Oh this is good! Im now teaching a 17 year old couple, boy and girl. Im so glad they were inspired to learn. I sell jean bags and remade shirts etc. at a tiny market in a town of 2,000. Motst jobs here are retail part time for the tourist industry. In only 2 lessons they are catching on fast. Introducing them to the sewing machine first. I was looking for a very simple bag tutorial to not confuse them with extra details. This one will help!
Thanks Christine. Following your lead I approached the local upholster. And then I came back to see what I could make and up came this pattern. I got my machines back from their service and wow this was the easiest bag I've attempted. Thank you again
Thanks sew much Christine! will be making a batch of these to use instead of Christmas wrapping! An extra gift with the gift! Your instructions are so clear and simple to follow. Thanks again.
Thank you for such clear instruction and those time saving tips. You cleared up the whole sewing an X for the handle thing and also how to do teh box corners, things which always tripped me up a bit. I look forward to seeing more of your videos, Christine.
Hello Christine. I really like how you triple sew the handles. I normally do the cross stitching but I will be trying your technique. In my opinion it looks a lot cleaner. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Love how you create these Market Bags! I see several in my future. Thinking about making some with Twill Canvas and adding a quick vintage embroidery on the front. Could be nice Xmas pressies for my lovely neighbors. Going to rewatch your batch sewing video for some tips. Thanks!
Very nice. I always learn something from your videos. I've had an overlock for many years. And have not made anything with it, yet. You are an inspiration! I've been collecting fabrics from yard sales, thrift stores, family, friends, etc. for awhile. I now have enough to begin my shopping bag journey. As always, thank you for sharing.
Great video, and lots of really good tips. I believe I'm going to watch your other videos and see how you mass produce them. Love to listen to your accent. I'm in the center of the U.S. We sound like country bumpkins here! LOL Thanks again.
Oh, your videos are just what I've been looking for! I just acquired almost a hundred pieces of new upholstery fabrics and want to make something useful from them. Your directions are perfect for me and I already have the webbing. You made it 'sew' easy! Also, I subscribed to all your videos because I don't want to miss a one of them. I wish I could work a nap into my busy schedule but I don't think my employer would allow it right now. I've been sewing for over fifty-seven years and hope to retire from my day job in a few months. That's when I'll do nothing but sew and nap all I want. 😄 Thanks, Brenda

Unfortunately I sewed the handles on on the wrong side of the fabric but rectified mistake and still looks fabulous. I’ll try and post on your Facebook Group to show finished bag. ❤
Such a brilliant simply explained video. Thank you for making and sharing how to make an easy shopping bag that has multiple uses that will last, Unlike the dreadful single use plastic bags ❤

Hi Christine love all your videos, long time watcher first time I’m going to make some bags. I just recently got some samples but they are more like a velvety texture do you use this type of sample? Also I have an overlocker but am usually scared of it as I have trouble threading it. Do you have any videos to show this? I also get a bit lost as I’m a patchworker for over 15 years and usually sew with quarter inch seams, I don’t know where to look if I’m not doing straight work, do you have any tips you could add to your videos. For example especially on an overlocker not sure where the seam is. I know how to use the guides on the sewing machine but you can’t always see the guide. Do you ever visit Melbourne? Let me know I can put you onto a few good places to shop for fabric. Also what measurements do you use for your differential feed for the overlocker with the thicker fabrics. Learnt the hard way about this when sewing thinner slippery fabric and machine chewed it up. Was left in that state ever since… Cheers Jodie
Hi Jodie. Yes, I visit mum in Cranbourne, and my boys in the west. Should be going in the next week or so. Differential feed depends on the fabric I'm sewing, but as most of it is woven fabric, I generally leave it where it was when I got it. If I need to change the feed, I'll test it out on scrap fabric of the same type, and make adjustments as needed. I do plan on some overlocker videos, but just haven't found the time yet. I'm also a patchworker for about 15 years (had a quilt store for some time). I'd use the velvety material the same way I use the upholstery fabric samples that I have, but would use some kind of stabiliser to help the bags sit up better.😀
Just a question, wouldn’t it be quicker to fold up the bottom of the bag instead of making the pointed corners to get a flat bottom?. Wouldn’t the results be pretty much the same. ( obviously I haven’t done this method, but I’ve watched several videos, so that make me an armchair expert🫣)
I think that is a quicker method Sandi, but not one I particularly like. I kind of like boxing my corners. I have a video coming up with that corner soon though😁
I did a lined version in this video. You can use the technique, and any of your measurements 😁 th-cam.com/video/0vWj1S9AqpQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wm5-xtxT_unfI1hD
Hi Christine, I am very new to sewing and I used to have a singer machine that actually had a built-in surgery and was amazing. I now have a juki that I love but it does not have a built-in serger nor do I have a serger. When you say you can use a zigzag stitch instead I’m a bit confused and embarrassed and feel dumb because this is probably a ridiculous question, but am I putting the front and the back pieces together and using the zigzag stitch to combine them or am I literally using a zigzag stitch to stop freeing or something else and juststitching each piece at a time? Is this too confusing lol.
Hi Stephanie. Never be afraid to ask questions, or think they're dumb. We've all been new to things at some stage in our lives, and we learn from asking questions and making mistakes. I make plenty. You don't have to serge the edges, but on your regular machine, you can just sew the seam as you normally would, and then, if you have a zigzag on your machine, go over those side seams again with a short but wide zig zag. This will help prevent edges from fraying. Hope this has helped😊
I recently received 2 totes of upholstery fabric. Some is vinyl. Do you think this could be used for the straps in lieu of the webbing? I'm concerned it will stretch or warp.
Sally, I'd probably use the same fabric for the handles instead. I've done vinyl handles befores, and some twist and stretch, but that would have been incorrect sewing too🤣

How much do you sell these??? Thank you
Jane, I usually sell them for $15 au 😀
If I use cotton quilting material, do I need to do anything to make it sturdier??
You could line them Linda, and also use a stabiliser if required😊
How much fabric did you use per bag? Same question for handles? Looks like your dimesions are a nice size! 😊
I used 45cm x 90cm for fabric and 1.10 mtr for handles
Ty soooo much!
My pleasure Margaret. Thank you🙂
Hi Christine, do you pre-wash your upholstery fabric before you make your bags? your videos are great, love your approach
Hi Stephanie. No, I don't prewash any fabric unless it's something to be worn or if it smells bad. The bags are washable though😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs that you so much for the super fast reply, really appreciate it! I am going to make a few tomorrow 🇨🇦
If I make those with Quilting Cotton, do I have to use interfacing and a liner?
It would be up to you Doris. They'd be very lightweight, but fine as is😀
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Thanks for the quick response
Christine,
Could you tell me what you use to display your headbands?
Is it cardstock, or??
Thanks in advance.
I used to use card stock Linda. I no longer make them though😀
Using this method and cotton, how would you add a lining?
I did a lined version in this video. You can use the technique, and any of your measurements 😁 th-cam.com/video/0vWj1S9AqpQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wm5-xtxT_unfI1hD
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I guess was trying not to make an extra bag. I think the one you called “mistake” may be what I want. Thanks.
I've done vinyl handles befores, and some twist and stretch, but that would have been incorrect sewing too🤣
Christine, Where do you get your personal labels from?
Bernadette, there are links in the description of all my videos for the labels😀
What type of needles do you use in your machine for upholstery material. Thanks
LJ, when using my domestic machines, I use universal 90/14, or jeans needles 100/16. On my industrial I usually use 110/18😀
Hi Christine, love these bags . May I ask where you buy your fabric?
Linda, I receive most of mine for free, as the warehouse was having a cleanout. In Australia, you can purchase it from Spotlight😁
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs thank you 😊

Hello how much do u sell your tote bags for ?
I sell them for $15 AU Anita😁
If one were to make bags out of cat or dog food bags…do you need the triangle at the bottom…?
You don't have to Velma, but I think they'll be more useful with the boxed corners.😁
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs will do the boxed corners…thank you so very much…!
