    On piano day we should remember that the clavichord, like the piano can also vary the volume of sound it produces, since the strings are struck and not plucked as on a harpsichord. Perhaps this is where the inspiration for Cristofori's later invention came from. In any event, this is a wonderful performance on a very old instrument.

      Great education thank you! I was wondering the history of both the harpsichord and the clavacord. Interesting distinction that one is struck and one is blocked! Thank you so much!

    Wonderful playing on a ''none playable extremely noisy and out of tune'' clavichord. The clavichord itself was made by one of Germany's best makers but they don't look after their instruments in the Metropolitan museum.
    Museum instruments are kept only well from not being destroyed more...are just one step better than humid cellars! these museums are in fact prisons for these instruments where they are hardly ever restored or maintained for serious performance.

      according to the museum: This unfretted instrument, one of two known clavichords by Kintzing, is
      equipped with a pantalon stop, an unusual feature consisting of a second
      row of tangents under the keyboard that aided in sustaining tones.

    • @ddomi008

      @@SoloFalcon1138 I did not hear any evidence that a 'pantalon stop' was being employed.
      I don't hear any extra sustain anywhere. The sound of this clavichord is fine; there are many clavichords (with no 'pantalon stop') that sound just like it, but it is horribly out of tune.There is no excuse for that. The mechanical noice is the worst I've ever heard. It is not the usual 'clacking' of keys.

    • @clavimcg

    First of all, his timing and pace is wonderful, but his chucking of the keys becomes annoying after a bit. I'm sure the performer is used to playing something like a piano forte or harpsichord that has key depth adjustments built in. At any rate, i also think that a certain level of delicacy is needed to play these wonderful old instruments-lovingly maintained, but sadly, still misunderstood in musical- playing context.

    A terrible and outdated instrument of historical interest - only. It does give a few hints of the limitations the musicians and composers worked under at the time.
    Todays real problem is how to save some of the good music actually made at the time - by transposing it to modern instruments.

    • @Clavichordist
      @Clavichordist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Thomas Borgsmidt Not outdated by any means. This instruments needs some restoration, a modern clavichord can be extremely spectacular to play and listen to. The problem though is the recording of this instrument and of recording clavichords in general because they are very soft, but playing one in a quiet house or room makes the instrument come alive and the music sings.

    • @TonyBittner-Collins
      @TonyBittner-Collins 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thomas Borgsmidt I can't disagree enough with such a biased comment. Period instruments can't be deemed as inferior because of their mechanism or sound compared to modern instruments. Replicas have proved to be wonderful in their performance. Their sound is subtle, but their timbre is full of different colours. At that time, each key had a special meaning. Modern instruments with their equal entonation have lost that. I don't know if you noticed that this original clavichord hasn't been restored and properly strung.

    • @thomasborgsmidt304
      @thomasborgsmidt304 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm.... I don't know if You have heard a consort of Crumhorns??? It is not possible to turn the clock back - and some of the music can indeed survive the transplant. I've been to church concerts with gambes - I must admit I didn't hear them. Period.

    • @TonyBittner-Collins
      @TonyBittner-Collins 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I have. Their sound is peculiar and I love it. Gambas are soft instruments, but so elegant and rich in their harmonics. Anyway, my comments are biased because I play early music and for me pre-classical music and instruments are superb.

    • @Clavichordist
      @Clavichordist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! :-)
      I agree the instrument does sound unique. This one though does need a tuning and some maintenance, but as an instrument that's close to 300 years old, it's probably best not to touch it.
      My clavichord is similar to this instrument and is based on one from the same period.

  • @Daniel.W.Bridge
    @Daniel.W.Bridge ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, there are better clavicords to play Bach, or others, in order to listen to an old sound. This one is not properly tuned, and have mechanical problems too. In its time surely would have been much better. So, play on a copy of an old Clavicord, is the only way to listen to the real sound of it, when it was built.
