  • My family and I went on a vacation to Florida so I decided to pick up a budget-friendly travel ultralight rod to test out if I had time. Fortunately I was able to sneak out for a few fishing sessions throughout the trip (shoutout to my wife for taking baby duty during those sessions).
    I was happy that I caught a ton of Ladyfish! It made it even better that they were all caught on Mule Fishing gear - Donkey Tail or Mule Minnow 3.2 on a 3/32oz Mule Jig. They weren't the hardest fighting fish of my life but the cool part was that they could jump super high so that was fun to watch.

    Nathan i have been watching you a long time. Love that the toothy lizard fish did no damage to the mule minnow despite his dragon teeth. Really enjoying the rod & reel and line demos but only because you are transparent, not on the take, smart and very clear about what you like AND WHY. Context is everything and i so appreciate it from someone like you who is smart, self-deprecating, experienced, and ALWAYS LEARNING!! You and i are brothers in ADHD. Love from Huskerville.

    I am a big fan of the travel rod concept. I don't know why, but I think I'm obsessed with the cases they come in. It's actually hilarious, I have a 10 foot long fly rod locker on top of my truck, but won't buy a fly rod anymore that won't break down to at least 4 pieces. 🤣
    I also just bought a 4 piece Fenwick Eagle. I didn't need it, but I liked the tube. 😁

    Big (2-foot-class) ladyfish are an absolute blast on ultralight / fly tackle. A shame you did not get one of those snook to play; would have been fun to watch you try to manage one of those beasties on that outfit. Beautiful area you were in. Hope you had fun; be sure to get all the salt out of your gear. Thanks!

      Some flash is often helpful when targeting ladyfish, crevalle jacks, etc. , but when those critters get in a feeding mood, not much that hits the water is completely safe. Fishing the surf is usually free of obstructions, but there is also a chance that a big fish can spool you. Been there, done that.

    About how far were you able to cast? I am just getting back into fishing after several years and I always just fished live bait and really want to get into lures and jigs but my old Walmart specials in the garage are needing replacement. I went ahead and bought the Defy Silver 6 ft 6 in one piece UL with a Daiwa Revros 1000 because I love panfish. Thanks for the review videos. Now if I can just figure out the baitcaster someone gave me 🤪

      With this setup, 6lb braid, and a 3/32oz Mule Jig / Donkey Tail, I was whipping it out there as far as I would ever need to. That said, this rod would not have done very well with TRUE ultralight jigs (1/64oz and whatnot). Tight lines Rich!

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the 5'6 model so I didn't want to bring it since it is so short and I figured I wouldn't be able to get the distance I wanted. That said, the Presso is absolutely a better rod & I would highly recommend it if you can find them.

    I own the 2-piece version of the 7' UL Spinmatic. It kind of sucks: it's nose heavy, insensitive, whippy and lacks backbone. The components are pretty low-end too. I rarely use it.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would never buy this rod as a primary setup. For $50 however, it is a good travel rod to use. I don't need a super high end travel rod since I very rarely fish while traveling.

      @@FishAnything It's hard to find a cheap UL that doesn't have these drawbacks. That's why I prefer Light over UL. A 5 1/2 foot two-piece is compact enough for me. Mine fits in a backpacker guitar base, along with tools and tackle. I use it a lot.

    I didn't think about UL fishing when I went to the beach, but now I'm kicking myself and wishing I did. A buddy of mine recommended an 8ft rod for surf fishing. Helps get some distance.
    Also that tackle box your jigs are in looks sweet.

    • @oldeschoolbob1022
      @oldeschoolbob1022 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It kind of depends on conditions, and what's lurking in the surf zone. Distance is great to get out beyond the breakers. Agree on the tackle box; I'm a sucker for "push button, and other stuff moves" technology.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yuri - I never said it was a bad rod if you watched the entire video. It is a lower price point and does a great job for the price it comes in at. When comparing it to slightly more expensive stuff, it doesn't do as well. I feel that should be noted for people who are considering a broader price range.
