Mechwarrior 2 Playthrough: Clan Wolf (Complete)

  • The complete Clan Wolf campaign from the classic sim game Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat. I cleaned it up a bit, also, where some spots were out of audio-sync.
Plug in your neurohelmet and strap yourself into a one-hundred ton massive war machine in Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, a mech-driving simulator from Activision (1995)!
Bitter combat rages across dozens of worlds throughout the Jade Falcon occupation zone. Against the backdrop of the Refusal War, you start as a lowly cadet in either Clan Jade Falcon or Clan Wolf as they battle for what may very well decide the future of not just the invading clans, but the entire Inner Sphere. Will you rise from the ranks through tactical prowess and victory in arena-style Trials of Position to become Khan of your clan, or will you simply be another name in the long line of fallen warriors?
Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat gave its players numerous play options, with 32 missions (16 per side) as well as a nearly-infite number of Trial of Grievance 'instant action' missions to jump straight into combat. Mechwarrior 2 has 15 different pilotable chassis, from the weak yet fast Firemoth, through the iconic Timberwolf, up to the 100-ton Dire Wolf behemoth, and all fully customizable to (nearly) the Battletech rules. It also allows you to bring up to two additional computer-controlled starmates to assist you on your objectives, leading to many possible strategies for each mission.
This sequel to the fondly-remembered but otherwise unremarkable 1989 game Mechwarrior, Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat can arguably be credited with helping to thrust Battletech, and giant-mech combat games, truly back into the limelight. With controls more similar to that of contemporary flight sims, Mechwarrior 2 successfully melded exciting action with an intricate setting, diverse missions, beautiful front-end graphics, and an attention to detail into one of the best presentations of the late DOS age. Mechwarrior 2 led to one expansion (Ghost Bear's Legacy) and a stand-alone semi-sequel (Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries), and the series still continues, with an all-new game simply entitled Mechwarrior to be released soon. To this day, Mechwarrior 2 is still played in multiplayer by its many fans.
    Normal difficulty.
    Add &fmt=18 for high quality.

Mailman2310 At least you tried. I believe you had one cool grandfather. My grandfather was always
busy with Mowing the Back Lawn, or things in his office. I had to find ways to keep myself occupied for fun.
Don't get me wrong though we both did. When I was a young boy, he was fond of me. He'd always smile
real big and say, "Come over 'ere,
and sit on your ol' Papaw's Lap." When Mom was there with us it kinda made her laugh. He'd even tell
me some Salty Jokes over the Phone. He first told me about a story about his involvement with the
Wampas Cat. He was telling me they all lived in an old cabin when he was little. Thunder was clapping
outside when they all started hearing something cluttering around in the Attic. Soon enough they
were hearing it again. And the Window was open. He said to them he heard something outside the
window. An older man in the family grinned and said, "How about taking a look out the Window?" Well,
when he did, he didn't see anything. But then something grabbed a tuft of his hair and like to pulled it
out. Anyways, Papaw pulled his head back in the Cabin and shut the Window as fast as he could.
He then said, "So, with that story told, do you know what a Wampas Cat is?" I was like, "Nah. What is
a Wampas Cat?" He said "Right now you're too young to know." I kinda thought he was pulling my leg.
He said, "Tell you what, I'll tell you sometime when you're older." I agreed. He eventually called mom and
talked with her a bit years later, he ended up wanting to talk to me after that. He asked me how old I was.
and I told him. And he said, "Remember I was gonna tell you what a Wampas Cat is?" And I was like
"Yep I remember." He said now that you're old enough, I'll tell you. You ready?" I said "Sure papaw."
      He said,
"It's a Black Cat with a White Ass!"
I heard his wife yell out "Bill, don't tell him that!" He was Laughing out loud.
      Boy I was also.
I also remember Mom was on the Phone with him. An outside Cat we tamed, and named Buster was
clawing up the Place Mat where we'd wipe the mud from our shoes. She said hold that thought a
second or two, the cat outside is sharpening his claws on the place mat." She yelled at the door,
"Buster! Quit that!" And her dad said when she put the Phone back to her face, Papaw said , "Listen, Listen!
Cat's a Pissin'!" Mom burst into laughter saying, "DAD!"
Gosh, Papaw was so funny! LOL!

This brings back so many memories! I can't remember which mission it was, but there was a very difficult one (one of the later missions, I guess) that I couldn't quite beat. I tried over and over. Finally, I played it and defeated all of the enemies and survived! Unfortunately, one of my legs had been blown off and I didn't have jump jets, this wouldn't have been a problem, but I had to reach an end point to complete the mission. In frustration, I swing my joystick back and forth a few times... I noticed that this caused the mech to lurch forward slightly. Excited, and with desperate hope, I continued to swing the joystick back and forth over and over again for about 20 minutes. I finally limped into the ending zone (whatever it was) and got the mission successful notification! I was so happy!
Seriously, this was a great game, possibly the best of the Battletech/Mechwarrior series that I've played. I think my favorite was the Timber Wolf, and I would customize its weapons to have a bunch of LRM-5s and some medium pulses. The lock-on feature of the LRMs in this game was spot on, and much better than later games (in which it was nearly impossible to get a lock). Ah, nostalgia!

    • @Garryl367
      @Garryl367 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The training officer's first lines of dialogue in the first training mission are filled with contractions: "No you _wouldn't_ even think of upsetting me in my home, would you? Of course you _wouldn't_ . So do what I say when I say and I _won't_ get upset. I do bad things when _I'm_ upset." However, after that, the contractions completely disappear. I can only assume this is an intentional act of disrespect to put the complete neophyte who probably thinks himself some fancy ristar in his place. (Or just the script messed up, but I think my take is more fun.)

It depends on the version you had. This looks like the DOS version which had flat shaded graphics but a fairly impressive dynamic lighting engine. The Windows version had texture mapped graphics with a simplified dynamic lighting engine.

I had the "Rage" Edition and it looked different than this too. The shading on the objects was much better. The game came with a new PC my Dad bought which featured an ATI Rage 3D Accelerator chip.

The visual coordinator for the intros and menus for this game really did an amazing job. The game could only look so good, but all of those menu visuals really let you know WHAT you are actually supposed to be piloting. Cheers!

Although, I played some missions that were so difficult that I didn't escape, sometimes. The
controls were also different in the PlayStation Format, with 8 different Settings in the Controls.
I always had to pick Setting 7 to at least activate the Torso Twist, Jump Jets, and make it easier
to pilot whatever Mech I chose to enter Battle.

@@L1011Widebody Out of curiosity, do you have a Favorite Soundtrack in Mechwarrior 2 : 31st century combat?
      My favorite is "Pyre Light."

    • @L1011Widebody
      @L1011Widebody  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Oh gosh do I have to choose? I admit Pyre Light has a special place in my heart because it's the first mission song, the one that brings me right back to my childhood immediately... Arkham Bridge is a really rocking song, with all the intensity and urgency of the strings playing into that mission. The soundtrack was just done so very well and really showed the love and care the developers had for the lore, and the setting, and making things feel great. Iron Piston is definitely a standout track, it is like the Kashmir (Led Zeppelin) of MechWarrior, it's got a great heavy metal feel to it without using the traditional heavy metal instruments.
But if I had to pick one favorite, it would definitely absolutely be Armor Veil. It's a fantastic track, the snare conveys that sense of military urgency, but the minor key strings really project a feeling of loneliness, that you are out there in the cold snowy blizzard with no one else to depend on. The horns are an excellent touch, it gives it a real feel of a long, grueling, arduous journey. The feeling of a long, arduous hunt, the wolf tracking his prey through the cold, the snowy elements, steadfastly for hours. The symphony crashes are perfectly timed, hinting that at any time you might encounter an enemy, waiting to attack you. The part about 1:10 brings to mind the battle of man against nature, you can really imagine it playing over a movie scene of a sled-dog team struggling to bring those desperately needed medical supplies to that lonely outpost before the people die. The long sweeping strings really encapture the feeling of a long and brutal endeavor. The strings shift to a more urgent tone at 1:37, suggesting you are almost there, that you are just about to save the day, just a bit further. When the backing instruments withdraw at 1:49, it gives that glimmer of hope, that this is the last hill we have to climb, that there really is only one more trial to endure. And the resulting buildup, the striking, heavy percussion, just conjures the image of the weary trooper, the tired ranger, collapsing from exhaustion at the doorstep of the cabin. Finally, now, he is able to rest, sure that he has done his job and saved everything. It's really just a fantastic track, I think I said that already?

    • @foxandwolffriend9359
      @foxandwolffriend9359 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@L1011Widebody I think you're right. It's all suspenseful until the mission is a success. This
would be why it's so exciting. So, I'll say my other favorites... Cold Crescent because of the "Hit and Run Tactic"
needed to Destroy the Main Terraformer Unit Core, and get out before the Temperature Spike is Detected,
and the blast takes you with it. Velvet Hammer, being an Offensive Tactic to Protect Josel Fetlandral, the Aide de Camp while his Hover Limousine heads to the Opera Plex. Pyre Light, Since it's like an Arid Desert with Sandstorms. It may explain why the Wolf's Dragoons' mission was Scrubbed before they could go in and destroy the Fuel Pumping Station.

Maybe my favorite Mechwarrior. Mechwarrior 4 was also a lot of fun because I figured out that with the hardpoint system in place of internal space, you could mount 3 LBX-AC20s in a Daishi. That mech remains the most powerful close range combatant that I've ever played. The usual issue in an assault mech of a light mech pecking away at you just stopped...watching an enemy Jenner just die was immensely satisfying.
