I was having the same problem as you describe with pencils, but for me, it was pens. I asked the student who always borrows pens for me and always forgets to give them back what he thought a good idea was so I could make sure I didn’t have to keep buying new pens. He said I should charge a dollar, and I told him I didn’t think that was gonna work. He suggested that I swap things. So for the end of last year every time someone borrowed a pen they had to leave some thing with me. They wouldn’t wanna leave in the classroom. I had backpacks laptops and water bottles all exchanged to borrow a pen. I never lost another pen after that.

Yes! This reminds me of a teacher in high school that made us leave a shoe to borrow a pencil...Hmmm...I might do this.
