That's not really a problem for them, since both brands have bought up a lot of the successful craft brands as well (big beer companies solved the craft problem a long time ago this way, a lot like banks did). The bigger problem now, like the video says, is that the overall demand for beer is falling.

The beer companies have been on a spending spree and most of your "craft" breweries that you see at the supermarket is also owned by the big brewers.
Truth is like many industries "Millenials are killing", beer across the board is seeing declining sales. This is partially the fault that Millennials do not have the same disposable income as generations before it, but also millennials have less leisure time. If anything I would say energy drinks are replacing beer for this generation, with the need to be constantly hustling for a new gig or the need to stay focused while you blow off steam by playing a game.

I am a faculty advisor for a fraternity. 30 years ago when I was in school, every college party had this breakdown: 80% beer, 10% wine, 10% spirits. It is gradually changed, especially the last ten years or so to about one fourth beer, one fourth wine, one fourth spirits, and one fourth going dry. When they do drink beer, it is mostly the more expensive craft beers. Rather than drink a case of Natural Light, they would rather drink a six pack of something high end.I don;t know why this has happened.... but I have a theory.

    • @TheDude4077

A big factor I think is drinking age laws. Used to be in a lot of states you could get beer at 18, wine and spirits at 21. This gave beer a natural advantage as it was much easier to obtain. Now that's not the case and the drinking age is 21 for everything in all 50 states, so the playing field is a lot more level.

These "attack ads" should help out both brands by increasing recognition and work as a bit of a collaboration between them whether intentional or not. That being said, they're likely more effective at bringing casual beer drinkers from other large brands than at winning over craft beer / wine / liquor consumers. A "got milk" style campaign that targets wine and liquor drinkers would be far more effective at growing the overall pie rather than just fighting over the remains.
Of course it probably makes sense to do both at the same time. The big companies can pool resources to advertise beer overall while still jockeying for position in the market individually. Even better would be to form some type of beer industry association whose sole goal is to promote / lobby for the industry.

TCJones That’s hardly universal across Europe and really depends on what country you’re in though.
For example here in the Netherlands (and afaik in Belgium) cider has hardly made an impact. Only Strongbow and Jillz (made by Heineken) are even slightly “widespread” and they’re considered a drink for women (competing with white and rosé wine) or young people (competing with mixed drinks).
Traditional pilsner/lager probably has more competition from the rising popularity of trappist/abbey style beers (blond, dubbel, tripel), pale ales and white/wheat beers from both major and craft breweries.
