  • This video is about a discussion I had with Brad Wartman from Air Power Services of Pensacola about the Kaeser Smart Pipe aluminum compressed air piping system that they installed in our new shop. Brad will go over some of the benefits of using this piping system as well as why they chose the style and size air compressor for my shop.

    I come from an experience of maintaining 8 heavy plant air compressors ranging from 600hp down to 300hp, it's nice to know and see what is available for production shops. In a previous life I would have called them "cute". I've worked with many of the same companies that you mention. Thank you for the video!

    Thanks for this. Man that compressor is quiet. When I had my shop going, I had a 7 1/2 hp dual stage with 80 gal tank. I used 3/4" copper tubing with dryers and oilers at four workstations.
    Before that I worked at an aerospace company that had a screw compressor that was powered by a natural gas converted ford 460 V8 outside under a shed. Man that thing screamed so loud that we would wait for it to finish its cycle before going outside to our other building.

    Good discussion. I enjoyed learning more about air lines. I too have used PVC in the past with thankfully no issues. I learned about the hazards of PVC and replaced it immediately. To back up a little, I am now a retired homeowner user of air and have a small hobby-type wood shop. When providing air where needed, I decided on PEX. 1. It is easy to snake around wherever I wanted to provide a drop. 2. It has none of the hazards of PVC. 3. I had a sufficient amount of leftover material after re-plumbing the entire water supply to my home. If there is an issue, I can totally replace the air lines with remaining material in less than 2 hours since I have the crimp tools.

    Old school and think 3" and under nothing beats copper tubing for up to 135 #'s. Black pipe & even galvanised rust. At a candy company we had a ten million dollar robotic line that had over 500 air solenoids. They had a quality refrigerated dryer just for this 200' line and had some kind of dryers on each end that changed color towards needed replacement of dryer element. At the large hospital/research center that I retired from they started to purchase only Krasner air compressors ( except for special medical air compressors ). They paid a contractor to perform PM'S on them and the knes supplying HVAC equipment ran 24/7. They were smart enough to install two at every location where only one ran at a time. Computer would switch lead/lag on them every werk.

This video made me think about the piping system (HD Welding shop for mining and earthmoving items) i like to have clean air for my Plasma, Air gouge, impact, needlescalers etc. I was simply going to weld some tube together with up and down hooks for drop down to get the piping crap to dont get into the fittings. Mate of mine installed it in his picture framing workshop (here it's called Unipipe). Very good looking installation, but shortly after installation, one of the 25mm connections burst open at 125psi and scared the living crap out of everyone. Probably due to poor installation, but a good reminder of how much energy is stored in these systems. Me, I just ran 3/4" pex with 1/2" drops to the machines. Would probably be OK with normal polyethylene pipe also, but would not run PVC for air - it shatters when it fails.

    I know the compressor is Branded Kaeser which is a German company which a lot of people do not like but i do have to say that they are a very good compressor compared to the majority and do run a lot quieter than most. I am from the UK and Kaeser are Branded HPC in the UK, and having been trained on Various brands of compressor they are basically all the same, some a little noisier than others, but the difference is in the controllers, and this is where a lot of the problems arise with screw or scroll compressors. Now i have found that the Sigma controller on Kaeser/HPC compressors the most reliable, as some like Atlas Copco and Mark Compressors including Boge Compressors tend to be a little short on quality, there are forever glitches in them, and replacements do not come cheap.

    Of course other systems like pvc or black pipe etc will absolutely work and are likely cheaper, I feel like people fail to realize the cost of the equipment and the cost to repair a cnc lathe or mill. We aren’t talking about filling bike tires and basketballs…. A bad air system can cost thousands in repairs over the years. A piece of rust or trash from the air system tears up a seal in the pneumatic headstock or tool changer, you know that repair is going to be at least $1000 for a tech to fly out and tear it apart to fix it. If a high quality air system like this one prevents that from happening only one time in his shop, it paid for itself already. Adam I think your doing the exact things you should be, spend what you can afford to and do it right, it will save you time and money in the long run.

    Whenever I get around to building a house, it's going to be plumbed for central vacuum and compressed air. I'd want that air to be clean enough for breathing from a scuba tank, because among other things, I'd be using it for airbrushes. What do you need to add to this kind of compressor to make dive-quality air?

    • @kuebbisch

      Scuba Diver here: Generally for breathing air: water and oil separator and then a filter with molecular sieves and activated charcoal or some type of all-in-one filter called triplex filter (Bauer P0 or P23 for example).
      I run the opposite way here at home, I just have a scuba compressor and I use a scuba tank and pressure reducer (old first stage scuba regulator) to power my limited amount of pneumatic tools to change car tires, inflate the tires, run a grinder or cut-off wheel or just for a blow gun.

Who doesn’t love seeing 200 pounds of steel pipe rip itself off a wall!? And the shrapnel is so much more effective than pvc! Weeeeee! Stop waiting for your coworkers to fall asleep so you can try the hand in warm water trick! Just let your air system exploding across the shop do a far better job of getting them to piss themselves. When my father built his body shop he designed the paint booth and the compressor housing. The compressors were on a pad outside of the building. He had the brick layer build the building the appropriate of 3.5 fee with the top row of brick were the brick turned on their side to let air into the tiny building. He put s peaked roof on it with and shingle top. There was enough room to walk around the compressors in case they needed service. The duel piston double compressors in the building ran 10 hours a day M-F for more than ten years with out needing major service. The oil and other things needed to be looked at but man those thing lasted forever and many days. They were rebuilt once after the ten or so year mark. My uncle, father, and I put all the black pipe in the building for the runs. There were dryers and filters for every work station. They came straight off the pipe perpendicular to the floor. Sorta like the Kaiser rep talked about with particulate. It was an awesome system through and through. The noise was very little and could not be heard outside of 20 feet or so from the compressor building. Behind the body shop were condos so those people would have been really not happy to hear the compressors. So the little building was pretty genius. They never got wet, snowed on, or what ever. There was a massive wooden door in the front in case you needed to replace them or take them out. He accidentally piped them in series at first lol. Then he figured out parallel is best to make sure one is not killed before the other. OK enough rambling. I am happy for you and glad to see your shop is coming together.

    Good timing for me on this video. I have a new Kaeser Air Tower that's not yet installed. I first saw an Air Tower at a trade show. Ran so quiet. I just had to have one for my shop.
    Brad certainly knows his stuff, and he's very good at explaining it. The more air tank capacity the better. Less compressor cycling.

    • @stanpritchard7436
      @stanpritchard7436 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tank capacity is only a buffer not the amount you require, the amount you require comes in CFM,, cubic feet per minute, however this can be controlled by a regulator, so work out what CFM your machines required ie: 6.5 bar is the usual pressure an machine may need like a CNC for instance, then set your Regulator which should be installed directly after your receiver tank/ or buffer tank, set it to approx 7.5 bar. that will keep the whole system at 7.5 bar, so if you had a 10bar compressor your system will not require that so you control the system by the regulator, which will only let out of the tank 7.5 bar so you have a good buffer, at 10 bar, and then CFM will not come into the equation also set the pressure differential on your compressor from what kaeser normally set at 0.5 bar, to 2.0 bar. therefore your compressor will not be running on load for very long and will probably spend more time off load therefore saving energy, and running costs.

    Adam, I question why you didn't complete the loop of the air line over the roller door
    I assume air flows like water, (as in an irrigation system) if you design a system like you have for air in the shop, in water the air/water reaching the last point in the circuit will be less than the first point
    If you complete the loop so air/water can have equal pressure throughout you will find you have a better system overall,
    Can you please explain to me why you terminated the system EITHER side of the roller door instead of putting in a few extra metres of piping to have a better system

      A loop is is a very good design and creates even flow to all distribution points. If one day his demand is such that this needed then it can certainly be added. This particular installation was designed with 1" tube which is more than adequate to supply his fixtures. There really was no need to spend the extra time and material on a loop system. I see that this system has a filter & water / oil separation filter and stainless drain etc.
    But the remote storage tank on the roof of the office has me curious.
    Will water vapour out of the air condense inside the remote storage tank as the air cools, and pool in the bottom, requiring the tank being drained at the end of each day before going home to reduce corrosion inside the storage tank?
    I can see climbing a ladder every afternoon to drain the remote storage tank, becoming a big bear within the first week.
    Maybe different if it was a remote servo operated drain from an electrical switch or some mechanical lever and rod device from down below, with a piped drain externally.
    Just something that I am left wondering about.

    • @d00dEEE
      @d00dEEE 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm guessing that the big condensor on the side of the compressor (previous video) has already cooled the air by the time it hits the outlet, and the storage tank only sees cool dry air so it needs no auxiliary condensation handlers. Like I said, I'm guessing, but that's the impression I got of the reason for the fancy all-in-one compressor.

      @@d00dEEE I was hoping something along the same lines, but would like to know for sure.
      Here downunder all pressure vessels are only good for 10 years, unless with the larger ones where it’s not viable to junk them, they have inspection openings, and can be lead shot “rumbled” to remove rust & scale internally, then pressure tested and stamped for another 10 years.

    • @davidsellars646
      @davidsellars646 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I asked that in the previous video. An answer indicated that wasn't a problem. Like you, I would be concerned that there will be water vapor and there will be corrosion. My idea would be a line from the bottom of the tank to the sink with a 1/4 turn valve to allow for easier draining. If water is determined not to be a problem, this is overkill. I would rather have it than not.

    • @tweake7175
      @tweake7175 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I keep telling people to NEVER use PVC for air. There are so many things that can happen. As they say, if it gets too,cold, it gets brittle. If it’s lightly by smacked by something, it explodes. But if it gets too warm, it gets soft. Then it grows a bubble and explodes. PVC gets soft enough to easily bend at just 140 degrees f. That’s not as hot as you think it is. If the joint isn’t cleaned and glued properly, it will blow apart. If it isn’t supported well, it can blow. But a big problem is the varying pressure in air, because air is, after all, compressible. Water does t vary that way. PVC is not good with a sudden rise in pressure.
    I’ve seen every kind of PVC blowout. It’s not pretty. Some people claim they been using it for years without a problem. Well, good luck for them. Don’t follow their stupidity. You won’t be as lucky.
    Also don’t use iron pipe. Water in the system will rust it over time. Copper is fine. I’ve done thousands of feet of that.

    Threaded pipe can easily have drip legs installed, just as is standard practice in natural gas usage that can allow space for stuff to fall out of the gas flow. Plumbed a lot of gas lines and not much beats copper and compression fittings,mean handle a pressure well in access of what standard compressors are putting out. Actually seeing an increase in PEX usage in air systems as it’s more cost effective that rigid options and is much safer than PVC; don’t use PVC it just doesn’t hold up and can low if impacted. If you’re using PEX make sure you’re using PEX-A and not PEX-B or PEX-C.

    • @paulcopeland9035
      @paulcopeland9035 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      PEX doesn't meet code. Sorry for the annoying "code" reference, but it is truth! I know PEX and it seems you know the product, but it is not approved for high pressure air lines. I know people are using more and more of it but it is sketchy under high air pressure and susceptible to UV! It is best not to trust the stuff for this application.

    I have always run drops off the overhead main line straight up for about six to eight inches, two ells coming down, to wherever they needed to go.
    That's just in case the dryer quit working.
    Also, I always put a dirt leg on every drop with a ball valve at the bottom - especially at sensitive equipment.
    Dropping straight down off an overhead main in just asking for trouble, and those dirt legs can give you a quick health check up on your system.
