2023 N.E.O. Voice Festival Concerts

This weekend kicks off the fourth annual N.E.O. Voice Festival at @1stchurchla! The eight day festival includes three performances open to the public:
SATURDAY, JUNE 24 at 7 PM: The Festival kicks off with OUT OF THE (VOICE) BOX, a chamber voice concert featuring performances by N.E.O. Voice Festival Scholars and Fellows, emerging and mid-career artists who lead voice sections during the week, as well as faculty and special guests. The concert will feature vocal and piano improvisation, music for voice and electronics, and works by John Corigliano, Joni Mitchell, Diana Syrse, and John Dowland, among others.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28 at 7PM: IMMERSIVE STIMMUNG will be an immersive re-interpretation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Stimmung performed by the vocal ensemble HEX. This performance of Stimmung is reimagined with expanded ritualistic and theatrical elements, as well as new layers of live electronics. In addition, participants are invited to be a part of the work: those who wish to participate can attend a 45 minute workshop immediately before the performance, beginning at 6pm, to learn the core elements of the piece and how they will be guided through the score during the performance. Audience members are also welcome to simply attend and listen.

SATURDAY, JULY 1 at PM: the Festival ends with RECURRENCE, this year’s “Exploratorio” composed and performed by N.E.O. Voice Festival participants. An oratorio on the nature of recurrence, reincarnation, and dejá vu, each movement of the “Exploratorio” is composed by a different composer and explores these themes through eclectic and distinct means, including aleatoric musical games, star chart vocal puzzles, overtone singing through megaphones, and music written for the Great Organs at FCCLA.

All concerts take place at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, a thriving hub for new music in Koreatown that regularly premieres new works.
