    .I am Turkish and live in İstanbul. I can speak German, English, French and also read the Ottoman Turkish (the old alphabet). I started learning German at the age of 10 and English at the age of 12, at school. I started learning French in 2012 at the French Cultural Center in Taksim. I learned to read the old alphabet by studying myself. There is no language that I particularly prefer among these languages. I also agree with your opinion you stated in the video.

      Hello Burcu!
      Wow!! So impressive 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 what made you start learning languages? Especially at that early age?
      Btw it's the best time to learn language is when you are kid.
      İ (Maria) speak English and Spanish. İ fully understand French but I'm not fluent speaking it. İ self learned how to write two alphabets in Japanese and currently learning Turkish. İ took a few lessons of german when i was younger and i found it so complicated i gave up. 😂😂😂
      Lieles has been doing really good learning spanish and turkish but he needs to practice more.
      Thank you for sharing your story and hope to meet you one day!

    The reason behind why Turkish people struggle learning English would be "language family difference" Turkish is considered in Altaic Language Family whereas English is Indo European one, so everything differs that you can imagine in a language:) Btw I can speak English, Turkish, Azerbaijani and German a lil bit. Love your videos guys very informative tbh, peace!

    That's something new to hear from us, it's interesting to hear that people speak English more in Bodrum than in Istanbul. Always thought people living in the capital city of a country will get more exposure to learn English more.
    But after hearing from the server you interviewed, it makes sense! People learn English from tourism. That's similar to Bali, not the capital city of Indonesia but Bali people are generally quite good with English because of the environment as many international tourists visiting and expats are living there.

    • @mariaandbryan
      @mariaandbryan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tht is a great comparison.
      Yes quite interesting indeed. I thought the same and that's why it was so shocking, but it totally makes sense

    That's interesting that in Istanbul, a lot of people don't speak English, but in small tourist towns they do. We can imagine it would be very important to know the language of the tourists who are visiting your town, and your economy is dependent on these tourists in the warm months. That waiter you met was a cool dude, and like how he learned English from all his customers.

    • @mariaandbryan
      @mariaandbryan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that is indeed true. We talked to some people in the street as well but audio was really bad and some of them told us that some people just learn English in the streets, by listening to others, by learning menus and scattering words...how amazing is that?
      Yet we saw a few i***ts making fun and being annoying that some couldn't just talk fluently.... that got us so upset.
      But anyway, we have to focus on the good, always on the good.

    Great topic. Many of us learn it in school as it is considered a language of reference. It’s also true that some countries feel that English speakers expect everyone to speak and understand it. It’s so great of you to acknowledge the efforts. Learning a language takes time and passion 🙂. When you flew the drone there was a dog next to you feeling so comfortable as if he was part of the family 😄.

    Considering language as a tool for communication, it has to be up to anyone if they want to be able to communicate more with others.
    If a country or city wants tourism, it will be useful to be ready for visitors speaking English.
    But going around the world expecting that others will speak your own language (being it English, French, Chinese or whatever) isn't the best behaviour. Yes, English is "universal" and easy enough to learn. But learning a few words in other languages, specially from those countries one visits, won't hurt. Quite the oposite, it will open more doors and help communicating with locals.
    Personally, I (Jordi) don't like much to see info in my own language when I travel. I rather "suffer" trying to understand a restaurant menu in the local language and "struggling" explaining myself with my needs in local language words. Come on, it's 2021, most of us travel with smartphones and internet connection: it's not that hard to open a translator and try to speak the local language.
    That being said, when you find locals who speak good English, it makes things so easy (too easy sometimes, that can be compared to how hard it was finding places and moving around before we all used Google Maps 😉)
    hahaha all this comment even before the premiere! i'll come back to comment more once I watch the video! :D

    • @mariaandbryan
      @mariaandbryan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love it! Totally agree! Love this message.
      You know how in Spain, outside Barcelona (i have to admit) we don't speak anything as a general rule, and it's sad because tourism is so big there, bit at the same time we shouldn't go visit other countries expecting people must speak Spanish, because we don't even do our own homework. (of course I'm generalizing)
      Anyway, it seems the video is creating a lot of expectations and many are commenting and it's great.
      We believe these are some of the conversations we need to have as a society to understand each other and grow.
      Thanks guys

    Loved the message behind this video. I really hate when expats and tourists don't bother to learn local languages and then treat locals like idiots for not being able to understand them. We experienced this so much in Vietnam and as we're both part-time English teachers, we understand how difficult it is for people to speak multiple languages. Locals would speak Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean AND English to deal with all of the tourist and business when the majority of expats could only speak one language. Luckily this wasn't the case with every expat we met, but it definitely makes us mad when we see it!

    Good topic. I live in Turkey in an area where a lot of people speak English, and feel it is important when you live in a country to at least try to do your best to speak the language. Also when you visit another country, to learn how to greet people, say please and thank you. I am English and when we moved to the US in the early 90s, a lot of Americans couldn’t understand what we were saying! I speak some Indonesian, from living there in my teens, a little German, French and Spanish from school and traveling and a little Russian from living in Moscow.
