Thanks for the reply. I did not word my e-mail correctly. Tonight's the Night was recorded after the 72-3 tour but before compiling Time Fades Away (rel. Oct. 73). That is why I deleted my original post. Does that sound right? Anyway, you are the first I responded to ever. Very compelling series you have going and this is my favorite Neil period. Keep up the great work!
I probably haven't done it justice with my previous commitment. For me this whole album is a bit like how a method actor approaches their work. There is an awful lot of skill needed to sound this wasted and f#@ked up, and not be able to play, the vocals are magnificent, particularly the backing on Roll another number, slightly out of tune and time but still on point and perfect. He felt responsible for Danny Whittens death, how do you deal with that? He was going to release Homegrown but at a listening party, this was on the same tape reel and his friends suggested this instead. Like I know it's bleak and depressing and dark as f#£k BUT it's so beautiful and a perfect tribute to Danny and Bruce.
@theopinionatedhippie470 I am not sure if you are diving into Archives volume 2 but there are a couple of different outtakes on there from the session which are well worth hearing. Borrowed tune was actually recorded during On the beach sessions but fits right in.
Some of his best lyrics ever on this album! Mellow My Mind is so heart wrenching
My favourite Neil Young album, everything about it is perfect. I can't think of any other album that sounds like it.

Dark and depressed, wasted album. I really like it.
Great list shaggy but the next album will always be my favourite Neil album ZUMA. Any album that has Cortez the killer and dangerbird on it WOW!!!!!!

I wonder why the stones didn't sue for stealing the melody of borrowed tune 🤔🇬🇧
Maybe because they are cool…?
