Tamkenat, one of the biggest reasons PTV used to have exceptional dramas with riveting storylines while our current private channels don't is that PTV used to hire professional writers and never compromised on quality. Actresses from the PTV era have also mentioned that PTV had strict guidelines. They were not allowed to show men casually slapping women around. Actors and actresses had to prove their mettle before they got an opportunity to work on PTV. In the last 15 to 20 years, private channels have taken over and they want to prioritize profit. They know their target audience is regressive women and men. They started adapting the novels of digest writers to build their brand. If you have had the misfortune of reading these digest writers, 95% of them write sexist and misogynistic content. Almost every story of theirs revolves around this narrative that a woman who tolerates abuse is naik perveen and the one who bothers standing up for herself and her rights is overly westernized and evil. Almost all their stories have toxic men who either kidnap women to coerce them into marriage or threaten to do it and they are depicted as ideal men. Immigrant parents who raise their daughters abroad are also shown as ideal maa baap for deceiving their daughters into coming back to Pakistan and forcibly marrying them to a man in a village and when their daughters are understandably upset and angry, their dehati husbands physically and emotionally abuse them into becoming their servants. The novels end when the heroines learn their lesson by accepting to be inferior to the men in their families. The toxicity that you're criticizing in our dramas was introduced by digest writers. Earlier we used to have progressive dramas where men and women weren't reduced to mere stereotypes and caricatures. This problem will persist until we encourage progressive writers and give them opportunities the way PTV used to back in the day.
Omg. Much needed. U said everything that I wanted to say. This drama Wabal is so wrong for so many reasons. The girl wanted to get higher education & build a life for herself & parents banned college & made her marry to a incompatible boy. Dad is though not old old ( considering that eldest daughter is college age) but soooo weak & nazuk andaam. Gets heart attack because jahil mohalla ladies were gossiping because his daughter had to go to a police station & he knew his daughter was innocent. Her friend had used her. Wow!

I don’t waste my time watching Pakistani/dramas/films as it’s always repetitive and completely false, the acting is so dire, it’s should be classified as comedy.. ! The standard/contents bear no actual facts to reality and dear god, don’t they just drag on and on..How can there be a moral in the concluding episode, when we have completely executed our values/ethics/morals. .? I’m not even from Pakistan my parents were but came over as kids. I still agree with everything you said as I saw ptv dramas and the crap we have now with some tiny gravels of good content. I’m sick of the star plus copy especially the sisters and one man stories and the dad heart attack or stroke and paralyzed narritive does my head in. If I like a drama I have to now watch on 2x cos it’s normally getting dragged and flash backs for sake of greed of the channel .. so u are 💯. Btw awesome awesome job on stand up girl !! Its really a lame excuse that "People want to watch such content". People will watch what you will make them watch, as simple as that. Media has the tools which they can use to educate people or at least entertain them in non toxic ways. I agree that not all entertainment content is for learning or educating, but it can be made less negative. Writers have greater part to play.
