    Many thanks for this video, Rebecca! This is the first I've heard of Knomad, and I now plan to order from them. One thing that encourages me to order, as a "nervous novice" dyer, is that Knomad offers its retail bulk discount on a 10-skein pack rather than having to purchase, say, 20 skeins -- even at a discounted price per skein.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      There are also some sample packs that have a few single bases in them - I'm not sure what the discounts are on those.

    I'm just tying in ends on a summer sweater I made with knomad's stratus (80/20). The yarn took the colors beautifully (heavily saturated blood orange and yellow) and I have to say I used two hanks of yarn in my project one of which had been used and frogged three times before I started. There is no difference between the two in the finished project. I am super impressed by knomad.
    Also they have sales on a regular basis. I recommend everyone get on their mailing list for sale notification!

    Knomad has some very good sales up to 50% off which is a double savings when purchasing a pack. The first thing I look for in yarn is the sourcing. Local is best, but harder to find. I try to stay away from superwash because of the harsh chemicals used to strip it and lower performance as a wool product used over time. While Knomad has a lot of superwash, I like that they also offer yarn that is not. Softness is in the lineup, but not the deciding factor for me. Thank you for your video. Well done!

    I've only done some single-skein dyeing, and it's been many years since I last was able to, but I have ordered from Knomad for undyed yarns to have on hand! I love working with the occasional bare yarn, and I think they are a good resource given their wide range and accessible price per skein. I understand why dyers might not release their sources to the public, but I also wish I could get my hands on my favorite bases before they hit my favorite dyers. Thank you for this video, and for being open with this information!

    I've been learning a lot about yarn from your videos. This one was particularly educational. I was also pleased that you used some dye colors that I hadn't seen before. I think Baby Blue Eyes was the only one that wasn't new to me. The Pistachio was very elegant; I'd like to see what it would be like more saturated. And that Valentine Blush pink! So rich, but subtly muted; gives it an antique look.

    What Knomad offers and why I keep going back to them is super fast shipping, great customer service and monthly sales on select bases that take around 15-50% off the prices you mentioned. I do buy from other suppliers, of course but it irks me when I go to check out and the price is 20% or more than Knomad sales and I have to wait 2 weeks or longer.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      I was expecting to like the yarn (which I did) but then be disappointed by the prices. I was surprised to see the prices I saw on the website were just for individual skeins and there was such a big discount when you buy a pack - without any sitewide sales. I think prices are still within the range of things I see, some cheaper and some more expensive.

      A super fair critique. They mentioned to me that they're coming out with some new bases and some with finer merino (before they knew my thoughts on the yarn). The steam is super super soft.
      Last night I had my husband do a snowdrift/stroll and marshmallow/swish comparisons and he could tell the softness difference. I don't dislike them (I knit with WOTA all the time and these are softer than that!), but in terms of the bases I choose to dye, I'm going to be pickier.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Aran weight looks really "light" - closer to a worsted/light worsted.
    Is it actually an Aran weight, and having you swatched or knit with it to confirm that it works up @ an Aran gauge?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The yarn is technically listed as worsted/aran weight, I may have just said aran. There are 191 yards / 100 g, so yardage wise that designation works, but alpaca tends to be heavier than wool I think? I'm not sure. I haven't swatched it. There is swatch information on the website.

    Its difficult to compare prices by skein, when there were different yardage per skein. It would be better to campare the break as price per yard.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were two main price comparisons in the video. 1) the cost of Knomad's single skein or the price or each skein if you get a pack of 10. 2) comparison of the Swish/Marshmallow or Stroll/Snowdrift.
      1 - This was more to look at the price of an individual skein vs the bulk pricing per skein within one company. There are 30% savings for buying a 10 pack, a significant discount. Initially I thought Knomad's prices were all pretty high but when I looked closer the bulk pricing is very reasonable.
      2 - As for the Knomad/KnitPicks comparisons: Swish and Marshmallow have identical yardage. Stroll and Snowdrift are pretty close (within 6%). I thought it was interesting that single skeins from Knomad were more expensive than KnitPicks, but then when you considered bulk pricing the knomad yarn was cheaper. (Since ultimately the KnitPicks yarn probably has finer merino, this makes some sense.)
      Since pricing is typically by weight vs by yardage, looking at yarn with similar fiber content to compare prices is reasonable, in my opinion. Pricing my yard makes sense to me if you're paying someone to knit something, because more yards = more work.

    • @kj-sf4md

      @@ChemKnitsTutorials pricing by yard will also help determine actual total project cost, cause projects , in US, are usually stated in yardage.
