I stumbled across the Russian fella too and loved his idea so spent today making the device only to struggle with it too. I can now see its the way I'm mounting the bottle, thanks so much! Will make some amends and if it works will use to tie garden canes together for peas, beans etc

It's a bummer this video (and pt. 2) don't have more views. This stuff is very useful!

My latest efforts on TH-cam now - recycling plastic drink bottles into heat-shrink tape for use around the home and garden. Enjoy!

Good use for old bottles Jim, Shouldn't you protect the PET in some way to at least keep the UV off as it's designed to breakdown more easily in nature to combat all those bottles in land fills

101blog I thought it was the total opposite - PET is generally regarded as highly UV stable and will last outdoors unprotected for about 15 years before it's lost 25% of it's molecular weight. The do sometimes add UV blockers but I believe that is more to protect the colour of dyed plastics and the contents of the container than the PET material itself. Recycled PET bottles go on to make polyester fleece garments, carpets, sleeping bag linings and suchlike because the PET material is of such a high quality and is very reusable, hence it being number 1 in the triangle of recyclable plastics.

Dave Poole Yeah... I've known that for a long long time... Working in the world of IT has robbed me of my sanity :-).... There seems to be surprisingly few out there who see the valuable raw materials in old junk (but I do know at least a couple more loonies to keep me company in my insanity). - Cheers.

Where I live one pint of bottled water is $1 - $2. It's alot cheaper to buy twine than water.

Well done! Glad you pushed through the frustration and found a working solution. I have this picture of you running around your yard with PET string and a blowtorch looking for things to fasten. haha!

Ponic Wars Thanks... and yes... after I'd done the netting on the raised beds I'd run out of things which needed fastening, so wandering around the garden with a blowtorch was exactly what I was doing :)

Awesome! Great job and thank you for sharing. The people who make and sell shrink tape are probably less than happy with you ha-ha. You should make and sell the jig you made. I would buy it from you. A great green idea.

That was great. I'll have to show this to hubby.

Thanks Paula - It works great for lashing bits of cane/bamboo together in the garden when making frames for plants to grow up... Seems to hold up to the weather far better than using string. Cheers!!

Why didn't you just imitate the Russian's model? His was very simple and he didn't have to hold the bottle, and his machine could make tape of three different widths.

What's the thing called cutting it where do u get em from

You can solve the problem of the short stripes by adding a stick that goes through the bottle mouth keeping the whole bottle in place. You also won't need to hold it while using it.

Hi +Carlos Castillo Subiza - The contraption from the orginal video has a stick like that - I'll get around to adding one sooner or later, but I don't find it too difficult to use without... You just need to get the hang of it. Thanks for taking the time to comment - Hope you're having a good weekend. Cheers!!

+Jim Conner Hi Guys, I have been looking and also trying the Tape cutter thigymagig. Well After seeing a chap make the cuter out f a Pencil sharpener blade , I tried and , yes it works, I also refined it by having a PVC pipe standing upright and the blade horizontal, the pie held the bottle well. So you can walk and pull the tape, Oh BTW you get in the region of 20 m from a 2 lit bottle. I also plan to use it at home. Make a trellis and bind it with the tape. I have not ventured into making Video yet, but getting near to it though. Cheers and keep on trying all different things. Best of luck George.

Hi +George B. Firmin - I can certainly recommend the PET tape for trellises and other garden things... I have some bamboo frames for netting in the garden which I lashed together with PET tape, and they've stood up to the weather beautifully.... I also lashed together my latest hydroponic system using PET tape as nothing else was rigid enough for the job. Cheers!!

Thanks +shirley guerin - I highly recommend giving it a try. One of the best uses I've found for the PET heatshrink tape is reparing plastic garden tools... My wheelbarrow got a big split up the side recently when I dropped a huge lump of concrete into it... I drilled a row of holes down either side of the split and laced it up using the PET tape just like lacing up a shoe... One the tape got heat-shrunk the wheelbarrow is pretty much as good as new. The PET tape is ludicrously strong... In a different video (the follow on to this one) I lashed together a ladder using a 4mm strip of PET tape, and it happily managed to take my weight. It's a wonder material for sure. Cheers!!
