WOW! My father is from Togo, West Africa and my mother is African American. I was raised in Togo, West Africa and let me tell you... this song reminds me so much of many West African songs that I heard growing up! Wow! I LOVE it! African cultural survival indeed.

In spite of the Middle Passage, the horrible conditions faced on the ships and the inhuman conditions faced in the "New World" and the attempt to remove Africans of their culture and heritage, our ancestors kept their culture! If that isn't beautiful and an example of spiritual survival, I don't know what is!

    Fawaka (whats up in suriname)
That is not allison hinds. When square one visited suriname (in 1998 or 1999) and performed at a concert they heard the song being perfomed by the original group ai sa si.
Ai sa si allowed Square One to perform the song and the rest is history... At beginning of the CD in full bloom Allsion Hinds says this is dedicated to the people of Suriname then she begins to sing the song. Whenever I go to a soca party Faluma is played and no one knows it is Surinamese!

I like it. I love the Square One version but I appreciate and enjoy being able to hear the "original." They're both good.

The scenery is from Surinam? looks just like Guyana. Suriname has one of the strongest ties to Africa. When I was younger we loved to hear stories of the Jukas (sp).

The song is written and possibly sung in this original by the singer sisa Agi (Agnes Nagi from Surinam). This is the original version. So far I have not found the correct lyrics, and their meaning. I´ve heard different things about the exact language and its meaning. Is it Saamaka, Nduka, Kromanti~? Is it about a girl or about a dove~?Does anyone know more~?

stinkyloo123 . we don't originally speak it. for us it had died out because we were not aloud to speak it. So we speak a language called sranang tongo.( a combination of many languages together. to know more you have got to learn more about Suriname history.
