or rather.. you shouldn't be able to lol.
Also, you should be able to practice carrier ops even without supercarrier module since there are carriers in the asset list.
Go into mission editor and try setting it up
The Data Link Mode keep flipping back downward instaed go to CAINS, can anyone tell me why?
