A lot of western people refuse to believe it. Saying a different things. The reason is because it is cheaper and the quality is Ok. We may not be a prefect country but we try as no place on this planet can be call Prefect country.

Look, Malaysians are majority conservative Sunni Islamic society, very different from the Buddhist Thailand or the Catholic Philippines, which have notorious reputation for prostitution and porno videography. However, they have relaxed a bit on alcohol, pork, etc (which are prohibited for Muslims) and liberalize visas in order to grow/develop like Singapore. They are apprehensive about foreigners influencing their culture, but they must further reform immigration and property ownership/taxations regulations to compete for money/jobs that western and eastern businesses, tourists, retirees and digital expats are bringing, which is key to fueling rapid growth of the 10 ASEAN countries.

Then, enters the developers, investors, and soon your good thing is not so very good anymore.
      I lived through that.

As an English teacher, I want to thank you for your compliments over our English standard. Yes, we are comparable to Singapore in English but we are more low profile. Many years ago, there was an Australian lecturer commented the English standard between Singapore and Malaysia student, she said Singapore England command is good in writing, but for communication purpose, Malaysian’s English seems easier to comprehend, she claimed that Singapore student tends to use fancy words while talking which is unnecessary, an effective communication is to make sure the person you talk to is able to understand easily, and not to show of how good your English is

I'm really glad the Malaysian government imposes high taxes on alcohol, making it more expensive and less appealing to party-oriented tourists. Over-tourism is a real issue these days, as seen in places like Kyoto, Bali, Amsterdam, and Barcelona. We prefer respectful and sober tourists here, and like Bali and Amsterdam, we've seen the challenges that come with rowdy visitors.
By the way, Ben, the Malaysian Ringgit is strengthening against the USD. Also, there's a huge agriculture exhibition happening-MAHA 2024. It only occurs every two years, and it's massive, like the Disneyland of agriculture! 😝

Really prefer Malaysia to be underrated and not ‘advertised’ because the more popular we are, the more crowded it becomes and impact on cost of living for the average Malaysian. However, I agree that the right kind of tourist or expat should come in and the need to respect the multi ethnicity, multi religious and multi culture in Malaysia.

The schools outside our price range were really nice, definitely have more Western expat teachers and children.
We are going for mid range schools as we saw them to be just as good but less Western expats there, which I don't really care about. Food was cheap and great but you can splash out and go more expensive and "fancy". I am going back in Feb to check out more schools.

I'm going to retire next year and the way western countries like the US are heading moving to somewhere in southeast Asia looks very tempting and exciting! Not only would one's money go a lot further there but the people seem so friendly and the lifestyle there is much more to my liking! Do you have an opinion for future retirees coming to Malaysia? Would it be a good place to retire? The highest applicants for MM2H are from China, capturing 40% of the application. There are increasing Japanese and Korean as well, many come here just to enroll their kids in private school so they can be proficient in English, which they can save a lot of money than a private school in Korea. Interestingly some have expressed that they wanted to escape the materialism culture in S.Korea. Japanese dads pays a fraction of the cost to play golf in Malaysia.
Another group that specifically chose Malaysia are Muslims from Western countries; they come so that they can raise their children here.
Interestingly I came across a new poll today from Singapore, that 55% of her citizen would consider moving to Johor if the living cost in Singapore continues to be unbearable.

I hope Malaysia stays underrated, and I have 2 theories on why it will. The first, with the exception of the Sarawak MM2H visa, all the other options require substantial bank deposits and purchasing real estate. That "cost of entry" will ensure only higher wealth people come visit Malaysia long term. The second, and its for reasons Ben mentioned, Malaysia isn't really considered a party place. If that's your goal, certain parts of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand got you covered and their requirements to qualify are much lower. Most of the content creators on TH-cam covering Malaysia are passing through on a tourist visa....although there are some doing the Rantau Nomad Pass which allows them to stay up to 2 years (maximum).

I don't mind if other people outside Malaysia love or hate Malaysia by either showing good or bad sides of us.
However when I look at BKK and Bali how the locals had to cater their "needs, social demands and requirements". That doesn't bode with us at all. The tourists will blend with our pristine culture and religious value. We don't want next generation to lose those two because some gringos manage to change the manner and behavior of the youngs. So, blending with culture and adaptation to the value, is the core of healthy tourism or long term stay.

As a former British colony, Malaysia is not new to this expat thingy. So it is probably better to put an end to this kind of 'invitational promotion'. This isnt about fun and hospitality anymore. It is now becoming a political tool for some 'expat' politicians to lure in more potential voters from their 'motherland'.

I'm one of those Msians strongly feeling and even commented after watching tourist vloggers proclaiming Msia is underrated with responses, 'Hey, let it be, Msia the most underrated!' ie under the radar. Thailand is now confronted with all sorts of social and crime issues due to the influx of Westerners, including from eastern Europe, in particular Russians fleeing frm army conscription due to the Ukraine war. News reports Russians are conspicuous, literally taken over Phuket, involved in doing biznes, renting buying(?) properties , transport rental biz, etc . Creating discomfort among locals. Watch CCTV vids shirtless Westerners boldly jumped on for quick hijacked, stole thai women's motorcycle parked by roadside. We're they high or desperate? Been in Bkk city shopping centres but could hardly walk leisurely thru amidst melee of locals and tourists thronging thru malls, f&b centres. Bkk chinatown steathly overtaken by mainland Chinese setting up biz and shady triads gang network. A triad headhoncho with mainland China connection with multimilllion underworld biz HQ in Bkk was caught. Millions worth of properties seized by Thai police. News of murder cases involving tourists/expats on Bkk Post, PattayaMail, etc. Scary!😨. Dont misconstrue. The Thais mostly are refined cultured gentle religious pple. Respectful of others. Beautiful scenic landscape away frm Bkk. Touristics places sadly overcrowding. It's just quite some visiting western foreigners causing headache to the local authorities. Nay! No, Nada! We don't want these in Msia. Msia too have burglary, murder cases by foreign workers, but according to Bukit Aman police hq, stats is negligible %age. Safety level quite high. Stayed briefly in the Bronx, NuYork, panic got lost alone in Harlem past 11 p.m. A sojourn mid dwntwn Manhatten but overshot train stop at 110 str. Thought won't come out alive!😅 But recent few yrs back Harlem is transfom, right? A frequent incidents in tge US recent school gunshooting with 4 dead in nearby Detroit heart-fainting. Once caught amidst police and gun throtting POI in downtown LA. Thumping heart! And yes, Ben, spot on. Get the right wholesome foreigners/expats to visit/work, professionals or for retirement purposes. They're absolutely most welcome into the fabric of Msian culture and lifestyle. English language, hey no probs for many even those with smattering English. Tbh Malay language is most easiest for quick learn and to master. For a brief hedonistic fun party break, just hop on a train or cheap flight to nearby Thailand beaches or to Bali-hai😂. Peninsular Malaysia is the end-tip of Asia continent, literally geographically centrestage of Asia dotted with paradiso islands with turquoise sea. Go island hopping to hearts content. Malaysia Iiving up to her famed tagline, 'Malaysia is truly Asia', a melting pot of multitude of Asian and now including worldwide ethnicities and nationality! Am i unconsciously over-promoting my beloved country. The irony of wanting to be underrated! Hmmm. quite 'scary' huh actually? 🤔.

We don't want to rely on tourism for growth but tech and industrial growth since those sectors are much more sustainable than tourism. Actually we want to encourage domestic tourism; we want the locals to travel in-house and encourage money flows internally and explore their own country. Malaysia is quite big and a year will never be enough to explore the whole nation.
