I have completed many thru hikes and have never hung my food except the shelters where they had hangers. On the PCT and the CDT in most places there is nowhere to hang your food and mice are more of a threat than bears.
A few days ago we were talking in the comments about protein bars and I had never heard of Barebell's, I had to stop and grab something for my son at the grocery so I wandered on down the snacks aisle and not only did they have them!! They were on sale! 2 for 4, is that a good price? I bought one of each flavor. We shared the peanut one, good so far!
I still enjoy your videos so much. Sometimes I even want to be out there! I do have 2 questions. I know it's none of our business, but since you brought it up, what is Chuck's job? If it's too personal or embarrassing, we can all understand not divulging this information. Ha ha, this was intended as humor. Ha. Also, I don't really remember people's pack videos mentioning bear bags and rope and whatever else you might need to bring to hang a bag. If you could talk about the science of bear bag hanging in a video, you'll have at least one appreciative audience member. And maybe if you want to see a bear, you should sleep with your food in your tent! More humor. Ha ha.

I wonder if the man killing it is doing any filming. I live watching & appreciate how much effort goes into the process because it is a sacrifice y’all do. I
Do what ya got to do. I'm not telling you not to hang it. But over 24 years of backpacking I have found throwing it over a tree after a long hike is exhausting and frustrating. I have my system . My radar goes up if I think there maybe a problem. I have yet to see a bear in 24 years. Have they seen me? I'm guessing that would be a Yes. But I'm not sloppy with my food .I cold cook most of the time.. Mice are my biggest problem. That and blisters. Do I sleep with my food ? YEP...On recent hike I pulled into a sweet spot. A Shelter with a creek and a bear pole. Did I hang my food...NOPE..Why ? because there was a huge black lab there. Bears hate Dogs. If you have watched Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio) then I am sure you will always hang your food.

Chuck is still technically active duty coast guard for about a month or so then he’ll be working as a GS (doing similar stuff) after the trail!
