Wow, you are so lucky with your Lys. Mine wasn't anything like that, it was almost like he resented having more than one customer or them spending too much in the shop, and all the yarn was of big box stores. Great place for finding yarn of a company that had folded a few years ago... But his hidden location, pandemic and increasing running costs made him decide to retire last Christmas. Now there is a $ store equivalent selling a very limited selection of DK and occasionally aran basic acrylic with same colours rotating at random intervals. It is actually quite good quality but there is only so much I want to make with light peach or bright red and charcoal grey (the latter two colours are popular inschool uniforms).

Little Knits is also a great online store. As a Canadian, I've been searching for more companies based in Canada because some of the shipping fees to bring something across the border are outrageous! Once I purchased a shirt for $25, shipping was $20 but then I got nailed another $55.
Yes..I highly recommend Little Knits. Their prices and service are excellent! I've ordered from them several times, and they offer amazing yarn that I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise.

For discontinued yarns (and who hasn't played yarn chicken and lost, then searched fruitlessly for that same yarn with no results?)I have found Ebay sellers to be a real blessing. Many of the sellers are crocheters and knitters who bought too much, or lost interest in some yarns, and while the prices aren't always cheap, often the shipping is free, and being able to find the yarn in the exact color you need, well, it is just worth it.

Yarn Paradise/Ice Yarns is my go to when i buy in bulk since it’s a wholesale site. You can get 2-8 skeins of yarn per “lot” depending on the brand, type, weight, etc and most of their cotton and acrylics are suuuuper cheap but still awesome quality! Shipping is a lil pricey for US folks since it’s a brand based in Turkey i believe, but my orders almost always get here within 5-6 days 💜
Amazon or eBay are not my 1st choice, or really a choice to buy yarn but Amazon came in handy for finding one more ball of a yarn to finish a project. It sucks losing at yarn chicken, so was glad to find what I needed.

This came right on time! I was struggling trying to find alternative yarn for your Bahama Blanket pattern. Something that was a nice mixed variegated yarn that could blend well together and wasn’t going to have giant chunks of a color or stripes. I visited each site and found the PERFECT yarn at Lovecrafts. It’ll be a gift for my mom for Christmas. Since she crochets herself and quite well I never felt confident making her anything, however Tunisian crochet is something only I do in our family. Jimmy Beans is fantastic. They have amazing customer service. I was planning a fade shawl and trying to pick out yarn colors online. I asked them to help me out and they sent pictures of yarn in different lighting. Then when I was moving I had to put a shawl club subscription on hold. They kept the packages for me in their warehouse for 6 months.
Etsy is such a great resource! I was looking for yarn cones recently and oh my- etsy has it! Alpaca, silk, merino, cotton, bamboo… literally anything you cam imagine. Huge amounts for tiny prices. It’s heaven.
I love these recommendations. I'm in the UK, so some aren't really viable, but when you can't get to the LYS because of motility issues (I'm housebound), then having those amazing places online. Wool Warehouse is my virtual LYS. :)
I have found that Joanne's will give you different dye lots for the same color yarn. This has definitely affected my projects. They also don't notify you of the difference which would give you the option to at least choose if you are okay with the difference in dye lots. This has happened with my last 2 orders and I recently saw another TH-camr that had the same problem. When you order online be sure to check your dye lots before starting your projects. If you're making something small or that the difference in shades wouldn't matter you should be fine. But for larger projects you should definitely check the dye lot numbers. Love your videos lady and I have a friend who is learning how to Tunisian crochet from you. She's learning Tunisian before basic crochet lol
Ohh yay Hobbii and jimmy beans. I accidentally found jimmy beans on a trip I went on at the beginning of the year and absolutely instantly fell in love with them. I love the variety of yarn and accessories they offer
@@blueismylove3128 I generally buy on sale, because yeah, they are expensive (and they almost always have some kind of sale going on, it’s more a matter of when the one you want will be on sale and how long the particular color will stay in stock once it’s on sale). I think where they shine are the gradient yarns. They have a number of yarns with really nice, long gradients, and/or some really nice color combinations. I also like the finish of metallico quite a lot. I’m working on a blanket with their carnival yarn right now, which has a shorter repeating gradient, shorter than the cotton cakes they sell, which I think tend to be on the more popular side for them. Though I’m definitely going to be checking out some Etsy dyers after this too. I’m always up for finding good yarn colors.

Metallico is incredible if you like fuzzy type yarns, I'm using their Universe for several projects right now, I do like their cotton, and I've got an order coming with lots of Azalea and Dahlia cotton blends in some delicious colors 🌺
One of my personal favourites is Pickles yarn, they're a little on the pricier side but I haven't had any trouble with duties (shipping to Canada), and if you catch one of their sales and stock up its great!
Quick question: do you find mid-skein knots in Pickles products? I absolutely detest manufacturers knots, especially when the ombré isn’t matched properly. Sometimes I’m not able to include a lot of product just trying to get to the right place in the color scheme to match up and it’s maddening! I’d pay a higher price to know I’m getting a skein that’s guaranteed to be knot-free.
@@amandahugginkiss61 Not sure how to answer your question since I don't pay attention to mid skein knots. Its more wasteful on a wider scale for yarn manufacturers to throw out the mill ends instead of just tying those knots, so I don't mind them. Also there's no ombré yarns in Pickles' collection, they only do solid and heathered colour yarns. Sorry I can't be more helpful, I hope you find what you're looking for.

My daughter is a VERY hot sleeper (I am too). Wool is temperature regulating & great for really hot or really cold sleepers. I want to crochet a simple wool planner for her. If it turns out good, I will make a big one for me.
May I add that Hobbii has amazing customer service. I recieved yarn that had been damaged by the careless delivery man (it was somehow exposed to heat and melted). I let Hobbii know, and they immediately sent me a replacement, free of charge, no hesitation. Great experience!
I shop online quite a bit, as I live in the middle of the middle of nowhere 😉 Closest small biz yarn store is an hour south. Any "big box" (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc) is about 3 hrs. away.

Independent yarn companies from many different places come to sell their beautiful yarn (and many other items). I save up every year to buy as much as I can! It’s my happy place! :)
I have only just gotten back into knitting since learning how to do Tunisian knitting/crochet I have found this style is so much easier on my hands and wrists, knitting use to cripple me just after one row but Tunisian style is so much easier on one’s hands and wrists, I have been busy designing and making myself a new jacket with beading around the boarders with a cross/diamond affect in the pattern. I have so many designs running around my head at the moment 😹😹😹 My biggest issue is finding the colours/shades that I love so I took the plunge and now only buy plain white just so I can have fun designing my own colours as well. My next adventure into the yarn world is spinning my own yarn I just bought a set of planes so Dad and I can build my own spinning wheel once the weather finally dries up that’s. Living in an area where there are sheep, alpacas and even cotton fields it’s a must to have ones own spinning wheel 😹😹😹 Now I am off to look into,this book you have written on Tunisian style 🤗🤗🤗 Thank you for a great list of on-line shops looking forward to,checking many of them out🤗🤗

Websters in Ashland Oregon has a great online selection. They are fun to visit when I am up there. I also use Wool Warehouse and they only charge $6 or so to ship to the USA. Make sure you change your currency at the top while browsing, however!! Otherwise, you can get all excited about some very low UK prices that are actually doubled when it's in US dollars. Thanks for this wonderful list Toni!! I have zero LYS here except Walmart and JoAnns and they are very, limited in selections. I've been shopping online for yarn for over 18 years!!!
Hit Joann and Michael's and got 9 skeins for less than $30 and that included one of those 3 or so in one huge skeins which are usually $12 by themselves. I was super excited cause I don't usually have that much to spend and it happened to be a sale at both stores.

Seriously, though, thank you for all of this wonderful info! I especially appreciated that you are super inclusive; not only did you remember us folks who are mobility challenged, but also geographically remote areas, and living in Canada. So many times I have been jazzed about something I found online only to find out during check-out that I can’t ship it here at all. I understand shipping costs to me can get pretty spendy as we live in a town in the middle of the Arctic tundra with no road to us except the ice highway for a few weeks each year, but I’d at least like the option of agreeing to it or declining. In today’s electronic global age, why in the world would anyone turn down a sale?

Well done video Toni! I agree with everything you said for sure. The one issue I have is for the Lion Brand company. Their shipping to Canada is is exorbitant. It’s the most expensive of any company I have ever dealt with. As a result I never order from them.
I buy yarn online from a variety of different places, most of which are listed in either your video or your blog post of 10 more places. However, two additional places that I shop from that aren't listed are Herrschner's and Hobby Lobby. Due to medical reasons, I haven't been able to get out much for the last four years so my yarn buying is all done online.
Have been mostly shopping online but didn't know about a lot of these. Thanks. You didn't say it but I will. Both Micheal's and Joannes websites annoying slow, and "jumpy." Will be checking out these other places.

Just a warning to your viewers that while Hobbii has a nice selection, they are in Denmark and I have been waiting for an order for over 4 months. So long that I finally got my money back. The package was lost in customs but I had to get PayPal involved before Hobbii honored my request for refund. So, buyer beware.
@@jclouse06 It's now been four months with no delivery but at least I finally got my refund. I'll never shop with them again because of their refusal to help me without PayPal's push for me.
I've also heard of people getting packages from Hobbii where the package was super beat up, falling apart or even empty. I've seen this happen enough in groups that I have never bought from them.
I am pretty sure U.S customs dislikes Hobbii packages. I have heard from so many people say the same thing about their orders. Some even got told by Hobbii that once Customs gets it it is no longer their problem it's customs.

i just drove an hour and a half to go to a joanns in a slightly bigger town and the yarn selection made me sad 😢😂

I learned how to crochet on a very basic level at a young age. I’ve considered trying to pick it up again. My daughter is a VERY hot sleeper (I am too). Wool is temperature regulating & great for really hot or really cold sleepers. I want to crochet a simple wool planner for her. If it turns out good, I will make a big one for me.

May I add that Hobbii has amazing customer service. I recieved yarn that had been damaged by the careless delivery man (it was somehow exposed to heat and melted). I let Hobbii know, and they immediately sent me a replacement, free of charge, no hesitation. Great experience!

I shop online quite a bit, as I live in the middle of the middle of nowhere 😉 Closest small biz yarn store is an hour south. Any "big box" (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc) is about 3 hrs. away.

I also love to buy yarn annually at our county-run Sheep and Wool Festival. Independent yarn companies from many different places come to sell their beautiful yarn (and many other items). I save up every year to buy as much as I can! It’s my happy place! :)

I have only just gotten back into knitting since learning how to do Tunisian knitting/crochet I have found this style is so much easier on my hands and wrists, knitting use to cripple me just after one row but Tunisian style is so much easier on one’s hands and wrists, I have been busy designing and making myself a new jacket with beading around the boarders with a cross/diamond affect in the pattern. I have so many designs running around my head at the moment 😹😹😹
My biggest issue is finding the colours/shades that I love so I took the plunge and now only buy plain white just so I can have fun designing my own colours as well. My next adventure into the yarn world is spinning my own yarn I just bought a set of planes so Dad and I can build my own spinning wheel once the weather finally dries up that’s. Living in an area where there are sheep, alpacas and even cotton fields it’s a must to have ones own spinning wheel 😹😹😹

Websters in Ashland Oregon has a great online selection. They are fun to visit when I am up there. I also use Wool Warehouse and they only charge $6 or so to ship to the USA. Make sure you change your currency at the top while browsing, however!! Otherwise, you can get all excited about some very low UK prices that are actually doubled when it's in US dollars. Thanks for this wonderful list Toni!! I have zero LYS here except Walmart and JoAnns and they are very, limited in selections. I've been shopping online for yarn for over 18 years!!!
Hit Joann and Michael's and got 9 skeins for less than $30 and that included one of those 3 or so in one huge skeins which are usually $12 by themselves. I was super excited cause I don't usually have that much to spend and it happened to be a sale at both stores.

Seriously, though, thank you for all of this wonderful info! I especially appreciated that you are super inclusive; not only did you remember us folks who are mobility challenged, but also geographically remote areas, and living in Canada. So many times I have been jazzed about something I found online only to find out during check-out that I can’t ship it here at all. I understand shipping costs to me can get pretty spendy as we live in a town in the middle of the Arctic tundra with no road to us except the ice highway for a few weeks each year, but I’d at least like the option of agreeing to it or declining. In today’s electronic global age, why in the world would anyone turn down a sale?

Thanks for this comprehensive overview. Completely agree with most of them, however the ones I use most are local to Netherlands and Belgium - there's really a LOT of places you can buy online! Unfortunately the LYS where I live (or where I've visited and loved the shop in person!) don't have webshops, but some shops are online only so it kinda balances out.

Well done video Toni! I agree with everything you said for sure. The one issue I have is for the Lion Brand company. Their shipping to Canada is is exorbitant. It’s the most expensive of any company I have ever dealt with. As a result I never order from them.
I buy yarn online from a variety of different places, most of which are listed in either your video or your blog post of 10 more places. However, two additional places that I shop from that aren't listed are Herrschner's and Hobby Lobby. Due to medical reasons, I haven't been able to get out much for the last four years so my yarn buying is all done online.
Little Knits in Seattle- I get all my Rowan Felted Tweed there cos they have the best prices. They have great sales on high end yarns.

Ice yarns from Turkey is great. Inexpensive yarns, expensive shipping. But always works out cheaper than here for similar yarns.

Just a warning to your viewers that while Hobbii has a nice selection, they are in Denmark and I have been waiting for an order for over 4 months. So long that I finally got my money back. The package was lost in customs but I had to get PayPal involved before Hobbii honored my request for refund. So, buyer beware.

Oh no! Sorry your package was lost! I've had a package from Hobbii get stuck in customs, but only for about a week before it made its way to me.
@@jclouse06 It's now been four months with no delivery but at least I finally got my refund. I'll never shop with them again because of their refusal to help me without PayPal's push for me.
I've also heard of people getting packages from Hobbii where the package was super beat up, falling apart or even empty. I've seen this happen enough in groups that I have never bought from them.
I am pretty sure U.S customs dislikes Hobbii packages. I have heard from so many people say the same thing about their orders. Some even got told by Hobbii that once Customs gets it it is no longer their problem it's customs.
