Thank you! I had the same issue and called lots of shops and they all tried to convince me this wasn't the problem and said it was going to cost me a lot to fix it. We bought a second hand one, replaced it and now I have no issues with the steering wheel! So thank you for this video, it saved me lots of money!

@@TheSavageGarage I called 4 garages in my area ( I live in the Netherlands ). They all kind of laughed at me ( maybe because I am a woman ) when I said I saw this video and asked them whether this could fix the problem ( a neighbour of mine has the same car and also had this problem in the past and also replaced it and it did the trick ). They all said they had to look at it, and that it could have many causes, but that this pump change wouldn't fix the problem. Today I called them all back to tell them it díd fix the problem. I can't help but think they all tried to get lots of money from me for repair ór they just didn't have any knowledge about this. Well... long story short: thanks! ( It was a hassle to get to the screw in the back, because we didn't have an electric screwdriver like you. It took quite some time, but with pushing the plastic cover with plenty of force, we managed to get enough space in between, so we could get the screwdriver in )

My Ex's car had the same issue but changing the motor is just one of many things that can be done to fix the steering motor failure, a bad car battery and badly wired aftermarket radio in my experience on her car were the issue and the steering wheel failure persisted even with a different motor.
That being said there are newer motors for these Punto's without the Tyco relay's, I swapped out the old style motor and the new style steering motor on her car, that paired with a great Varta battery and rewiring the radio to the cigarette lighter ignition and problem solved. The only time i noticed the issue return was when i bought her car off her as a little runner for £320 and decided to put my 10" sub in the car, that dragged the battery voltage low enough to cause a steering wheel failure, i just drive the car a little hard and again that resolved the issue. I hope this helps someone out there

The facelifted Mk2 Punto has a different power steering motor without the two relays that often fail on the pre-facelifted models, the later motors are more reliable however what shortens the life of the motor is using the City mode all the time or driving the car with a weak battery. Regardless of the motor design, it's a very cheap fix anyway and it's maintenance free, there is no power steering pump and no need to buy fluid for the system. Vauxhalls also have electric power steering.

In the 14 months I owned it it was fucked with one problem or another for half of the time. I did about 14,000 miles the whole time I owned it. The car was scrap at 70,000. In contrast I have done over 160,000 miles in my Toyota and have only had minor problems like the water pump, an alternator fault and I had to replace the clutch and recently I treated some rust and rebuilt the rear suspension and changed a few brake lines.
