    Listening to Ian Chappel doing his dissection on a cricket team is always a pleasure, his analytic views, uncompromising comments is always spot on, see how correct he was on not picking Khawaja as a opener in Hobert. He may be sometimes harsh but mostly correct in his analysis.

    I think it's harsh on Leach. He's suffering partially because Root and Silverwood doubt him and set him negative fields, and he's just carried the drinks for a year without playing. Then he gets brought back into an Ashes series where the Aussies are after him, his own skipper doesn't rate him, and he's trying to defend less than 200 runs. If he'd come into this series after a solid year in the side, overs under his belt and Root had faith in him you'd see a different bloke

    • @Dilmahkana
      @Dilmahkana 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably would see a different bloke. And people are harsh. But also, what's in his arsenal as a spinner? Adequate spin, but next to no drift, minimal revs it seems-two thing you need in Aus as a spinner.

      Mate, a good test player doesn't give a rat's f**k about what his captain, coach, fans think about him or rate him. He goes out there and performs, delivers for his country. Leach is the most useless cricketeer i've ever seen! This English side is so bad that they don't have a decent test match spinner to perform. What a nightmare for English cricket fans! Lol

    • @mrkipling2201

      Not only that but they played him in Brisbane which was a totally unsuitable pitch. Broad should have played there and Leach should have played in Adelaide.

      When we rip the best players out of the side to play the limited overs game it leaves large holes to fill.. in truth England are playing a side of reserves with the exception of 2 or 3 bowlers and a couple of batsmen.. this Australian side in my honest opinion are nothing special.. they’ve had much better sides in the past but yes they’ve ‘done enough’.. to score a pretty poor first innings and beat our lot by an innings speaks volumes.. Roy, Bairstow, Morgan should be in there and not throwing the bat in limited overs

    Love the way two Aussies are so insightful about England's problems - they can see and highlight the obvious freely. Pick your best side, pick your best Wicketkeeper, Silverwood is not a Test Coach, Root is not a Captain and definitely not a Test Captain. I can imagine the uproar in Aussie if we made the England set-up the Aussie set-up. Archer is a big miss (just watch him against the Aussies on here) but look at how he was handled and overbowled by Root which then supposedly led to the injury problems

    • @bruno5137
      @bruno5137 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah I was pleasantly surprised by how much attention and knowledge they displayed about our problems. Silverwood has to go now, Buttler's test career must be over, the ECB need to reinstate Ed Smith or someone else outside the team as a selector to prevent groupthink, we need to play more county games in the summer and not April and October, and go for a someone like Kirsten or another big name Test level coach. I would even be open to the idea of Eoin Morgan being test captain and Buttler taking over the one-day sides. I know Morgan's test batting record is not great, but his leadership would more than make up for that. But will the ECB do all of the above it?? Very unlikely. Instead they'll sign another mega TV deal for the Hundred and pat themselves on the back.

  • @TheGilbalfas

    Khawaja has ripened into the world class player that Australia has always hoped. With is fitness and discipline he could play to 40 - look at Anderson. Its just that he has taken this long to become the complete package. He is head and shoulders above Marcus Harris in talent and he averages big runs at opening. He must be opener for Hobart and Australia looks formidable with Warner, Smith, Labschagne and Khawaja.

      Given my name I believe it's mandatory to continue this thread.
      Joe Root is a nice guy, and top level batter. The only reason he is captain is that he is the only England player guaranteed selection.
      He seems to have very little feel for the state of a game, and is too much of a nice guy when hard on-field decisions need to be made.

    I have a lot of time for Ian Chappell as he is a cricket great and probably one of the best captain the game has ever seen. However, it is quite clear he doesn't like Khwaja. It is personal. Both times Khwaja came out to bat English bowlers had Australia in trouble, there was a slide of wickets. Broad and Wood had their tails up and Khwaja made sure Australia didn't lose any more wickets and then when he got set he went on to attack. Compare that to when Head came out to bat in Gabba there was a decent score behind him, it was no pressure batting. Khwaja's both innings at SCG were master class and he quite clearly looked Australia's most assured batsman the whole series. If you call this English bowling line up mediocre you are essentially calling two bowlers with 1100 wickets between them mediocre and a fast bowler that clocks 150 quite regularly. England is currently having some deeper discussions around racial bias in their cricket due to Yorkshire, perhaps Australia should do the same as the short handedness shown to Khwaja over his career lacks common sense otherwise.

    Another note. You should reserve comment on Cummins until Aus play SA and tour sub continent.
    Another worry, should be burn out. When Imran, Akram did that they did not have a packed schedule and $ making opportunities through franchise cricket.
    Didn't Khawaja struggle in India?
    It is inevitable that teams like Aus, India can afford "horses for courses" type of playing XI. This is where it is leading.
    Chappeli keeps on saying India is difficult wrt Hazlewood. OTOH, India has a decent pace battery. How did those guys manage?
    Well, someone has to be captain for England. Also, quicks can win games in Aus. But, did India have blokes who can bowl at 140K+ when they toured last year..?

  • @bobagorof
    @bobagorof 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure I agree with Chappell's argument that you can't drop a guy on Shield form. They're selected on Shield form, so why not? I could easily argue that (apart from on tour), the side for each match is selected independently of the previous match - it's just that usually, if a guy is deemed good enough to be selected and then doesn't make a hash of it, they are generally considered good enough to be selected for the next match.
    But back to the point - if a Test player goes back to Shield after some middling scores at the end of a series, and fails to display improved form, what is the justification for continuing to pick him for the next Test? You can see he's out of form. Few players manage to be in form for Tests while simultaneously being out of form for First Class. Prolonged lack of runs at Shield level very much should be taken into consideration for a Test player, just as a prolonged series of scores should be taken into consideration for a non-Test player.
    In any case, he's factually incorrect that Renshaw wasn't dropped for poor form. He averaged 25 from his previous 12 innings at Test level, and was trending downwards.

    If you’d told me at the start of the series that England would limit both Smith and Warner to below a 40 average I’d have fancied our chances. Our batters however are just completely inept and have been for a long time. It’s only because of Root having an almost ATG year things would have looked even worse before this series.

    A cantankerous git at times but Chappell's opinions are often interesting and listenable, both on cricket and other subjects. Fully agree with him on Ben Foakes. A better keeper and batsman than Butler. What he's done wrong to be overlooked who knows? He's done nothing wrong when he's been selected in the past. Agree, they've badly missed Archer and Stone who would have been perfect in Australian conditions. Not sure where he's coming from with Dom Bess. He's done little when given his chances in the test team. Very erratic and expensive at times.
