  • This Poitras is a well designed and well made large bandsaw. Some features are unique to this saw, I have never seen them on other machine. We turn on each machine and let you hear them run. Enjoy

Kind of to my surprise, I’m really enjoying these videos. It’s like we’re in your shop with you, and I’ve learned more about my own bandsaw. I inherited it and it’s great to have one finally, but I didn’t know much about it besides how to use. These will help me to maintain it for longer and I ask that you keep these “in depth, shop tour, tool showcases” coming.

These machines remind me of my high school woodshop back in the mid seventies. If I remember right we had mostly General machines. Thanks for the videos.

The bandsaw is an essential machine to have. It can operate as a table saw as well. AND it has re-saw capabilities

This is a great series whether it is being done to keep those occupied that are in quarantine, or as a stand alone series. I've been in quarantine since 2013 after having neck surgery where the results prevent me from driving, so I only get out on the weekend when my wife is home, or the rare evening that we need to go somewhere. That;s when I stepped up my game with woodworking, it keeps me sane and occupied, but when I don't have something that I need, I have to figure other ways to keep my sanity. Enter TH-cam and all the great woodworking creators like you Rob that I subscribe to and watch every day.
As a lifelong automotive technician, I would call the style of adjustment for the guide bar a rack and pinion, but that's just my opinion.

Hello Rob.. Big fan here. I need an advice. I am considering a used Italian Centauro bandsaw. What are the things that I need to consider when I check the bandsaw? For example what is the easiest way to check if the wheels are true and how powerful the motor is, etc. Thanks in advance

I'm really enjoying these videos. One question is: how do you get these giant, heavy machines into your shop? And how do you move them around if you rearrange the shop?

Excellent set of videos. I assume the big machines, use 220v vs. 110? Thanks

A Wixey Digital Tilt Box would be more accurate than relying on the tilt gauge for the table...don't you think, since the Poitras doesn't have one.

    I am guessing that is a 3 phase 220 ?

Price and availability will vary a whole lot depending on where you are. I live in the central Massachusetts area in the US, and there’s not much of a shortage of options for used equipment be it steel framed 20” saws or “old iron” saws of all sizes. I scout the internet selling platforms for equipment very often and have had very good luck personally. For reference, I paid $600 for a 20” Delta (3 phase, so add $150 for a VFD to run on in single phase). Recently picked up a well restored walker turner 14” for $300. The WT is definitely an outlier price wise. The gent who sold it to me bought it from the person who restored it, and just wanted to let it go before a house move/wasn’t very emotionally invested in it.
I looked at a 32” northfield in great condition that was for sale for $1200. I’ve seen other northfield saws and equivalent in my area for 1,000-2,000 depending on size and condition. I’ve also seen people asking $900 for 14” deltas, $2000 for 17” jets etc etc. if you’re not in a rush and willing/wanting to do some work to an older saw, keep an eye on your local markets (Facebook, Craigslist, OfferUp etc).

Does there exist a dealer of old, large bandsaws? I know of one website, vintagemachines or some such name, but just curious if there are others that anyone knows of.

Many of the new composite stones when cut create a dust that many people who working with it are developing Silicosis which seems to be more problematic than Mesothelioma from asbestos. Please do some research on this.

Do you have any recommended aftermarket suppliers, or places for old equipment parts. I've always hesitated on old equipment for parts reasons.

None to pass on, i have had to get stuff made or made it myself. For the most part, belts, bearings and motors are what goes, all easily replaced from "off the shelf".

Could you not take the wheels to a car tyre shop to get them balanced?

what I don't understand about American stile bandsaws is why they are soo small. Here in Europe a 45/50cm bandsaw are common but you name it "beast"

Rob measured the throat of the bandsaw in this vid at 22 inches. Thats 55cm, so is larger than your example! Unless you mean height which in the UK, i doubt is even available and I cant imagine why you'd need a bandsaw with 45/55 cm height!
