That “only use pen” tip really works. I’ve been using only pens my whole life and it’s so easy to control their thickness once you get used to it, although that’s easier with cheaper pens. It’s not something that requires anything expensive and shading is much easier!
i try explain that to my friends but they literally don’t want to understand anything i’m saying💀😭

I prefer drawing with a ballpoint pen because it’s quick, I can’t go back, and it makes my art feel more authentic to me. It also forces me to accept what I’ve drawn and just try to incorporate mistakes. Once I accidentally drew a line over my sheep, so now my sheep has multiple palm leaves infromt and surrounding it. I say mistakes give art _✨personality✨_
But also ballpoint pens give you a lot of leniency. It's very easy to control the darkness of your strokes, so you can lightly sketch before committing to darker lines.

Here's something that's helped me learn: trying to draw in other peoples' styles, especially when you're not happy with your own. From my own experience, it helps me find ways to draw different features on a character that I would never think to draw before. For example, noses. In a more anime style, it can be a single small line, but in more realistic styles a line defines almost the whole shape of the nose, vs the simple curve in cartoons.
yes! and even if you keep trying different styles, you will eventually find a way you like to draw certain things.
Another tip is redrawing the same face. Over and over till your happy with it. You start to breakdown your drawing and what you don't like about it (nose, eyes, lips ect..) and you start to draw certain features differently. It can change your perspective, *and* help you find your style :)
I was waiting for Kooleen to show up

13:21 we really just watched Sam go through the 5 stages of grief here lmao
14:10 If I had to do that every time I draw a face, I would faint...
I'd love to see Sam do the 100 heads challenge. It would be cool to see how he does with various face shapes/expressions/etc.
The second I was birthed into the world I came with a free notebook and pen, drawing accurate copies of the Mona Lisa. I don’t get how these people can claim that one CANT be born with the talent of art 🙄
This is satire.

13:44 my art teacher makes us do grid drawings all the time... its disgusting
I could never do grids
12:06 actually that makes alot of sense- now that I think about it (this isn't my first time watching this) your stlye actually looks quite similar to the spider man into the spider verse style.. and that's actually really cool!
13:24 sure but is that really the way you want to draw? That for me will just kill my motivation to do art immediately. I respect the accuracy but I hate restrictions. Loomis head model is still the best for me. It doesn’t have to be perfectly accurate, but have fun drawing in the progress is what matters for me
The grid technique confuses me to another level. It makes me feel limited to what I can draw, I think it's more of a fun little challenge for the more advanced artists and not for the beginners like me
Finally
Someone like me
Like he said, this is an incredibly flawed technique. You can only draw the face from one angle, you can’t change the proportions, you can’t do anything! Not recommended, like Sam said, learn the actual structure instead. It’ll help you so much.
I never liked the tutorials where they say to make a punch of lines. I hate that they teach you to draw with a ruler, because everything even slightly drawn without guidlines will ruin everything. The thing like "the body is 8 heads long" or "divide the face into 8 pieces to see where the features should be" piss me off so much. You shouldn't desperately measure everything with a ruler to make art. It's art. You should have fun with it
@@isThisTakenToo--- Well, I would say that the tip about the body being roughly seven-eight heads tall is actually pretty useful. Keyword, ROUGHLY seven-eight heads tall. Don’t measure it precisely, but having an understanding of basic proportions is really helpful.
I think those types of videos are meant for complete beginners or people who aren’t confident enough to start drawing. It’s kind of like giving a kid a coloring book for the first time. It’s just meant to introduce them to the very basics and prove that they can actually do something, no matter how simple it is. Once they actually get comfortable drawing, then they move on to learning actual techniques and theories.
Yes! The whole “embrace your art style” is absolutely reuse along with using reference! I’ve recently discovered that my art style reflects animes like Demon Slayer and Pokémon, and cartoons like The Owl House and SpongeBob!
3:00 They sound like Sona Draws stuff!
I love how I automatically knew that this was Kooleen 💀🤚 2:23
*Especially the last part 💀💀*
Tiktok’s intensity honestly terrifies me sometimes haha, one reason I love your content is you have a very soothing voice and good space in your talking making it easier to digest and understand, thanks a bunch 😊
This series Has really gotten me more into art and understanding what to do. Your tips are helping me out with my digital art And some traditional art too. we have fails and don’t have fails in our artwork. I have finally got more into digital Art because of you!
maybe it's just me but i actually find tracing useful when you're just beginning to learn how to draw certain body parts it helps you understand and study the shading, structure and learn to simplify complicated shapes after that you can try practicing using references but yeah i don't agree with tracing without studying and learning
Nah ur right abt that, as long as ya dont say ya didnt trace and its 100 percent ur art, and claim it as ur own, its alright.
when I was starting I would usually Frankenstein a bunch of references and then trace over them in shapes to simplify! It was so helpful and allowed me to really breakdown the pieces I was trying to replicate
Go for the basics instead of tracing just doesn't help it makes your brain dependent
Tracing someone else's art = bad.
Tracing your own hand = good.
No idea why this dude has such a big problem with it...
Plus they literally admitted to tracing (which they don't really have to do if it's their own image)
@@monokuma6659 it's not the tracing that is bad, it's the claiming the art you've traced as your own that is bad. Like, tracing a whole artwork and putting it out there as 'yours/mine'.
Imo, tracing frankenstein monster is more original. Like, tracing a certain part of the body with a picture, then tracing a different part of the body with a different picture.
2:42 that’s kooleen! She’s like my second favorite art youtuber after you!
7:45 but I don't understand why people say I'm lucky I'm an artist? It isn't just pure talent. As well as, I'm just beginning my journey, and I know.. almost nothing about art. I've been drawing for only 3-4 years, and I still need work. Like this person, and Sam said, it's not all talent!
and I was not born with this "talent". I don't know, but I just do not understand why people say I have amazing talent, and that "oh! I wish I was born with that talent!" even though that's almost nothing about it...?
Sam, I honestly can't stop watching you and because of your videos I fell in love with art again
You make art seem like a beautiful thing whereas other make it seem worthless and discourage ppl
Thanks for your content and motivation for others to pursue their art work
May god bless you

2:31 Jesus Christ Sam stop exposing us-

4:13 in my art lessons at school my teacher actually dedicates lessons for us to draw from a reference photo so we can focus on where the shadows and highlights are and why they're there. It also helps us with proportions! :D
As an older artist I can appreciate many of these tips; but also find the punchy and aggressive stuff rather ridiculous; and even being older, I’ve got lots to still learn with my art.My lifetime probably wont be enough time to learn everything that I’d like to. Thanks Sam;good video!
13:52 Sam reaction 🤣🤣🤣
With the art books, I have trouble finding them so I just use professional coloring books and reference off of them. The main one I use is my Demon Slayer coloring book :)
I was taught the grid method when learning how to draw an accurate self portrait in school. I was never a big fan of it, but it does help with scaling from a small picture to a larger canvas.

**cough** **cough**
Sam? 😏😏
im a huge fan of making my own CSP stamps for things i need for one drawing and then just keeping them for when i might want them again - i made my own flower stamps because its tedious to do every single one - i made a signature stamp instead of drawing my name crooked every single time
i fully love the idea of making your own stamp if its something you struggle with drawing repeatedly, whether its lashes or hand sketches in perspective or whatever, try it! it doesnt have to be for a webtoon or comic, it can be just for one drawing and who knows, maybe youll need something similar in one of the next drawings.
much love - it aint cheating, it aint hard, just diy!
I accept everybody in the world as people who have the same feelings and importance but I have to say this, protect this man
2:05 I do use my own hands as references, but I block-sketch the shapes, the cylinders, etc. so I can also learn a little. Yesterday I drew a hand using only the reference instead of drawing over it and then lining it.
8:16 das exactly how I pop out when I see that Sam posted a new video

Fr tho, you gave me the motivation to draw. i’fe been struggling with art block for so long, but your videos gave me the idea to just start drawing. i started drawing again without any particular goal, and just kept going until i got something good. thank you, i love drawing again
:))
You seem like a very calm and nice person. Watching your vids is very calming tysm!❤️❤️❤️
The thing about references at 3:58 onward is interesting because all of my art assessments this year have required me to use references; like, if I don’t include a reference in the submission I get marked down for it.
Not trying to contradict - in fact, I think this is a good demonstration of how the attitude has changed.
16:34 dude that just extremely motivated me..
I told my parents I want to become a Digital artist.. a comic artist and I asked them for buying me a tablet.. they really told me what if i never get succeeded after spending money.. i won't blame them, we really is going through some bad shits.. but yeah, then after I was almost lost, almost gave up this dream, and i even told myself that I won't become success looking at my current art level...
😂😂😂 It's funny... But now i feel like i need to work more and i feel like i also can do it..♥️
Don't give up on your dream
I am not gonna stop loving art
Edit : sorry if i spoke like boomer
I love how on every trust the process Sam just looks mindblown in confusion until the end, where he’s even more confused about how it worked 😂
The erasing tip is so good, i used to take forever doing sketches cuz id keep erasing and erasing, but then i started a sketchbook with one rule, *no erasing*. Yes, some stuff does look messy but i’ve improved so much in such a short amount of time
11:27 those drawings are good, but they're also heavily referenced (traced?) from others. i'd recognize that tadashi sketch by jin kim from anywhere. i hope the tiktoker gave credit
I told my art teacher last year to throw out all her cheap brushes or I wouldn’t paint bc I hate them sm, she did and now she has thanked me for telling her to do so lol, a lot of kids found it easier to paint as well so that was also a plus :D
r/thathappened
7:54 Sam why do you look like you’re a picture!?😭😂
the moment you said " she can do it, i can do it and you can do it" hit me hard and motivated me so much. Thank you Sam I'll never stop practicing learning and learning to improve for my art

5:43 everyone told me a pen would effect my hand and my art really badly, so I stopped drawing with a pen for years ;_; still trying to get back to it
I’m so proud of myself because I drew an actually nice hand completely free hand, no tracing my own hand or anything :D
I just wanna share that :}

Hello Sam! I am a beginner artist and just recently started watching your videos! And they are amazing and are so much help! Your art is amazing!
Seeing peoples improvement over time of any skill is always so inspiring and makes me a little emotional!

I am the very beginner ,like I only draw doodles and small things and I can't find anything much helpful from randomly going through tik took and other things, but this video really helps , cause a person is there to review all these art ideas and it's great and the advices given by him is very helpful . As I watch, I get an idea on how to improve my drawing skill 🤩

16:18 my exact expression lmaoo practice for years is literally worth it 😭😭
My new nickname for Sam is literally "Sensei", because he is my sensei in art world, and also because he's always talking about the skull of his enemy and how he's gonna come find us💀
I really like your vids. Its funny, helpful and your English is so understandable, it helps me in learning the language😁
Totally agree with the reference part. I'm super noob in drawing but I use it as a form of meditation since my mind goes blank and just 100% focused on drawing the next line. After years of just drawing random things I still use a single different reference for every object I wanna draw on the same artboard just to reflect my thoughts on something. Also learned that art will NEVER be perfect to "your" eyes (or at least to me) no matter how you tweak smol details here and there but the result is totally satisfying and "enough" in the end.
EDIT: I'm also new to the channel so sorry if I repeated something already said
9:14 Never thought I'd hear “See, this is why I love TikTok” from Sam. This truly is an enemies to lovers story, huh?
