Deadliest Journeys - Tanzania: Race for Life

  • Lake Tannganyika in Tanzania, East Africa, is the biggest in the world, and is remarkably beautiful. The Tanzanians have two options to cross it: 20 hours on a pickup truck on a road riddled with potholes or 3 days of sailing on the oldest cargo ship in the world, the LIEMBA. On track, traders try to reach the market but torrential rain disrupts the route. The captain struggles to maintain order.

I was reading up on the ship Liemba, not only is it 100+ yrs old it also spent 8 yrs at the bottom of the lake. Scuttled in 1916 then raised up again in 1924.

I am grateful for this humbling documentary. Wonderful piece of journalism. These videos should be mandatory in Western schools, so that people can see what others in the world have to do to survive and not waste food and recourses and have more compassion towards the poor.

I know many American blacks think their lives are tough but they need to see this and realize while maybe they don’t have all they like they are very blessed in relation to these people. I don’t know how these lovely people survive the hardships they face everyday. I’ve been to 3rd world countries and the people are amazing and it made me realize how backwards priorities in America are. These people fight for one tiny meal a day that has little nutritional value homes that are worse mud floor no electricity or running water and many families crowded into small spaces. Spoil young Americans should have to visit a 3rd world nation and see how lucky they have it. It’s so sad that their lives or so hard. The bulk of the worlds population lives like this between China , India , Africa and many more nations

my parents and older brothers were involved in a car crash in Tanzania in Dec 1963 between Sanje and Kisawasawa , their Land rover overturned and one of my brothers was dangling upside down from his child seat, my mother who was fully pregnant broke her arm, apart from that no-one was hurt. Fortunately the bus in front stopped and people got out and turned the car upright again. The steering had broken. My dad got a mechanic to fix it, who also changed the oil, but left the oil plug loose. Three days later my dad had awful pains in his chest muscles, and couldn’t breathe, so he got someone to drive him the 40 miles to the nearest hospital in Ifakara , on the way all the oil drained out of the loose plug, and the engine seized!

Nice visuals but too much negativity, Most of the coutry is connected by modern roads, Also the sick person is from Kigoma with has modern zonal medical facility, Acording to the number plate on Mini van next to the faulty bus it implies that it was shot at around 2013 if u also put in count drone technology used in the film, all this implies the documentary was focused on the worst aspects in Tanzania

Tanzania has developed a lot since this seems to have been filmed. Or the filmaker chose to exaggerate. Maybe a bit of both. Health facilities are more prevalent, many more roads are paved and there is a new boat on the lake. Also, witchcraft is not as common as is depicted.
