Love this. Thank you!
1. Read to self - independent choice book
2. Read to someone else, read out loud 10-20 minutes
3. Listening to reading - listening to an audiobook, parent or someone else read to child
4. Word work - grammar or spelling
5. Writing - 20 minutes, based on what child is reading. Journal about the book.
Yes! I love having a framework to guide me. Thank you!
This was really helpful! I love this idea of having an overall checklist of things to do each day. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, I'm so glad to hear it is helpful!! Thank you!
I use the daily 5 and didn't even know it was a thing. 😂 Thanks for sharing great literature. We have read many of those books. We are huge book fans over here. God bless ❤
Ha! Yes! I think it's the most natural thing, and I LOVED when I found resources to support it in elementary. Now it serves as a checklist for my planning. Thanks for watching and commenting:)
Love this daily five! We are using BJU for the first time grammar 3! I am excited about it!
It's so good!!! Yes, I saw that in your video and was so excited you're using it! I hope you love it as much as we do:)
20 minutes a day of writing? I think my daughter will revolt on Day 1. :) Totally agree that read alouds are for every age group!
LOL Oh no!! Well, that's okay:) Maybe 5 minutes, haha.
That’s what I was thinking too Jen! Lol 😂 But he reads infinitely more than what school children do. That’s what I love about Homeschool ❤
You are so right. I have to struggle daily with my son about writing practice.
Love the passion project idea!
Thank you! It's so fun and doesn't take any formal plans or anything. Even just a checklist of genres works:) And you can google or TH-cam any genre you aren't sure about. It's so much fun for any age!
I always enjoy your videos. I totally like the daily 5 idea. We pretty much incorporate it as well but didn’t know there is a term for it. Just subscribed!
I just found your channel through this collab and I love it! You are so perfect for this!! I'm glad you are making videos:) And thank you!! Isn't it funny how we sometimes naturally do things that we didn't even know were a "thing?" Thank you for your comment and for watching:)
This was very helpful as I plan for 7th grade!
Wonderful! I am so glad!
😊
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for explaining the daily 5!
Thanks for watching! And you're welcome!
Oh my goodness, I loved using Daily 5 when I taught kindergarten.
Yes! I used it in 3rd grade! Then I started teaching 7th and thought, WOW, it still applies, hehe:) Such a great framework.
Thanks for sharing all your ideas. You’re wonderful! What’s your thoughts on adding in a focused vocabulary component? I keep going back and forth on if it is a necessary component for my daughter’s middle school years. 😬
Hi! Thank you!! I go back and forth about vocabulary, too...We learn good vocabulary from reading high quality writing over and over again and then using what we've learned over and over again. I know that "vocabulary words" are focused on when kids are younger, but I personally think middle school students should read books, write down the words they don't know, define them, and USE them several times in writing and in conversation. But sets of "vocabulary words" just don't seem to stick. What are your thoughts?
@@LoveThemWell I feel the same way about just reading good literature. As I read aloud to my kiddos, I will stop and ask them, "What does that word mean?" If they don't know it, then, I will help them define it. Thanks for your reply. :)
I hadn't heard of daily five, thank you for explaining
Oh good!! You're welcome!
I am new to middle school. Can anyone suggest reading material for this age group? I am coming from Kindergarten, so I'm not sure what the children of this age group are interested in.
Hello! Yes! This age is so challenging because some are ready to read more advanced books, but they're not always appropriate. My friend and I just made a video with some suggestions! I hope you find it helpful! th-cam.com/video/r44IdF4NCDI/w-d-xo.html
Did y’all use BJU writing and grammar for the entire year? I keep reading that it’s a semester long course.
Yes, it has taken us the whole year and we aren't going to finish. But if we had more time, maybe we could do it in a semester? We have class about 3 times a week and spend about 20 minutes on it.
@@LoveThemWell that’s good to know since the website says it’s a 1/2 year course. I went ahead and purchased it. Eager to try it.
This was helpful. Do you have any booklets or information on how to teach literary analysis?
Oh I do!! I found some good resources on Teachers Pay Teachers. I'll make a separate video about that, because it's been really helpful! Thanks for asking!! Essentially we want students to be able to read a book and formally analyze what the author is trying to convey. In 7th grade, we start this by picking out good quotes from the book, choosing one that best suits the theme of the book, and writing why. I'll try to find my favorite resource and link it.
@@LoveThemWell Love this!! I am entering middle school literature and need HELP 😊. Looking forward to the video and links ❤️.
Are you tutoring one on one. I’m looking for my 7th grader
I do not at this time:)
Don't you need the teacher's guide for the answers?
Maybe if grammar isn't your thing. But you can if you need it!
