Blood Ravens! Dawn of War Space Marine Chapter Lore and Painting tutorial!

As 40k is going through a bit of a lull I thought I'd take the chance to paint a random space Marine chapter, as well as tell you a little bit of the lore behind them! I've done this in the past and it's good to be back to continue the series! I chose the awesome Blood Ravens, which always stand out to me because we saw them in Dawn of War all those years ago. That one Space Marine, fighting against a tirade of Orks, determined to keep his chapter banner aloft. Although there isn't much lore behind, it is growing, and they're developing beyond 'just a videogame chapter.' Let me know what you think of this style of video, and what Space Marine chapters you'd like to see in future videos!
Basing scheme:
AK Terrain Texture paste in Firelands-perfect dupe for Martian Ironcrust but a lot cheaper!
Allow each stage to fully dry in between!
Gryph-Hound Orange (contrast)

Outside the Citadel range I think that Pro Acryl Burnt Red is the perfect Blood Raven color

I've found that Vallejo Game Color Gory Red works well

@@derguator3732To my eye, Scarlet Red has a more blue/purple tint. Gory Red seems to be a more neutral dark-ish red.
If I were to go hard for a brown-red, I might suggest either Vallejo Hull Red or Reaper Bloodstain Red. Both are very dark brown-reds. I'm using them as shade colors for zenithal painting on my Blood Ravens.

Great tutorial.
Regarding their canon status, they were in the 4th edition codex that came out a few weeks after the release of Dawn of War and had their own Index Astartes article in White Dwarf a few months after that.

Nice one as usual. If anyone is interested C.S. Goto wrote four novels ( 2004, 2005, 2006) on the Blood Ravens which are worth reading. I never played the game so I don't know how they factor in with it.
The books were pretty spot on with the games lore, it was great seeing the chapter fleshed out more.
@@Mr.Glitchi found the books decent butnwith a deeper understanding of the lore you will learn that there are quite a few eh f*ck ups. XD but for a newcomer its enjoyable.

Hell yes, always a delight to see people painting my boys.
On the paint: I find that khorne red gets you that mid tone that you want. Which is good because it airbrushes super well. Also the colored kneepad is how this chapter displays company markings. Some blood ravens also have cream paint on the top of their backpacks (you can see this in promo art for dawn of war 2)
I was sad to see that you were using ushabti bone to get that cream I love so much. Its so dang difficult to layer it up and I still struggle to get the bone pauldrons I like after a year of trying so many options.
On transfers: Forgotten Chapters and Aquilla Relics got you covered.
On lore: there are also references in Dark Crusade to the Blood Ravens being related to the Word Bearers in some capacity.
Was gonna mention the Word Bearers link. Some say it might be some Chaos (GW) mind tricks while other point out that it is worth considering. The Word Bearer did call them brothers after all and not cousins, like a band of Iron Warriors called the Fist Exemplar when speaking to them in the War of the Beast series. In most books it seems that cousins is what marines from different primarchs call each other when just chatting, brothers seem to only be for those of the same primarch.

Absolutely excited to see more especially if you’re able to do chapters like this that are successors not just the main ex legions. Can I request an Angels of Redemption video, it’s my army and the speed/contrast paints make painting the armour halves actually bearable! 😂 Plus it’s one of the few interesting Dark Angels schemes.

Wasn't expecting a Blood Ravens video lol, personally subscribe to the theory that they're actually Word Bearers due to lack of flesh change, planet names of Aurelia and Cyrene etc.
Particular request for an Ash Wastes scheme.

Nice paint job. I like painting up obscure space marine chapters. I've done a squad of Atlantian Spears and I'm currently working on some Dark Crusaders. Would like to see how you'd tackle those paint schemes

Always personally used the paint Word Bearers Red for my Blood Ravens, tried desperately to find a paint I didn't have to mix so I would always have the same shade across all my minis. This mix looks great though!

There was also this one time where Captain Atanaxis basically told five Custodes who came from a Custodes ship sent to deliver them the galactic news and primaris geneseed that the Custodes were a long way from home, outnumbered five ships to one, and if they didn't stop disrespecting the Blood Ravens then no one would ever know what happened to them. The Custodes left in a hurry after that.
Regarding my own Blood Ravens: I start from a very dark red and a brown wash and then a layer of mepthiston red as the mid one, maybe another layer or two if I wanna boost it a bit. Then I got for a cold red highlight on various edges.
No I wouldn’t boost it any further. I like the tone of got and I feel it works.
It'd be cool to see you paint up a scythe of the emperor marine, you mentioned Cawl and his book the great works has a cool image of Cawl and a scythe marine together.

I just finished painting a Royal Knight for my friends Kings of War army in red and cream. It's just a lovely combination.

Im doing heresy marines but im doing my scheme. Bone,black, green and alpha legion decals as thats the legion tactics ill use. Like the vid Andy, the lore drop was nice

I painted my blood ravens extremly simple: abaddon black spray paint. Then another coat with mephiston red spray (pure mephiston red is to bright).
After that i painted the shoulders with rakarth flesh, shaded with agrax eartshade.
I toy with the idea to give them a was with a reddish shade and drybrush it with evil suns red.

Love the Blood Ravens but I've never been able to get them right but maybe now is the time. If you're taking suggestions then Celestial Lions painting and lore video would be great.

May I suggest the Yellow Jackets next. One of the oldest chapters in real world time. Lore is a bit light but very interesting.

If you can have acces to Blood Raven omnibus from the Black Library (or second hand as it tends to be quite old now) I strongly recommand it.
I totally love the game and the Blood Raven and the book give you more indepth knowledge (to guard well ^^).
And as for the less known chapter I would like to see painted; Mantis Warrior (i love the trilogy explaining how they get back their right to recruit again) and the Scythe of the Emperor (created way back in Advanced Space Crusade *scream as i realised how old it was now* )

I’ve done space wolves in the past!
I have viewed blood angels be painted by brown base coat and then red dots until complete leaving the brown in the recess. they didn't use brush strokes just dots. my request would be eldar for dawn of war how you would paint one up. there's something like 15 different characters, so I'm not picky. pick one you like to do. Personally I'm using a wyche head on my farseer and possibly giving her blonde hair. i saw a siege studios video like I'm trying to replicate.

they literally released 3 codexes for orks, custodes and tau. and you didnt make a video for a single one of them. so there has been releases ^^
I try nti to count the codex and just a character thing to much. I also always have videos for all those factions on my channel. Not much of law I can do with a big golden dude.
