I think the Sueno en la Floresta and Julia Florida if not many of the maestros great works are all Top Tier compositions. Worthy to be held beside all the great masters of any instrument.
Setting aside the exhausting diabolic technique, this performance is uncomparable. Nothing is ever unintentional with John Williams. This is pure controlled emotion - beauty-art - his phrasing is moving and his meta-articulation unbeatable.
This video is one of the two that got me into the world of music, back when I was 14... I will forever be grateful to Mr. Williams ...And Barrios, the best and most dramatic classical guitar composer who ever was...
John Williams can play any piece as if he was playing Wonderwall. Piece of cake for him. One of those humans that came from outter space I guess. I am happy they sent him here.
Gracias otra vez.
John is the best guitar player of all times. Every single piece he plays becomes the best interpretation instantly. Segovia himself recognised him as the king when he was only 18 years old.
I am Paraguayan and very proud of it. I think that you should not forget that Agustín Pío Barrios was the best classical guitar player of all time and one of the best musicians as well. Barrios maybe in that time did not have all the tv show and broadcast etc that the artists of today have. Many of his works are exams in guitar schools in Germany. Country of the greatest musicians of all time like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and many others.
If only the station or camera company would ever get permission to release this in its original quality - this is clearly one of the great guitar performances - certainly in the case of Barrios' great work.

I have it. Slightly better video and audio... But only DVD resolution, maybe whs
John Williams. The God of classical guitar. And everybody else can just suck it up, be envious and post nasty comments. John Williams - are you ever going to get better than this?
The video quality is piss poor but I'm 58 and when a young music student at Sydney Conservatorium this tape, the tape had Williams playing other Barrios pieces at what seems to be the same recital/concert did the rounds of all of us guitar students. While guys like Bream really have you on the edge of your seat 'cause they fly so close to the wind you wonder if today they'll fall but Williams gives you absolute confidence and power. I freely admit to spending many an hour in front of the mirror getting my right hand as close to his as I could, and the difference in sound is really noticeable and well worth the extra effort. His left hand is his safety net. Failsafe !!
its a shame that the quality of the video is not better, the clarity and crispness of williams technique is just perfect and to watch it close up is truly breathtaking, clean , very clean, thanks for this post
The introduction always makes me cry, I suppose with admiration for the genius of Barrios who is able to create amazing works of art like this. Like Albeniz who created Seviile, this piece was inspired by his catholicism. This would sound amazing transcribed for lead guitarist and bass player.
I never knew minecraft steve was so damned good at guitar lol. In all seriousness though, Williams is absolutely brilliant. I can't say just how grateful I am to my guitar teacher who gave my 15 year old self 'The Great Paraguayan'
If some of you guys would buy CDs and listen to them with good HiFi-gear instead of watching badly compressed youtube-videos and listening to them with poor PC-speakers, you would find, that the John Williams-recordings have international standard and his tone and interpretations are really great and ageless ! One of the great players of our time.
Williams extremely faithful to the only recording we have of Barrios playing it himself. In fact, Barrios plays it a bit faster with absolutely no rubato in the allegro as well.
When you think about it, one the strikes of genius of Williams' career was introducing the wide public to the music of Barrios. Surely that contributed to making the classical guitar into a more popular instrument at the time.
Does anyone noticed that He play slurs in 3rd movement in different note than in other his recordings? Its awesome. I noticed it with carefully listening and my learning piece 😊 He make it descending, later ascending in newer recordings. For me is easier slur ascending in this piece
Saludos.
When you listen to the ones that made music their life passion then learn to open your ears and listen carefully because much is being conveyed in the form of music!!! Just listen !!!!
I've never been able to find out where Williams got this version but it is the best edition that I have heard. It might be from Jason Waldron (Australian guitarist that transcribed Barrios from his recordings in the 70s). I play this version and had a hand written photocopy that was allegedly written out by Williams. I have put it into "Finale" so if you like I can send it to you. If you don't have finale you can download the free viewer to read and print finale files on your browser.

Filomena Moretti's is my favorite "non-metronomic" version. I have been trying to learn the tempo offset myself, however, so I am watching a number of different versions right now... If only my internet connection was a little faster.
I really like Azabagic's version too. However, I think calling Willam's version "rubbish" is a bit harsh. He's certainly one of the world's best guitarists. Just because he has mainstream success and recognition doesn't mean that guitarists can't appreciate him. I know it is our tendency to favor more obscure guitarists, but you can't take anything from Williams' success.
perhaps the greatest piece of music ever written for the guitar played by the master
¡¡¡VIVA PARAGUAY CARAJO!!!
I think the Sueno en la Floresta and Julia Florida if not many of the maestros great works are all Top Tier compositions. Worthy to be held beside all the great masters of any instrument.
100% agree
Setting aside the exhausting diabolic technique, this performance is uncomparable. Nothing is ever unintentional with John Williams. This is pure controlled emotion - beauty-art - his phrasing is moving and his meta-articulation unbeatable.
Azabajic’s performance is superior.

When Maestro John Williams plays, you don't see him.
You see The Composer.
With The Eyes of Your Ears.
Truly a masterpiece for the guitar and Williams must have being born to complete its finish.
John Williams can play any piece as if he was playing Wonderwall. Piece of cake for him. One of those humans that came from outter space I guess. I am happy they sent him here.

uncomparable, barrios is not a musician, he is a poet on the guitar
