    Something important to remember is that if your hair is chronically dehydrated (coated in oils constantly) this method will take some time to work. What happens is you’re removing the big oily band aid revealing the crisp underneath. It will be frizzy and dry until your hair can begin to absorb moisture (water) again. Personally I saw immense improvement in my hair after a few months into the detox. It didn’t take those months to get improvement (my improvement was within the 30 days) but it only kept improving. I use products on occasion with oils in the 4th or 5th ingredient and have used oils as an emergency band aid when I overwashed my hair. What’s important is washing frequently (at LEAST once a week) to avoid the matting and tangles, using a gentle detangling brush (like Felicia leatherwood) if needed, and to find what products work for you. As long as it’s not stuffed with oils and butters imho it’s fine to use. I use the doux, UFD, kinky curly, pacifica, not your mothers, and mielle organics mainly.

  • @JennJackson
    @JennJackson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    UFD is definitely sticky, especially if one doesn’t use enough water. I had the same experience as you when I washed my hair after the wash and go and my hair felt squeaky clean (even before shampoo - It happened after week 4 though for me).
    This method is so interesting and difficult to maneuver, especially since we are so used to having a coating on our hair.
    I haven’t tried a twistout but I did a flat twist out with just foam/mousse and it felt strange applying the products but the next day? I hair felt so light and fluffy.

      I have found adding lots of water help. I use a fine mist water bottle when styling on soaking wet hair. By the time I am done the bottle is empty. I use very warm water. I actually have no stickiness at all. The kinky curly curling custard actually gives me stickiness but I ave not used it in ages also I seem to go through it faster. I have jars in my stash so I might try it one more time

      Heyyy Jenn,
      Yer I felt my squeaky clean hair after just getting it wet today. It was quite shocking, but I remembered what u said. And hopefully I will get to try the UFD+ICH combo

    • @terrellfstephens
      @terrellfstephens 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tmcurly 🤔 Here’s a technique I tried that may help you use less water (I also live in a super-humid climate, so this may not work where you live): after rinsing your conditioner, gently squeeze excess water from the hair. Apply and distribute UFD throughout whole head, massage and saturate, THEN mist with water, then massage and smooth until you feel the product-water is evenly distributed. You can either add your topper(s) from there, and then define, or just define with the UFD. Doing it this way has helped me get my ratios right, ensure that I don’t use too much product, and helps me control frizz a little better.
      I hope this helps!

    I still feel like this is a process that does not work for everyone, even if you're doing it the right way. My hair loves deep conditioning w/ heat, hates wash n gos (gels are a no-go), and is very prone to tangling (I need more than just one step for detangling lol). I'm low porosity and I had to go completely protein-free due to protein overload. I just feel like this would be my hair's worst nightmare, but I am thankful for the information. Maybe one day when I'm where I want to be in terms of my hair journey, I will come back and try this out XD

    Jenn Jackson described a similar experience washing her hair. You’re both just not used to feeling your clean hair, I think. When, you’re using water soluble products, they do rinse right off, which is part of the beauty of it all. You’ll get used to it if you continue.
    I’m so glad you joined See Some Curls! I know I left that comment before. Aeleise did a beautiful twist out this week and I think the video for it will be added to the library soon. Maybe you’ll get some tips. I don’t have the density or strand size for a twist out, even when my hair gets longer, so I don’t have any tips. I would never go to bed with wet hair though. I don’t think that’s good for your scalp or hair. I know you had extenuating circumstances. I don’t like sitting under the dryer myself. It’s the means to an end. It gets done what I need it to do and gives me good results.
    You are close to several curl artists being in L A, unlike most of us. I’m not sure how many are taking new clients. That might be something you could explore down the road.
    I hope you feel better soon!

    Before this became a “thing” I had already discovered that a light leave in and botanical gel were the best things for my hair to thrive. However, I do find that I have to rewash every 3-4 days. Not because of lack of moisture, but to reduce the SSK’s! When I do that consistently I don’t get many at all! In fact very little tangles at all. As long as I haven’t been playing in it because sometimes I’m my own worst enemy. Anyway, I’m enjoying your journey and have found for myself that my DC sessions can have oils and butters but my styling needs lighter products! My hair looks better and my scalp breathes. All of our journeys are different and no one system is superior, just discover what works for your hair! Looking forward to week 3🤩

    I feel like I actually rely on the buildup of oil or butters on my hair to do the initial steps under the water when washing my hair. It helps me detangle before shampooing. They kind of emulsify under water and then I can shampoo once, then again to get it clean.

    I really appreciate the editing here popping it to shows where you went wrong/could have done things differently/more efficiently. It's helpful for people who immediately discard a product or tool when they maybe were not using a product properly/the right product for the need or style.
    Advice:
    I didn't hear you mention it but are you using a diffuser or hooded dryer at all? Esp with the use of mousse (and esp with a twist out style) the product is *heat activated* and works best when dried under heat to get a good set. Some stylists are stressing that. And the detangling combs are also stressed...for speed but also to ensure roots are not matted and all shed hairs are gone. shed hair=fairy knots. Finger detangling actually can set us back trying to style with shed hairs staying in the mix.
    also my detangling (once I wash within 10 days or less) is pretty easy when I
    1. Do my second shampoo (at least) with a moisturizing shampoo... I usually do some finger detangling then.
    2. Leave the conditioner on my hair for at least half of the recommended time before I start to detangle and make sure to mix water in to help get that hydration into the strands before the cuticle seals down. Then I rake the conditioner thru with fingers (usually very easy...you can go on IG and see how thoroughly the stylists can do it) then I go in with a comb.

    Love that you’re sharing your experience. In my case I learned that around the fifth or sixth day I needed to wash my hair. Otherwise I would have a lot of tangles. For me it’s better to detaingle with a combination of my hair and a brush. The conditioner you used is an ok but it doesn’t have enough slip for me so I’m looking for another one. It’s weird feeling when your hair after shampoo doesn’t seem coated at first. But you get use to it after clarifying because it strip away everything so that’s why I always make sure to use a moisturizing shampoo

    1️⃣ In relationship to the cosmetic chemist… It’s all about the oils being FORMULATED (hydrolyzed) into the products. Oils are great and fine, just not in excess, and there really isn’t a NEED to put RAW oils on our hair or scalp.
    2️⃣ With Uncle Funky’s…WATER. If you don’t use enough water, it will be super-sticky. The hair must be completely saturated with water, and you want to add more water as you add product until you hear that “squish” sound.
    3️⃣ The adjustment process IS weird, and your hair may even change, but once you’re used to it , and your hair is able to uptake water better, the tangled seem to “melt” away. You SHOULD use your detangling tool, though, as it makes things way easier. Remember, the whole point of this is to make the process easier, and faster.
    4️⃣ Did you use a hooded dryer to dry your twist-out? Foams and mousses are heat-activated, so - when doing a twist-out - I’d use heat, as this will set your style so it will last. I’d also leave out the Uncle Funky’s, and just use the mousse, or a light leave-in + mousse, then dry under your dryer!

    Try Uncle Funkys daughter Squeaky shampoo! It's great! Lather twice with it. After the 2nd round your hair will feel nice and soft and your scalp will feel great. Follow it up with the Kinky curly knot today leave it. Run each section of your hair under warm water before applying the leave in to that section then detangle that section and go on to the next. Your hair will feel amazing and be ready for whatever styling you choose. If you're not doing a wash n go, then let it air dry 50 - 75% before styling. I'd also love to see you try the curl definition system for your wash n go. If you do try the system, swap the knot today for the leave in that they sell and follow their instructions for applying the product. You won't regret it. Love this video! I think we could be hair twins. In regards to the little knots at the end, I don't get those with wash-n-gos when I shingle my hair. I like to refer to shingling as all hair having its own place. When I set my hair with gel and shingle, my tight tiny curls keep their distance :) Despite your singing (not too bad), always listen to your gut/hair. Another note, when using a detangling brush of any kind (I love the tangle teaser with the handle), always take your time. Gently stretch the section of hair and let gravity slowly pull the brush down your strands. In other words, don't force it. The stickiness of UFD is probably the agave. These are just tips - not trying to tell yo what to do. I'm just a girl with hair like yours and a lot of experience with my natural hair and l've read a lot about the science of hair. Thanks for the vid. The content for this method is increasing by the day. I am a twist out/flat twist out girl and this has been one of my concerns. I am a newer natural (4C, lo po, medium density, medium strands) and have never done a wash and go. I have no plans to purchase a dryer and my hair tangles very easily which are the main reasons why I am hesitant to try it. Thanks for being transparent.

    A WEEK!! That should be standard time for a successful wash n go to last. When I stretch my wash n go past a week that’s when I experience more tangles. I think the products with oils help prevent this. This challenge…….😬 IDK if this was a You thing especially since you have had great successful wash n gos. Maybe your hair is in a good state that this doesn’t fit. I’m here for the full 30.

    It's perfectly fine to use a detangling brush when you feel it's needed. The bun is always a good choice when things don't go exactly as planned. If you choose to stick with it, this way of hair care does get easier. I also enjoy doing the wash n go because I was never good at twist or braid-outs. I've been doing wash n go's and this method since 2008 before I even knew it was a method. I can tell it's tough on content creators. It's the main reason I never wanted to become one. Who's going to watch someone do the same style each week using the same products over and over? LoL

    I'm glad that you got to the twist out part of the course! yeahhh UFD is def not recommended for twist outs cause itll never dry lol but I think you might have better success with a light leave in and foam or just foam alone. I unintentionally went over a month without my hair grease (literally oils and waxes, not petrolatum based). (It wasn't a deliberate detox, I was just alternating between broke, tired, and the product not being on the shelf when I got to the store.) The amount of knotting and breakage was insane! My twists (my usual go to style) were dry and ragged. The puff I wore after wash day? Dry as the sahara. The only time I didn't have dry hair was when I used more mouse and gel in tandem than I ever have in my life, which just led to flakes and itchy scalp. Detangling has been awful. For me, formulated products with butters and oils function the same as lotion, if that makes sense. It's interesting to see the much more positive results other people have when they do this deliberately.

    It sounds like your hair was just very clean. Nothing wrong with that, Sis. It's just that with a lot of constant product usage, we miss becoming familiar with that natural, clean-hair experience. Mostly, to my slightly damp hair I add just a wee bit of oil-mixture (I experiment by varying the combinations and amounts of oils such as -- coconut oil, Jamaican black castor oil, argan oil, olive oil, even a little petroleum jelly sometimes). But it is nice to rest all that occasionally, and just enjoy my hair being 'squeaky clean' and I don't have to wash my fingers every time I touch my hair. 😊
    So occasionally, I do a basic clean with my on-hand shampoo, followed by a light scalp massage with my fingers only (no bought-devices), then section and twist or plait (braid) my hair while it is still a little damp. This results in clean, soft, shiny hair; and when I untwist or loosen my plaits, the hair simply retains the impression of the twists or the plaits, and from there, it is optional how I style it -- whether pinning up sections of my hair or arranging the sections however I feel. The hair feels lighter, naturally soft, my greys have a brilliant shine, and all without any product-oil/s creeping down my forehead. 🌺

    When I detangle I put the condish all in my hair, add some more water, clip it up into sections, then rewet the section, go right in w my Felicia leatherwood brush ends to root, 2 strand twist it & clip it back up, & repeat for every section. Sorry if that sounds like a lot lmao my hair is not long but it takes less than 10 mins. I used to finger detangle & then use a brush but that actually took longer & I would have more breakage. I don’t like twist outs on me but maybe try putting your leave in on in the shower & then the mousse when it’s damp not soaking? It will take less time to dry but I do think most foams are heat activated so dryer time (or even hot sun time) is necessary to set.

By the 3-4 week, my hair had the "squeaky clean" feel after I shampooed and then after that just wetting my hair before shampoo gives me the squeaky feeling. I thought I was doing something wrong. I only had a moisturizing shampoo so when I did my googles and found that that squeaky feeling was because you have nothing in your hair, I was so confused! My shampoo is supposed to be moisturizing!! So to hear you had the same experience and you also have been following the Black Girl Curls guide, I feel less worried that Im doing something wrong.
