Sichon (สิชล), Thailand - This is one of those pristine beach villages, that almost unseen Thailand, and what I loved so much about it was that it’s almost completely non-commercialized.
Ok, so my wife and I were spending some time in Nakhon Si Thammart, southern Thailand, visiting family. Nakhon Si Thammart happens to be one of my favorite provinces in Thailand for Thai food, known for being spicy and harsh, and you’ll find some amazing cuisine.
One day, we drove over to the tiny beach community village of Sichon (สิชล), I had heard about a small local fish market, and I was excited to check it out. We arrived at about 8 am, and it was one of those place where I got so excited because it was picture perfect. But then I saw all the empty trays of fish and I thought I had arrived too late because all the fish were gone. Luckily, an Aunty explained that the fishing boats hadn’t yet arrived, to my relief.
The fish market itself was beautiful, filled with friendly people, small delicious Thai street food snacks, and scenery to dream about. We had some patongko (ปาท่องโก๋) - 10 THB ($0.28), Chinese doughnuts and Khanom krok (ขนมครก) - 20 THB ($0.58), coconut griddle cakes, for breakfast, as we waited for the boats to come in.
Unfortunately the catch in Sichon (สิชล) today wasn’t the best, they were mostly small fish and nothing too exciting. But I did notice an Aunty selling some eels, and that caught my attention. The next thing you know, I was on the back of her motorbike, and we went back to her house to cook spicy chili eel (ผัดเผ็ดปลาไหล). It was truly an amazing experience seeing her cook the eel at her home in the village countryside.
For the rest of the morning we drove around Sichon, enjoying the stunning beach coastal scenery and finding a few interesting things along the way. They don’t really have many restaurants to choose from, so finally we found a small Halal eater on the side of the beach and went for it. Again, the Aunty’s were extremely friendly, and we ordered a few simple Thai dishes to eat along with the eel.
Sichon (สิชล) is a true off the beaten path destination in Thailand, and what I loved so much about it is that it’s so non-commercialized, peaceful and quiet, and the people in the community are so friendly and hospitable. It’s one of the most memorable places I’ve traveled in Thailand in a long time!
Sichon (สิชล), Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand

Your microexpressions when you actually don't like something but you're too polite or nice to say something negative about it are both interesting and very funny

Mark Wiens when I watch your Thai videos it really makes me proud to be part Thai because as a young child I seriously took it for granted but you remind me to really appreciate the community amongst the Thai people especially country people.
it makes me remember good moments with Yāy just spending the morning helping her pick jackfruit and coconut then just pigging out on fruit and having such a fun time and building such an amazing relationship.
I thank you mark for your videos and your open book personality to a diverse variety of people and culture 👍❤

Mark's videos are getting deeper and deeper to true meaning of cooking and foods. He hit the right point about what nature would give you everyday. The real life in a community and neighborhood got so much touch from Mark and his camera. No need to sugar coat everything in life. Thanks again.

So funny how the aunty at the restaurant was surprised and asked if you knew how to eat everything. They're indeed nice people. Will definitely visit there one day ! Thanks for the video Mark :)

Mark, just want to say I love your videos. Sichon looks very friendly, peaceful and relaxing. I also want to say that I really love how you lift up Ying and publicly praise her every chance you get. It is so refreshing. I hope to start teaching ESL in Bangkok in the next couple of years to serve the people of Thailand so I am really studying your stuff so I don't feel like such a tourist when I go. Bless you.

Someday when I get a chance to go to Thailand I would love it if I could have Mark tour me to places like these. Not necessarily the tourist heavy attractions in Bangkok or Phuket but small coastal towns like these where you can get fresh ingredients and awesome food while enjoying the breeze of the sea. Its just simply nostalgic at how I remember when I was a kid going to see my Grandmother who lives near the ocean as well. And I would remember that if enough people who lived in the city who are born locals of that town come back for the weekend that the whole town just celebrates and just goes all out fishing. Just to serve all the people who came back and turn into a really big occasion. It was always a feast of clams, fish, crabs, lobsters, prawns, and geoducks.

LifewithAnnaBee I made a cross country drive a few years ago and I met an old white couple in west Texas who invited me to their home for some home cooking. They were super nice. If wasn't in a hurry to get to California I would've taken them up on it. There are plenty of friendly, trusting people in the U.S. Not all Thais are great (I'm Thai) and not all Americans are bad.

things with america ive noticed from a nordic country like finland is that americans are puppets who work really hard its reminds me of how capitalism thrives and how they are the biggest superpower of the world but they just need to take it slow imo but again there is good and bad people but thts my problem with america

LifewithAnnaBee I completely agree. You usually have to be the right skin color or ethnicity to be treated that well in the States. While living in Europe even as a brown person, I’ve received unbelievable hospitality compared to what I experienced in my home country, the U.S.

    • @pillowblanket8173

LifewithAnnaBee US is not that great. There’s other countries out there where life is better in terms of living very positive and enjoying life better . The smallest things we see in other countries are the healthiest things to live by. People in other countries are by far more friendly than people in US.

this is another video that i am waiting for! the pristine white beach in sichon! i used to drive past sichon while on the way to donsak for a ferry ride to samui in 2006. the coconut plantation really reminds me on samui. the small clams are one of my favourite dishes and they look beautiful. i can say that sichon has a significant Muslim population like in Krabi and Phang Nga. besides, the pure coconut milk used in making the khanom krok is rich in oil and thus the seller does not need to use other cooking oil to make the coconut pancake. the spear is traditionally used in breaking the aged coconut fruit for copra which is used in making both coconut milk and oil. such an interesting video!
