      It washes everything even dirty or clean foods cause they were called water bears

      Raccoons don't "like" dirty things. They clean everything as far as food when they can otherwise they do the ol "give it a glance then down the hatch" they actually make great pets although they have a tendency to be theives of hair ties and such from what i know of em

    • @meetingmyomens

      They are not actually doing it to clean food. They do it to have a better feel at what they are holding and will eventually eat.

    I think the problem with keeping raccoons as pets is that they're too smart for their own good. ): anything with such high level of intelligence would naturally get discontent and rowdy in a controlled home setting. They'd feel entitled to doing everything a human does; opening fridges and taking the food, messing with possessions as if they were their own, etc.

      VII You have no idea. When I was a kid we once had a pet raccoon that ransacked the entire kitchen one night after tearing through a screen door with its claws. It then walked all the way upstairs and crawled in bed with my parents before being chased out of the house by my mom.

      Kawaii Potato isn't it??? And people villanize raccoons as such filthy creatures. Not their fault that we've impeded on their territories and taken all their resources so they're left to dig through our trash to survive.

    • @josephevans1490
      @josephevans1490 7 ปีที่แล้ว +98

      It certainly isn't a conscious decision to clean their food. They do this in any water source regardless of the presence of food. The main potential reasons are that :
      It is merely instinct. Many raccoons typically hunt clams, and etc by water sources. Because this sometimes requires digging, and potentially other reasons, their hands have adapted, and are able to retrieve a lot of sensory information. Washing their hands helps them receive more information.
      This would also explain why raccoons love touching and patting things so much.

    • @MrWolfSnack
      @MrWolfSnack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      They put the food in water not to wash it, but the water helps the nerves on their paws feel things better, so they know what it is they have, if its a nut, a stone, a fruit, a candybar, what have you.
