This album was released when I was in high school. A bunch of my buddies listened to it at a party and concluded that it was a career suicide note; that the guy who'd had those HARVEST hits and played with CS&N was indeed about to fade away. Despite the fact that Neil name-checks our hometown a couple of times (where "the punches came fast and hard"), it was an easy album to dismiss. Took me years to rediscover it when I found a beat up copy at a thrift store. The scrappy performances and brittle sound somehow felt contemporary... Neil's punk record! This is one of my favourite live albums and easily in my Top 5 Neil Young albums. It's not always easy to listen to someone falling apart in front of an audience but the raw emotion and dark humour that Neil is channeling here is remarkable. I'm glad it's finally out on CD so I can pass along that beat up vinyl record to my stepson. Great review, Shaggy!
Love the ditch trilogy. Next couple weeks is gonna be great. Don’t be denied is a top 10 Neil track For me. Didn’t hear this until a few years ago due to it being so hard to get hold of but when I did I loved it. Yeah this is where he becomes the your going to get what I want to give you not what you want me to give you Neil for sure. 1 everybody knows 2 after the gold rush 3 time fades away 4 Harvest 5 self titled Also gave Tuscaloosa a bonus spin this week. Really enjoying the deep dive.
It took me ages to get a copy of this because I wanted it on cd and he wouldn't release it, so I picked it up on vinyl around 30 years ago. The back story about Danny is important because that's what put him in the ditch. One of the other reasons he was reluctant about to put it on disc was he felt the Stray gators were the wrong band, because of how raw the music is, it probably should have been a Crazy horse record but I am glad it's the Gators. I am sure you know this but Tuscaloosa is also from the same tour and it's not as raw. Archives volume 2 kinda expands this set. He got Crosby and Nash in because he was having a crap time. Fun fact at the end of Last dance he sings the word No 43 times on the trot. My favourite Ditch album is Tonights the night and it's actually my favourite Neil Young album. I also think Homegrown lives in the Ditch. Really enjoyed this Shaggy.
