  • Are the lights in your Chrysler 300's HVAC temperature control module burnt out? Don't worry; the fix is easy! You'll just need a few basic tools, some time, and a few 12V 5mm Grain Of Wheat light bulbs!
    Tools used:
    - 4mm socket
    - Flat screwdriver
    - Some pliers and cutters
    - Soldering iron and desoldering pump. Oh, and some solder.
    Parts needed:
    - 12V 5mm Grain Of Wheat Bulb (found on ebay at about $5/10pcs).
    - You may salvage the base for the bulbs and the blue caps for the bulbs from the old ones.

    With these standard bulbs, touching them isn't so much a problem. Fingerprints don't develop hotspots and won't shatter like a halogen headlamp bulb will. The HVAC knobs have a notch so they cannot be removed without breaking them, unless you turn them fully to the left as you described.
    As a tip, you can use some water or saliva to help slide the "bulb condoms" on more easily. ;-)
    Another tip, if the clear plastic light guides have a brown spot where the bulb sits (very common due to heat buildup) you might be able to get away with scraping some of the brown plastic off.
    There's not enough room in those HVAC panels to do an LED-and-resistor conversion. Besides which, the resistor would have to drop the lion's share of voltage, generating more heat in the process. So I guess everybody's stuck with incandescent bulbs.
    And finally, a suggestion: if you can find the same size bulb in 14v rating, that might be a better idea. Alternators push 13.8v so 12v bulbs will be pushed a little hard. (That's what she said.)
    Nicely done, good sir! You saved yourself $600! OH - and your clock bulbs are dying (damaged filament - banging makes the connection work temporarily). They are a standard T1 3/4" bulb, you can either buy new T1 bulbs pretty cheaply or go all out and hit up superbrightleds.com and nab yourself some T1s in a different color if you like (go for the widest beam pattern for best results). They have their own bases, simple quarter-turn counter-clockwise at the bottom of the back of your clock unit - the bases are black. Easy-peasy. No need to hunt eBay for a working clock!

      On second thought, they appear to be NEO3 or NEO4 bases, similar to what I have in the Park Anywhere Lights switch, Rear Ice Melter switch, and God Damn It's Hot Outside switch in my Camry.

      Some great tips here! Especially the part where you spit on the thingy to slide the condom on - why havn't I thought of that! ;)
      But yeah! Great tips, so I'll pin this comment!
      And thanks for letting me know about the clock! I was wondering what the heck was up with it and why it did that!

    I appreciate your willingness to fix your car on your own. There are less and less of us these days. I keep my repairs to my personal channel, when I do decide to record, but maybe I should start posting on Bad Drivers as well.

    • @TheRoadsHereSuck
      @TheRoadsHereSuck  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!
      There are indeed less and less of us these days. When you take a thing and break it down into the simplest terms, ie. a light bulb in a circuit - it's an easy fix? Why wouldn't anyone do it themselves? - It makes sense to fix everything.
      But that's also where the problem lies - breaking things down into their simplest form and understanding it. People see a black box they can't name in a dashboard they don't know how to take apart and just go "to hell with it".
      As cars get more modern, people feel more and more alienated, I suppose. My girlfriend's father for example, says he can't fix squat anymore these days. I tell him some cars are stupidly easy to fix, for example in the 300 the EGR valve is right there and the alternator is right there and PCV valve is right there and so on - and his reply? "oh no no no, none of that EGR PCV IAT Sensor bullcrap. I just miss the days where you had an engine and a carburetor." The man is wrong but he's right at the same time..
      I ramble on and on and on. Sorry. Thank you so much for watching, and I hope you enjoy the video!
      As for putting repair videos up on your bad drivers channel - I suppose it wouldn't hurt anything!

      I see what he says, but the thing is back then cars were a simple system. Once you spend the time and energy to understand the more complex systems that cars have turned into, and you take those complex systems and break them down into simplistic individual pieces, the sense of satisfaction is that much greater. It is far more frustrating, and the further you go down the rabbit hole, the more involved you get, but i get enjoyment out of figuring out how complex things work.

    • @TheRoadsHereSuck
      @TheRoadsHereSuck  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm the same way - I like it when a complex thing becomes easy or understood. I guess maybe some people just expect it to be fixable and then get frustrated when it isn't so readily apparent what they have to do?

    Solid tutorial, sir! I really like the detail, down to the placement of the leads and the soldering process. Quality work, although this is coming from someone who hasn't soldered in a good five years! Congratulations on saving yourself a nice chunk of change.

      @feildcar4578 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Had to solder them in but it was super easy doesn't matter witch direction you put em on like positive negative doesn't matter..just don't over do it with the solder.

    I'm glad I saw your video. Thanks. I have a 2008 Charger SRT8 but the board looks exactly the same. I was getting ready to use LEDs.. Does the factory use standard bulbs? Can they be mixed? And lastly, is prying the base out a one-time trick if they're soldered back in?

    hello sir, i was wondering if you know if the cluster lights are the same way and if they are the same bulb... i see you say they are 12V 5mm grain of wheat bulbs for the temp controls. Ive been wanting to change all the lights to red for a while cause i dont like the green.. would appreciate any info or advice you have , thank you for your time.

    • @TheRoadsHereSuck
      @TheRoadsHereSuck  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that. However, the 5mm grain of wheat bulbs have a blue plastic "condom" over them, so to speak - so the yellow light goes through the blue plastic to make green light. **IF** the instrument cluster lights are the same way, all you'd have to do is change the plastic covers.
      As an aside, if you do take the instrument cluster apart, when you plug it back in, make sure you do so without the plastic cover - since the needles might have to come off to get to the insides, you might have to re-calibrate them. There's a combination of buttons to press that'll sweep the gages; I don't have any videos on that, but I believe it shouldn't be too hard to find on the web.

      I'm not too sure. If I'm honest, this is the first time I ever heard of such a thing and my mind is blown o:

    So I have no lights on my controls and my ac only works in auto and sometimes still dont work.

      I'm unsure if a new climate control module would fix that, but if you find one for cheap, it might be worth trying.

    The Roads Here Suck,
    Do these bulbs give off that green/ice blue color straight from the bulb itself or do we need a blue rubber cover just like the clock?
    Regards,
    Sean

    • @TheRoadsHereSuck
      @TheRoadsHereSuck  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I'm sorry for the late reply!
      The bulbs themselves give off yellow light. The blue condom thingy is needed, as it will mix with the yellow light to make green.
      Thanks for watching, by the way!

    Why couldnt they just use wedge bulbs for an easier replace. Gotta make things complicated. Shame on you manufacturers.

    • @TheRoadsHereSuck

      In the A/C Temperature control module those are 12V 5mm grain of wheat bulbs (you can find them on Ebay).

      Does the part you have look exactly like the one in my vid? The backlights in the circuit look like.. How to describe it.. Like blue buttons, almost. Labelled on the circuit as PL1 PL2 PL3 and so on, (if I remember correctly).

      The Roads Here Suck my ac controls are different because my 300 is a base model

    • @TheRoadsHereSuck
      @TheRoadsHereSuck  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, well that would explain why it's different - it's a different part. Still, should be similar. I suggest looking for something that looks like a pill stood up inside a white plastic cube of sorts.

      I would've preferred the used LEDs! But I can't be too mad considering the car was made in the times of CRT Televisions and Windows XP..!
