Maybe that motherboard isn't dead after all: from a bit of research it looks like it only supports Mendocino Celerons (300-533 MHz) and nothing else. The 440LX chipset doesn't support Pentium IIIs at all.

You have solved the problem. I really should've researched this more before buying the board, but thank you for pointing this out.

Could BIOS mods solve that compatibility issue?

@@victorfigueroa9385 not really. The 440LX chipset was only validated for 66MHz FSB speeds (it was released with the original Pentium II and even had support for the Pentium Pro). The Pentium III requires at least a 100MHz FSB, or 133MHz FSB for later variants.

@@OzzFan1000 they actually can, the cpu or vrm would have to be modded, in combination with the needed microcode added to the bios. The problem is even when said and done, the 440lx chipset will downgrade those FC-PGA & 2+ to only run them at 66 mhz. I did to my socket 370 matx 440lx motherboard and used rom_py and modbin toolkit which you can find online.

AX3L is a 440LX meaning it will only do Mendocino Celerons and the 440LX can only do 66 MHz frontside buses max

Sorry to hear about the bad motherboard. I know one computer that I still have and still working is a Toshiba Satellite laptop with a Pentium 266 MHz CPU and 96 mb of RAM and has Windows 98 second edition and the laptop is from 1998.

I hate it when this happens. Got a older 2005 Gateway PC from a family-friend. Turns out it wouldn't turn on with the OEM power supply. Tried a working 300W power supply. Nope it stopped working and won't POST at all :(
