Hi Mike. I am a 61 year old architectural draftsman in Australia who specialises in construction documentation, specifically detailing, and always in AutoCAD since 1988. I have been flirting with Revit for a few years, but only knew really low level stuff like how to place walls etc. Six months ago I joined a team who is documenting a hospital specifically in Revit. I knew nothing. However, after watching many of your videos, I am now a fully productive member of the team. I want to thank you so much for the knowledge you have given me. Being older, I have to maintain a competitive edge in the industry. The skills you have given me will definitely extend my career. Whenever I get stuck, the first thing I do is check whether you have a video to cover it. You have made a huge difference in my life and I want to thank you so much for it.

You are so welcome Neil. This TH-cam channel is my contribution back to the design community. I’ve been at it (architecture) for a looooong time and learned a lot over the years and decided to give back to those with similar needs. Many blessings to you!

Thanks Mike! I knew there was something funky going on with rooms and phases but never had the time or patience to get into it.

Thanks Andy. I finally got to the bottom of the issue and had to tell people! =)

    Love it. Thanks very much
Any chance you could do a video about residential framing ? I’d love to be able to see framing members , wall studs etc

Revit treats the wall materials all as layers. It sees the gypboard (drywall) as 5/8" or 1/2" thick), and it sees the 2x4 studs as 3 1/2" ... like a layer. So, the actual 'studs' and framing members (kings, jacks, cripples, top/bottom plates, etc.) are NOT actually in the wall. To see these, you would need to model them individually. We typically show these 'faked' in the sections to help the contractor see our design intent (even if the actual wood members is not in the model).

Another extremely useful video. I had several times problems with rooms and now I know why. I also used to have a lot of phases in my projects, trying to simulate the construction procedure. But I found that phases have a lot of problems. Like in your video this behavior with rooms is not good. If you would like to change the bathroom with storage it would be more convenient to demolish the room and make a new one. But you can't. Another problem with phases is with building pads. Even if I don't use revit topography tools any more, instead I use rhino inside for that and I have perfect results, pads not working with phases. Another problem with phases is that if you demolish a door or window in one phase the hole is automatically close which is not right. I have placed an idea in autodesk ideas forum about supporting phases inside families parts. So if I demolish a window or a door I can demolish everything except the cut object. Workarounds exist. I make holes in the walls and then I remove the cut objects from door and windows families but that's not ideal. Also if we speak for phases even multilayer walls should support different pahase for each layer.
Anyway thanks for the good job.

You are spot on with your comments! Phases can bring some issues with them. I am not a fan of 'work-arounds' but sometimes they get the job done. I hope Autodesk implements your suggestion. And I don't like the INFILL automatically being placed when a door/window is demolished.. that should be a choice.. not the default.

Great Video. I am understanding this more and more. I am stuck again on demolition of Reflected Ceiling Plans and showing the ceiling grid as dashed lines. All I get to show up on the RCP is a dashed redline around the perimeter, but the grid remains in solid lines. How do I get this grid to look like the demo lines as hidden/Dashed line work? Any help on this would be great. Thanks

The best way to make the grid of the demolished ceiling to be dashed... is to create a Line Style that matches what you are using in the Phase settings. My Demolished items are a #4 lineweight with 'demolished' as the pattern. So I created a new Line Style with these settings and I use 'Pick Lines' and place a Detail Line right over the light solid lines of the ceiling tiles. It is the best way Revit has until they fix this. I hope this helps. It's not perfect, but it works.

Great idea. I've never shown a circular window. I'll put that on the list of videos to make! Thanks!
