Doug Walters my favourite batsmen of all time. When I was a kid I would sit in front of the telly waiting to watch him bat. I just love the way he attacked the bowling. He got 104 not out on a minefield wicket in New zealand as Ian said. Wish there was video of that innings. Whole team out for about 200. Ian is a great story teller. I only saw Doug get a century live once. 159 for NSW. against W.A. Dennis Lillee was bowling.

That's funny, I was at that game on a school excursion and got to chat with Lillee (together with my schoolfriends) when he was resting on the boundary. It was something special watching Dougie knock that WA attack around.

His whole generation was like that. Listen to Boycott, Gavaskar, Holding, and others... just amazing story tellers.

4:27 batting team drinking beers while the game is still in progress. Got to love the 1970's!

I would go on listening to Ian Chappel even if India is in the final of a world cup and my son is playing.
    Thank you Ian

Doug had very little of the strike in the last hour, Ross Edwards kept getting singles off the last ball of the over. When he hit a 6 off the last ball it was the coolest walk off the field ever, everyone was going nuts and Doug didnt even pause to look where the ball had gone, just tucked the bat under the arm and taking off the gloves as he went, just another day at the office. When he resumed his innings the following day he couldnt even get his bat anywhere near the ball and was dismissed very quickly without adding to his score, perhaps a bit of celebrating may have occurred the previous night.

No wonder Ian loves Shehwag. Graeme Pollock, Doug Waters, Viv Richards were all players with little footwork and great balance who depended on hand-eye coordination to dismantle bowling attacks, and were all his batting heroes.

Notice APE Knott top scorer in the 1st innings. What a fantastic player he was

Doug Walters. Also an occasional bowler who had the knack of breaking partnerships with his medium pacers.

Doug Walters seemed like the perfect no.6. Once a team's got you 4 wickets down, they often sense a sniff. This guy could take the game away from the opposition very quickly, like Gilchrist, Botham, Sobers, Steve Waugh, Hashan Tillekeratne and Tony Greig.
