    I work in the manufacturing industry so we just deal with our customer service on a somewhat regular basis and it came to mind at the beginning of your video when you were trying to find the specs on a newer shoe and the aren’t really available yet a quick call to customer service would probably save you time compared to searching around the Internet. That’s just something that came to mind.

    I live in the hudson valley in New York. I'm lucky enough to have tons of great trails within 2 miles from my front door. So, a commuter trail shoe is a must in my rotation. I also work very close to the catskill mountains and can skip out of work for an hour and spend some quality time in our beautiful forests, then back to work. And thanks to you, I have the best tool for the job. The saucony mad river (version 1). It's just road friendly enough, while still being a very trail focused shoe, even on some of our most technical trails. I'm in love with the mad river, it's such a great shoe.

    First, I want to thank you for your videos and reviews and inspiration. Secondly, as feedback about Hoka's laces, they are thick and sticky. I like that. I believe you've shared that they don't make the lock down as easy as you would like. Personally, I find that, though they take a little more time, they really lock down well. Unlike plush round laces that can be quickly pulled up to cinch lock down, the Hoka laces are flat, stiff and sticky, especially if you allow them to remain untwisted as you tighten them. Normally, as you pull up laces to tighten them, there is some slippage with each pull. Not the case with Hoka laces. If you allow them to remain untwisted, there is no slippage as you progress up the shoe tightening them to create a snug lock down.

  • @barhrusl
    @barhrusl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To start, I love these shoes. I use these for light road and groomed trail running. I mainly use these for walking at a decent pace with a 30 lb pack. These shoes are great for that. Also, I like the lacing system. I’ve seen 2 videos where it was said the laces were too stiff. I actually prefer a stiff lace as it seems to lock my foot down much better. Oh, I also think the heel pocket secured my heel quite well. Haven’t slipped or felt weird at all. Great shoe!

    Hi Seth. Glad to see that Hoka did not give up the ATR challenger line. The 3's were fantastic shoes (the trail version of the Clifton 3, "commuting" from road to trail was indeed effortless ) but the durability of the upper was a real issue (the midsole was fairly durable). I hope that the quality of the upper improved. Not to recommend for too technical terrains though and a price point that start to be a bit steep (but that means the 5's will retail for less).

    I got the Challenger 6 a few months ago and so far find them ideal for my situation. I run a lot locally from my house along a riverbank which is a mixture of surfaced footpaths and forrest trails so needed something that was good for both. I also need a wide fit and so went for the wide version of the shoe which has proved ideal for me. I have a pair of Salomon XA Pro 3D which I use for the mountains where I want more protection, and I agree with your assessment that the Challenger 6 ATR is ideal for "commuter" and foothills. 👍

  • @mattpotter8725
    @mattpotter8725 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have used the Challenger ATR 4 and am currently using the ATR 5 and I tend to use these when going between a mixture of tarmac, gravel trails, and maybe a little dirt, though where I live there aren't high mountains so I don't really need that. What I would say though is that when running in more urban environments, especially when it's a bit wet and slippy you just don't get the grip I'd expect, not at first out of the box anyway. I would say it improves with mileage, maybe as the soles get a bit more scuffed, but I was surprised at this as I thought there would be more grip then there was on cold out wet hard surfaces. ATR stands for All Terrain (not sure what the R stands for, runner maybe, only just learnt this) so this is a shoe that is very useful if you run from an urban environment out to trails or at least more off road environments, but this isn't a trail shoe. If you want a trail shoe Hoka has other better options for that, but as you say if you're running in those on the roads you might feel the sole posing through and causing some discomfort. As I said earlier I had the Challenger ATR 4, my first Hoka's and have not too long ago got a pair of the ATR 5s so that tells you all you need to know about my experience in this shoe, and at some stage I'll be getting a pair of these. I did around 1,000km in the ATR 4s, before a split between the sole and the upper, which I have heard can be a problem, although on another review I heard this might be less so in the ATR 6s. Great review though, really interesting to get your thoughts on this shoe Seth. As far as the laces to you can just replace them I'd guess? Although it's not great that you would have to do this on a shoe I would think. I think they might be like this because a lot of the shoe is made from recycled materials I've also heard, which is something I think Hoka are pushing now.

    Love my 5s. If the toe box is bigger on the 6s then I’ll rent out the extra space! They just don’t feel hard on tarmac for example which is priceless for a trail shoe. But flat lugs so no good in muddy mud!

  • @davidgross7972
    @davidgross7972 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    QD: I have the ATR 5 and do use it as a commuter shoe regularly. I live just 1 km from a major trail system so when I decide to do a trail run, I run on pavement for 1 km, then on a buffed-out rail trail for a few km and end up on a forest trail full of rocks and roots and hills. This is all within 5km from my house and in the middle of a medium-size city so it is great! I like the ATR 5 for training runs but have not ran a trail race in them yet. Even though I have the wide version, i still find the toebox a little tight, so I hope the 6 would be better for me. I have also used them as a winter training shoe on streets and sidewalks but they are quite open to water so your feet can get wet and the traction is not great in fresh snow because of the blocky tread.

    QD: I commute every run basically every run here in Boise. Its about a half mile to get to the neighborhood trailhead for some light trail running. Normally I don't need a trail shoe but 2 of the climbs are rockier and could use some protection. The actual foothills are closer to 2-3 miles away, and I prefer driving to those. Also those Challengers are on my list for daily trail trainer and I've been loving the Clifton for most of my miles.

    Very interessting video. I am looking exactly for a shoe within this category. I am not running trails in the mountains. I would like to run mostly on mixed surface (I had knee issues and got advised to reduce trainings on pavement), so like partly road, partly not technical paths in the forest. There are currently not much shoes out there that are covering exactly this scenario. And i believe there are lots of runners who want to reduce miles on pavement and mix it with light "trails". This is just exactly what my close environment looks like (no mountains near by).

    • @mikewilson0
      @mikewilson0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you considered separate shoes for each of those runs? They really require different shoes and my understanding is that you want the shoe foam to have enough time to decompress after your tempo run, but that’ll require more than a day.

    • @texasmh4973
      @texasmh4973 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Wilson - Yeah, I do wear separate shoes for the different runs. Either Saucony endorphin speeds or adidas SL20s for tempo interval runs (SL20s today) and also have Salomon Supercross Trail shoes. The Supercross Trails are good for more aggressive terrain, but looking for less aggressive lugs, less weight and more cushion for my EZ recovery trail runs. My wife will be so excited that I’m looking to get “another” pair of running shoes

    A dry dirt road is pretty similar to a tarseal road in terms of impact in my opinion. I have the ATR 5 and they're great except not so breathable and look pretty ugly. I will get the 6 for cosmetic reasons but if its noticeably heavier I'll go back to feeling cheap with the 5s

  • @MrJeoffroi1
    @MrJeoffroi1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have a local ultra racing course (50K and 50 miler) that has about 2 miles of every 6.2 mile lap that's on a hard surface, and given how hard/dry our trails can be much of the year, I find the Challenger ATR 5 to be perfect for that transition between surfaces. If it were to be wet, I'd go with the Torrent 2. For technical trails, hard rock, big hills where I need grip (especially in muddy or wet conditions), I go with the Speedgoat. There's definitely a niche for the Challenger ATR, and 14ers isn't it.

    Hi there DGR runners. I've had this version for almost 2 years now and they are a disapointment. It took at least 50/60 km to break off and before that they did hurt pretty bad...then there was a sweat spot in confort for 100 km and after that they started to give quite a lot. I'm swimming around the toe box as well now and i cannot fit the laces so that they would fit proper. I now have put 300 km into them, and i use them to walk around as they are not able to be my trail runners anymore. Boring as I was just in love with my previous Challenger ATR3 that died too soon ! I swapped laces between the 3 and the 6 and now I can fit them 6s to.my feet. And after this mileage the outsole is pretty worn out now....I will not by this model anymore even for commuting and will rather consider speed goats for replacement.....

    The challenger is probably my favorite shoe. Currently running on the ATR 5. Perfect for ultra's (ran the national championships of my country on them). I find them far better than for example the Speedgoat, which is more aggressive. But I demolish the outsole within weeks.
    My daily run is about 10 miles (15k)
    1 mile on pavement
    4 miles through the woods
    5 miles over sand
    No steep climbs... lots of small hills in the woods though. My biggest obstacles are probably the thousands of tree roots. And when wet, the challenger holds pretty good. Harder outsoles tend to slide.
    They are a bit on the heavy side and the ground feel could be better. Something that was awesome on the discontinued Speed Instinct.
    I can recommend the shoe for long races and daily training. Short races probably not. I don't have special shoes for speed runs. Don't see the benefit of them.

    Really like the idea of these for the winter in the UK when it’s wet and muddy, but after the Rincon I’m concerned with Hoka that they just go flat and end up battered too quick

    I'm running usually on gravel, so I think this shoes shoul be for me, bo I'm wondering if they are suitable for running maratfon on asphalt, city road for time to time without buying additional, dedicated shoes? What do you think? Is Challenger could be good also for asphalt?

    Lacing is also a problem on the Clifton 6. Laces are too wide for the eyelets.

    I run in a country park near where I live and there's a combination of grass, mud and gravel. Is this designed for that or mainly for road and gravel?

    QD: Most of my runs where I want to run on the roads are reverse commutes. I live on trails and need to run through trails to get to the roads. I have the ATR5 and the Stinson 5. The ATR5 is ok but the Stinson 5 is too big, high and heavy. I'm looking for something a bit more responsive for tempo days on the roads that will make it through the trails.

    On my 13 mile run around our lake in Wisconsin....I run pavement, dirt road, ice age trail and back to pavement.

    Hey Seth, would you recommend these for an east coast 100 miler? Not too technical trails, but lots of water crossings??

    I love the Challenger 3s, but who actually cares about the shoes with a views like that? Stunning.
    Don't commute, but have several regular local routes that go pavement > trail > pavement.

    As winter is approaching, could you do a vlog on winter gear? Specifically running tights?

    I commute urban to trail most days, I have the ATR5 and found that my foot slips around a little bit too much. they especially dont work t=with Injinji socks....oh no, not a good mix. I prefer my inov8 park claw 275`s.

    QD: I do actually commute to buffed out trails. What I’m looking for now is a winter shoe to run on snow, ice, mud, on these trails.

    QD: actually almost all of my runs are a mixture of easy trail and road. So far, I've used road running shoes for that. Maybe I'll try a commuter shoe some time

    My first trail shoe was a Challenger, 100k in I had bad delamination, OK maybe I got a lemon pair? Hoka gave me a new pair and same thing, delamination at 100k so I upgraded to the Speedgoats and got a 1000km out of them bad boys and lots of black nails 😂

    I recently bought the speedgoat. Same problem with the laces. I had to change them. When I pulled them tight it only tightened the the last loop hole. Weird.

    I’m just getting into Hoka and got a pair of Clifton 6s which I love. Wanting a trail shoe from hoka that’s similar. Would this one be closer or would the speedgoat be closer?

    Hi Seth. Would you recommend this shoe for a dirt/gravel park service road that connects to few sections of paved roads? I normally run this in the Speedgoat 3, but wonder if this shoe would be a better fit.
