This book does look intimidating but it was selected as a book club read and I'm so glad I read it. Other books that have generational attributes are homegoing and pachinko. All very very good!

You are eloquent and talented. Thank you for this review. The Black-American experience is not mine. Your reading signals that yes, you can and I hope you will go on to grad school. Keep up this much needed and amazing work. Thank you again.

I just recently stumbled upon this video and I loved how this book impacted you this way. I found that to be so beautiful. You know a book is good when it makes you want to actively look for more. Im going to add this to my list of books to get to.

Loved your video! Loved this book sooo much. The family history was deeply rich. Root, Lydia, Agee, Ailey live in my heart forever! HFJ is a genius and as long as this book is, I can’t wait to reread it.
One thing and I mean no disrespect! , academia has its bad experiences but it should be noted HFJ comes from higher education, her mother is a professor. Don’t let the fear of racism block an opportunity racism is everywhere, but education isn’t.

I have not read Love Songs yet, but from what you're saying it sounds like you'd like Morgan Jerkins' Wandering In Strange Lands. She traces both sides of her family in it and also breaks down the historical essence of the complexities of blackness/race that have been passed down generationally within families. I really enjoyed it

This one sounds great, added to my tbr! Idk if you've read it but Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi was the book that started me thinking about my family history, it was so inspiring and is so close to my heart 🤎
